The show was so good at that time...look at all the characters interacting...whomever screwed everything up in the Fall of 85 should have been fired.

Giving Jeff Ryder more of a say in the direction of stories, was a big mistake. If they couldn't find anyone to share the HW duties with Pam Long, they should've let her be solo IMO.

am I the only one liking Anna? She is so likeable compared to Gina.

I actually do like Anna, and I think Molly isn't as bad as she could be. Her character is a bright spot on the canvas too.

Gina, I'm always torn. The actress was strong in her scenes with Cindy, but I don't think she does subtlety very well, especially where her character is spiraling out of control at Peggy's.

Very interesting to see OLTL slip into the 7s especially when AMC and GH are performing in the 9s/10s.

Don't want to offend any fans of OLTL, as it is one of my fav soaps as well, but looking at these ratings you can see how it obtained that title as the redhead step child of ABC.

To clarify what I meant about movement, it is not just about the size of the set but the static placement of the camera.

Look at Shawn's scene with the mayor.  First, when the mayor sits, he pops into the shot, the camera can't pan down to follow him sitting.  Then, (I assume because they don't do takes for coverage), the entire conversation is a back and forth between close up, with no wide shot to establish their place in the room or their reactions to each other while they talk.  So, they wind up looking like puppets because they can only use their upper body and their hands to express themselves.

I'm not asking them to walk and talk like they're in an episode of the West Wing, but it would be nice to see some camera movement within an entire episode.

That being said, I am glad that at least it is brighter in Salem than it used to be.  We still never know what time of day it is, but 2020 looked like every episode took place at dusk.  And the sound mixing is much clearer.

Makes me miss the days of when Ed Scott produced the show. Sigh

  5. I wonder if this is after Marland's departure and the revolving door of writers that followed...

GL slipping. This must be when Douglas Marland was on the way out. He is credited as HW until October 1982.

Nvm, thanks for the info on Doug's departure kalbir.

The Doctors did not introduce one successful new doctor character to infuse new life into the hospital setting. A strong young woman doctor when Althea left was a no brainer. Or a sexy male doctor. One of the Dancys could have been a doctor.

Very true. I've always thought there was a need to add a psychiatrist to the group of Matt/Maggie/Steve/Carolee.

  7. I've always believed end of 2002/start of 2003 was a turning point for the show, and had any other writer followed Taggart/Culliton's plans we would've seen a much more rejuvenated GL in '03 especially regarding the Spaulding's. The Spaulding drama with Alex vs Alan, I can't help but to believe that Taggart/Culliton were planning on bringing back A-M to battle it out for Spaulding (perhaps siding with Alan since Phillip was no longer the favored son). I also recall a brief discussion about Blake wanting to get in the heat of things by wanting to jump back into the corporate world at Spaulding. There was also some of those threads previously set up during the Ex-Wives club such as Alex blackmailing Mindy, that may have been picked up again in the following year.

However Conboy/Weston totally squandered all of that. The show would get another chance when Kreizman/Wheeler first start out, and with the Roger Thorpe death storyline, but again, much of the potential is wasted.

  8. I think Doris Quinlan was the right producer for DOCTORS at the time in 79/80, but Ralph Ellis and Eugenie Hunt were the wrong writers to execute ideas that she clearly wanted to implement into the show. Quinlan was right to have wanted someone a strong writer like Lemay. Such wasted potential, bc the 3's company idea is a interesting idea IMO.
