Watched some of the current show, and Maureen Lipman is the only bright spot. Her scones with her daughter Cassandra were a revelation, and better than any scene this show has aired this year.

Another return

Very interesting read. Fascinating how SFT was tackling issues about the environment and Vietnam.

Distancing Vanessa from the Spaulding atmosphere and business dealings was a big mistake.

The only soap I can see Carlivati on is Sunset Beach.

If only a talented writer could delve deep into why Kyle is like this I'd watch.

The Labines are a popular group on this thread. I would be curious to see what Claire Labine and Paul Avila Mayer could have done with Search for Tomorrow or The Doctors after they departed Ryan's Hope in 1982. Or perhaps instead of creating Ryan's Hope, both Labine and Mayer were brought onto DOCTORS in 1975, which was a pivotal point for the show as the Pollocks had just departed, and it seemed like the show was toying with going to an hour, they just needed a HW with a vision that would get viewers watching right away and someone that the networks would have enough faith in to be allowed time to get the show back on top.
If Claire and Paul's first few years at Ryan's Hope is any clue as to what they would have done for SEARCH, I think their vision would have fit perfectly with the show. Mix of medical, romantic, and political drama seems what Search was about in the early to mid 70s. Claire's tackling of social issues on GH in the 90s, I could see being a vision that could be applied to Search as well, with Jo and Stu running their bed and breakfast with new and intriguing characters of all ages. Labine's ability to infuse light hearted humor also could be applied to SEARCH too.
I've always wondered how Gordon Russell, Sam Hall, and Peggy O'Shea would have done at The Doctors. They also had stories where the backdrop was the hospital and could tackle social issues very well too. I could see a storyline like OLTL's baby switch playing out on DOCTORS. Or a restless doctor's wife resorting to prostitution to fund her lavish lifestyle. Or a character like Marco Dane terrorizing Madison, targeting a young Penny (like he did with Tina) and butting heads with Althea. ABC seemed to have had a monopoly on talented writers in the mid to late 70s, sucks that networks like NBC couldn't or wouldn't take note.0 -
EDGE sure shot up in the ratings during Aug 25-29

I'm loving it. All the buzz and excitement.
I also love the fact that it's bound to thrust the Beale family back to the forefront (rightfully), and hopefully we will get the return of Cindy Jr and Peter (recast PLEASE).

Now EDGE and DOCTORS flip flop on who will be the least watched soap.

The drop was well deserved, unfortunately. Just a horrible time for the show.
It was the price of shows like AW, SB, and GL had to pay for Paul Rauch's ego.

SEARCH doesn't appear to be doing that bad at the start of '79.

This was awhile back, but someone had posted a old SOD blurb from 1980 how the soaps were going on location, Dominican Republic and St. Croix. Seemingly it paid off, if only temporary (for AW).

March 1980 AW was seemingly doing pretty good. I'm surprised.

^This.
But the right will continue to move those goal posts in order to maintain chaos and avoid accountability.

I haven't watched the show in awhile, but this storyline is seemingly moving at warped speed.
Leave it to Josh to make a kidnapping boring.

To be fair, I think things like "Body and Soul" would've worked if the rest of the show was intriguing as it would've probably felt like a welcome interlude to what else was going on; in-jokes can work (see the Twin Peaks characters watching a soap opera), but only if everything else is juicy and good, otherwise it just comes off as a distraction to hide the faulty writing overall.
Right. There needs to be a balance.

The right is imploding on these Sunday morning tv shows and I love it …

I think we're nearer the tipping point where SCOTUS will have to finally be overhauled, tbh. It will take time but it's rattled the general public.
Honestly if Biden doesn't do this before 2024, I can definitely see him doing this during a second term.

Whew, the retirement of Lorraine Broderick, Richard and Carolyn Culliton....I hope this new crop of writers (Emily, Harry) can learn a little from them and what they've done for the genre.

I still think if the show wants a successful Tripp pairing, have a young vixen set her sights on him and actually win him. Thought this might happen with Claire, but to no avail. Having him fall for these Mary Sue type characters he's bound to lose out esp. under Ron's pen.

I must confess, bringing on Eli and Lani to investigate Abe's disappearance, seems like an arc that would have played out on Beyond Salem. Grateful that these two are back, albeit temporarily.
