EastEnders: Discussion Thread
She backtracked on that later (which doesn't surprise me to be honest - I'm sure she got a call or something), but I'm still glad she said it. Even if it all turns out to be a con, it's still more tedious fanboy grandstanding that wasn't needed, and it makes Sharon look even more like an idiot.

Yes. That would have been a good story when Kim and Bob were split up via the Susan affair.

This campaign continues to be a shitstorm for Jeb, with the "Bush legacy" crushing him in myriad ways, now even by his own father. You can't make it up. http://www.politico.com/story/2015/11/jeb-bush-defends-george-w-bush-215564 And a big ha-ha to media darling Chris Christie. Fuckabee only cares about shilling anyway, so I guess he will barely notice he's now even more irrelevant. http://www.politico.com/story/2015/11/chris-christie-debates-2016-215554

I think he would have given Susan and Emily some story when they returned to Oakdale. He could have just popped in and out, the way Russ Matthews did on AW before the show started pretending Russ never existed.

They should have just had Dan leave town with Susan. I almost mentioned Colenback but I wasn't sure how popular he actually was.

German soaps: GZSZ, UU & AWZ
Thanks. That's interesting. I wish more soaps had stories about bakeries. Corrie had one for maybe a year, as a new female character worked there (her father ran it), but it was mostly about her father being a sexual harasser and pig.

Thanks. A soap story on refugees would be interesting, although I guess this is not going to be an actual story. Rare to see soap stories about bakeries.

Any Capitol Fans Here?
Carol was phased out over a period of several years, last appearing sometime in 1993 or 1994. It's a shame as Christopher Templeton was a good actress.

Something Sallows (Linday Frost wasn't available) and then Jordan Baker. I don't really remember the last one. I thought making Betsy a deadbeat mother, and everything they did with Dani over the years (especially the shameful, sick return in 2009) was a terrible idea.

Betsy moved to Wisconsin or somewhere with Seth, then Seth came back a year or two later. http://soapcentral.com/atwt/whoswho/betsy.php This gets some stuff wrong, as these profiles often do (she never "tried romance" with Tad Channing, who was dead by the time Steve left town).

More clickbait from some of the hackier members of The Atlantic. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/11/liberals-are-losing-the-culture-war/414175/ Something I've noticed for years is how happy some of the "liberal media" get when the far right wins at the ballot box, especially on social issues. They get to resurrect some of their biggest old lines about how liberals are out of control and "real" "mainstream" America is speaking out. You can feel the smugness and glee throughout. I will never forget how much some of the press basked in this after the hate campaigns Karl Rove ran in 2004, how they basked in W and his "mandate." It's the same reason they get tingly over Marco Rubio. He's the closest to what they loved about W - pushing hard right policies while being sold as everyman and a cool guy (he loves Tupac!!!). Won't be long before we get even further back into the "throw [minorities/gays/women] under the bus" type comments I remember so vividly from 2004 and 2005.

I complain so much about The Fix that I should praise them over finally having one decent writer who doesn't sound like she has the Beltway firmly placed between her teeth. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2015/11/04/this-colo-school-board-member-wanted-a-more-positive-curriculum-parents-just-wanted-her-out/

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
She was…her marriage to Steve was the second highest rated wedding only behind Luke and Laura. Yeah but many of you longterm ATWT are debunking that on this thread. I thought the whole Stewart family was beloved as they were second to the Hughes but again this thread and recent posts say otherwise. There's no doubting that Meg Ryan was very popular as Betsy. Not immediately (she said that at a fan event the guy who played Steve asked everyone to raise their hands if she was their favorite Betsy, and pretty much no one did, as Suzanne Davidson's Betsy had been very popular with fans), but in time. Even now I've seen people talking about how they loved her. I wasn't watching at the time so my experience is mostly just clips and episodes. As for the Stewarts, I think they were important to viewers, but were marred by poor writing, lack of depth, and many, many recasts. The only Stewart kids who seemed to have something of a following were the Dans (mainly John Reilly), Ryan's Betsy (I preferred Lindsay Frost but I get the feeling many viewers always preferred Ryan) and Jacqueline Schultz's Dee (who was, IMO, very poorly written - Schultz eventually quit for that reason). And then I guess Emily, to a point.

Nothing wrong with those fantasies - frankly most of the guys on the show have more chemistry with each other than they do with the ladies.

I don't care for Julie Ridley as Annie - she seems very old and very milquetoast. Randall Edwards played her briefly when Ridley left. I wish that had lasted.

This was the only time for most of his run (minus the '60s) that he had much to do. I will admit he gets a bit tiresome at times, but his daughters were so boring and stupid I can see why he was frustrated.

Looks like another offyear bloodbath for Democrats. The far right lunatic running for governor in Kentucky, disliked by much of the party apparatus (he ran against Mitch McConnell in the GOP primary last year), won, likely due to hatred of Obama and the whole Kim Davis fiasco (cue "the gay marriage fight isn't over" media headlines, when the dumbass worthless piece of [!@#$%^&*] bigoted media are the only ones who ever said it was over IN THE FIRST PLACE). Downballot Democrats are also losing or close to losing. A human rights ordinance in Houston failed after a "men will use women's bathrooms!!!" campaign. And Republicans kept the state senate in Virginia. I hope Kentucky residents on Kynect (their healthcare system) will be able to survive without it.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
Taglines - I like Cynthia's, and Kim's works because of how she delivers it. The rest - eh. Kandi's was good but awkwardly worded. Phaedra's is the worst.

Coronation Street: Discussion Thread
RIP Stephen Hancock - Ernest's shock death hit people hard in an era when something like that actually still was a shock. Stephen seemed to be a man of real principle, unlike a number of current Corrie stars. Ernest could be annoying and self-righteous at times but he, along with Emily, represented heart and community even with strong individual quirks - everything I miss in today's soaps. http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2015/nov/03/stephen-hancock

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
I know how much you always enjoyed this show, DF, so this truly must have been a bad season. The Real Housewives shows have had a long run by reality show standards but I think the toxicity has shaved probably 5 or so years off their lifespan.

EastEnders: Discussion Thread
Sarah Phelps, who wrote some of EE’s best material in the Chrissie Watts era and wrote a few Sharon-centric episodes this year, is NOT happy with this Gavin “hello Princess” retconning BS. Read the tweets before they disappear. https://twitter.com/PhelpsieSarah/status/661279715181883392 I don’t even care if this is all a ruse by Gavin, I’m glad she’s speaking up. I’m tired of DTC clumsily rewriting years of established history for his endless wank jobs.

Star Trek returns with streaming series
A lot of the people involved in it ran like hell after the first season, which has always confused me. Maybe it was a FOX thing. I should disclaim that I do know a lot of fans are fine with this era of the show, some of whom, like my father, are far bigger Trek fans than I am. I just don't really like Abrams' work. I do hope the show does well, streaming or whatever it may be.
