As The World Turns Discussion Thread
VHSGoodiesWA, who provides a lot of good soap stuff very generously (let's not talk about some uploaders) has put up a December 1988 episode I hadn't seen around before.

I think she was likely brought in because the cast was bloated and there were a lot of stories. Personally I preferred that and I think the material of 1987 and some of 1988 is much richer than anything after, but I can understand why they did it, I guess. Erica was islanded, yes. I think she was mostly in New York for a year or more at one point.

Thanks. Great find. I wonder if that's still around.

It was. I really liked her returns as Natalie. Still never sure about the Janet returns... I remember a lot of talk from fans about how she never did appear with James Kiberd in any of them. I think she may have once but if so not for long. You could see them trying for genuine diversity rather than tokenism. It's a shame that with the general decline of ratings in the mid-90s AMC was another soap that decided to retreat and regress.

I do agree with those who say we failed our basic responsibility in not letting in more Syrian refugees. Not only did we refuse to let many in, we made it clear that we saw them as scum and dangerous criminals, stigmatizing those few who were let in. And I imagine the number will trickle even further now - for any refugee that doesn't have a pretty, white face. And even many of those if they don't have enough cash. Countries like Germany clearly had no idea what they were doing with refugees, but others like Canada got the balance right. As for being involved in Syria, Democrats and Republicans alike have proven in the last 15 years they have no idea what they are doing in these countries. "Regime change" and "liberation" and other fancy words that make old warmongers feel warm and cozy and do little for the people actually being oppressed. They are often just oppressed by someone new and we are nowhere around to help. I saw a bit of Samantha Power shaming Russia and Assad for Aleppo, and that Russian UN guy essentially said she had no room to speak because of our track record. And sadly, he was right. I think much of the right wing claims of America's impotence to the world were macho hysteria from people stuck in the '50s, but they aren't always wrong. For much of the last 8 years in foreign policy, we tried to be everything while also trying to be nothing. We failed on both counts.

Sarah was let go in summer or fall 1980 wasn't she? I think that recast arrived in January 1981 or late 1980. I'm confused about the June thing as I believe Sarah was still there at that point.

I guess there was Nathan. I do wonder if Amy could have become popular if she'd stayed. Definitely. I keep hoping more early '80s or more 1985 or way back ('70s back) will pop up but I can't have everything. Just send your e-mail address and I'll send whenever you wish. I also got a 1998 episode and a 12/14/90 B&B if anyone needs those.

Generally, yes. I think 1981 was a well-rated year for RH for that reason.

Thank you! Even after all these years Siobhan's wailing in this period still tugs at my heartstrings...I had that in my head for eons, "...because YOU were on MY side!!!" I love that scene. Thank you. Nicolette Goulet's odd staccato speech patterns always irritated me but she did a nice job in her final weeks as Mary.

The date on this is wrong (it's from June 1 1989), but this has some of my favorite Cass/Kathleen scenes, from when she was still "dead" and he hallucinated seeing her after he learned Nicole killed Jason and let Felicia stay in prison. Frankie and Cass for me just never had this chemistry, no matter how much the show forced it.

The main thing I remember about Tom's death (besides it being a bit unintentionally amusing) was when they tried to imply it was Delia's fault. I had no time for that. It was one of many writing choices that made me loathe Roger. Do you have the episode where Siobhan and Jack argue after the engagement party and Mary realizes something isn't right? I haven't been able to find that one and I really want to see it again.

This type of stuff is why I will continue boycotting North Carolina for a long time to come. It's a banana republic. http://www.politico.com/story/2016/12/pat-mcrory-law-restrict-roy-cooper-power-232758

In the long run what she did to Vanessa was important as nothing of the Vanessa of her first few years was sustainable. I do think that Vanessa's second run was much much stronger - I don't know if it's because, like Maureen Garrett, Maeve had grown as an actress and was more mature and complex, or if it was just a more solid characterization. What I've seen of Vanessa's first run often seems somewhat formless, or empty, even when they gave her the Dinah story.

I think some clips were taken down by them and the rest went as a precaution by the uploader as they got several strikes. It's absurd to me as they were just a handful of clips. I don't know if someone thinks this is a way to get viewers to watch. The odd thing is that I've seen channels that have new clips and those are untouched.

I think she was a bit "Oh Nola!" with Marland, a bit silly, and I had a hard time imagining her as a mother of 5-6 kids. I also thought the Tony/Nola relationship was tough to watch. I don't know who improved it, it may have already improved by the time Long came. I think the guy who played Tony quit. I'm not sure about Harley Jane Kozak. Probably not. I think Bea was let go after Long left.

Coster or John Considine said in later interviews they were both fired because they were big practical jokers and had a lot of fun on set.

When saynotoursoap used to post here he'd say that she actually made the Reardons a believable family and made Bea a believable mother figure. I haven't seen enough to say, but I do think Tony was more tolerable under Long. It often seems to me in the clips of Quint and Nola up to that point (Long) Nola is clustered with two family units (Quint's and the Reardons); Long seemed to sort of focus more on the Reardon side and move Vanessa elsewhere, and shrink the Quint group (although I think some of that group, like Nola's friend, were already gone). I wish I could see more of Smith's writing as I've mostly just heard about it. I know a while after they had random stories like Tony and a ballerina, but I think that was Browne.

That was one of the things that made ATWT feel special. I know for budget reasons it couldn't continue, but the jump to the hollowed out ATWT of 1996 was disastrous.
