As The World Turns Discussion Thread
To me Emily was an anti-heroine, not an ingenue. And I think Emily being the only Stewart with anything to do was a big mistake in the long-term. I think they could have done a lot with Betsy even without Steve - they could have brought in more of the Stewart girls, they could have explored her relationship with Craig more, they could have had her get more involved in Kim's life and maybe helped out Andy and he could have become fixated on her. They just didn't bother, I guess because they had so many other women to write for.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I didn't think they destroyed Betsy in any of her material after Steve left. I will admit that I wasn't watching then so maybe I would have felt differently, but I never liked the Betsy/Steve relationship and I thought Lindsay Frost was much better on her own, even if they obviously had no real story plans for Betsy until Lindsay left the role.

Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I agree, I liked Kathy (and I think Alice could be a good addition now - as could Kathy for the Sugdens, Marlon, etc.) I do think the character lost something when she became the generic heroine in peril in the late '90s.

20 years of the Battersbys, without whom we would have never had so many "families from hell" on soaps. Sad to think of what Toyah and Leanne have become.

I think this is something they'd be ramping up even if Hillary was in the White House. Unfortunately both parties have seemed to have no idea how to respond as they grow more and more dangerous. And of course Trump doesn't even have most of his positions filled at the State Department, which Tillerson was apparently berating aides about recently. It shouldn't surprise me just how little the GOP cares but somehow it still does. I guess they figure it's just Alaska. Or it's just California.

A look at the response waiting for the man who found out that the stupid Trump vs CNN video was by an anti-Semite. http://www.thewrap.com/reporter-threatened-after-revealing-who-created-trumps-cnn-wwe-video/ A long piece on the ugly struggles in Texas and their mirror to the nation (although it sounds like Republicans there are much more divided than they are in Congress). http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/07/10/americas-future-is-texas

Coronation Street: Discussion Thread
Her relationship with Faye made my skin crawl, especially when she went to her school to berate her and verbally abuse her in front of her friends.

Thanks. The uploader told me too. They should have had him come back instead of the other recast a few years later. Watching the full clip, Tori/Kristen Meadows is a lot better in the last segments where she nearly tells Cruz the truth and then holds Samantha. I wish she had been like that more often.

Oh good another temp recast. I always enjoy those. He has an...interesting interpretation. Who is the actor? He could have fit in on Sledge Hammer. He also has the "dirty hot" vibe... This must have been strike material. I swear any time I see a clip from 86-88 there is Tori with that awful quavering voice. So many wonderful characters had no chance on SB and she just dragged on and on and on.

Is it me or does Kimberly McArthur (who is near the last few minutes of this clip) look a lot like Brad's psycho wife on Y&R? I wonder if they might have been better off replacing Robin Wright with her...- The Politics Thread
“It is a sad day when the President of the United States encourages violence against reporters,” a CNN spokeswoman said in a statement. “Instead of preparing for his overseas trip, his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, dealing with North Korea and working on his health care bill, he is instead involved in juvenile behavior far below the dignity of his office. We will keep doing our jobs. He should start doing his.” This po-faced response actually made me LOL Jeff Zucker took CNN far into the gutter, giddily taking part in everything Trump dished out. It's way too late to try to get on a high horse now. Their jobs are to see how fast they can fill up the clown car. They aren't Cronkite. They are barely Billy Bush.- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I would have Sam buy Butler's Farm from Moira. I'd have him with a black wife and they'd have a few kids, to add to the show's diversity and establish the Sugden extended family for a new era. I'd also bring in a long lost son of Jack's. Given how reality doesn't matter in Emmerdale now I'd be tempted to bring Joe back from the dead if Frazer's health is up to it. Anyway, here's Arthur Pentelow's last appearance as Henry. Henry was such a special character (I loved his relationship with Annie - to me they were soulmates) - I'm sorry he seems to be so forgotten today, as is everyone of that era, really.- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
The main issues I've had with Charity since her return have been when Chas was so awful to her and when she was desperate for Cain, although the latter started when she was in prison (and that was also when they had the stupid story where she had a baby with Ross). The stuff with Frank is disappointing because it was all rushed and then dropped for months. It's going to pick up again soon, but dropping it for a long as they did means it's going to be difficult to care. The pacing is one of the biggest issues I have with the show (along with poorly explained motivations and characters changing personality - eg, Priya/Pete, anything with Rebecca). I actually like the Belle and Charity relationship, but I would like to see more for her. I wish they'd have Chas sell up and someone else run it with Charity. I've never liked Chas as owner.- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I think Charity still works well enough - they just overdid it with that Declan mess and then having her obsessed with Cain. The main Dingles I would probably write out unless things improve for them are Chas and Aaron. I'd also write out Zak, but the show has so few longstanding cast members...- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I saw someone saying they wanted the entire family (bar I think Charity) written out, and I thought to myself you'd probably be happy to know them. I'm putting up the next episode after this one and then later am going to put up a few 1991 episodes someone asked for. I just wish I had more '80s stuff...- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I don't know if you'd want to see it but I put up another 1995 episode. The one right after they found out Joe died (I also put the one where they found out).- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I agree. I think she wanted to leave, but I will miss her. Emma could have run for years. Unlike some characters who just seem to take up space.- The Politics Thread
How awful. I hadn't heard about that. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/01/us/politics/trump-epa-chief-pruitt-regulations-climate-change.html No one cares if it doesn't affect them. They will pretend they care, to feel good about themselves, but that only lasts so long. Look at Flint, which only gets in the news now because Steve Harvey decided to make an ugly joke. People who have a voice don't care about anything anymore aside from bigots who want to make life hell for everyone who doesn't look and act like them and big business who want to make sure they keep rolling in dough. There are people out there who are fighting, but they have no power. And the average person at home just isn't bothered. That's why the Russia stuff has become a burden, because it's catnip for a media that has nothing but contempt and disdain for America as it is. They now have even less reason to report on what's happening to us, or to the world, because they can pretend they're big brave types back in the Cold War days. It's sexy for them. It's fun. They can talk about Russia, and they can whine because Trump sees them as the worthless, sycophantic failures they are, and their job is done. They were more upset over their beloved Mika because she is like them - a self-important, right wing sycophant and useless waste of airtime. So they can tut-tut over that, while the actual policies being made by this administration around the country and the world that hurt women far more than a millionairess being called out for a bad facelift will continue to be ignored. And these hacks will continue to pat themselves on the back for being a "voice for honesty" or "truth" and for having higher ratings and circulation numbers. The media doesn't need us. They need Trump. And deep down they probably still love him, because he makes them feel relevant, even though they aren't and never really will be again.- The Politics Thread
He should save his money. I don't know what all they own but Time itself hasn't been of much worth in ages. I wrote it off when they had a very dangerous article about gay teenagers that was wrapped in "progress" while underneath it was clearly propaganda. The man who wrote it went on to become a big ex-gay activist.- The Tennis Thread
