"The Conners" Discussion Thread
I had to laugh when I saw people claiming ABC was doing this solely to spite Roseanne Barr and to prove a point. Do they think ABC would keep a show on the air just out of spite? Sadly a lot of idiots do believe these types of things.

I think Johnson is pretty much done. Gove is more of a question - he's glomming onto May now which might help him. There are people objectively worse than May, but I think she has enabled them to get them this far, so it's a very warped chicken and egg syndrome.

The threshold was much tougher for Thatcher than for May, as they changed the rules after Thatcher's time as PM. Apparently May implied that she would not run for another term as PM, so that may have made some in her party who are sick of her decide to support her. Given how craven she is I wonder if she will keep her word. The media is in the tank for the Tories and have repeatedly tried to spin her never-ending can-kicking and dithering as signs of being a strong woman.

EastEnders: Discussion Thread
I was thrilled, and shocked! I have had no real use for the show the last few years but I'm glad they are reconnecting to their history, their real history, after bastardizing it so badly with things like the Gavin fiasco. Mary and Lofty were two of my favorite characters of their era and it will be great to see them back. It also mean that the Michelle recast can be even more consigned to the bin.

Stevie being on Port Charles would have made more sense than most of their material.

Any time I see that last clip I think of Big Business. City Sadie would fit right in with the Trumps...(aside from actually having money, that is).

Cohen is right about Daily Caller. I get that a lot as well.

The problem with Trump saying he wants a shutdown being a 'gift' for Democrats, as some are saying, is that to Trump's supporters, it is a good thing. The GOP will also see it as a good thing, as they can blame Democrats. And many of those who voted for Democrats this November will likely say that nothing has changed and Democrats taking power hasn't improved Washington, or they are being too stubborn, etc. With that said, Pelosi and Schumer have no choice but to go to a shutdown rather than accept his crap, or continue what Schumer was doing where he was trying to say that a border wall is fine just with less money attached. Unfortunately I think Democrats are going to pay the price for this shutdown, but then, some things never change.

Pence just terrifies me on so many levels. The Pelosi-hating media is going to make a meal of this stuff for ages. I imagine Ed Rendell is on the phone somewhere right now.

To be honest I have a feeling it's higher than that and they just aren't saying. He appeals to the worst in many.

I get what people are saying about San Cristobel, but I didn't mind the story in the first year or two, when the focus was on Cassie and Richard falling in love contrasting with Reva's jealousy, Cassie's money woes, etc. It was after she and Richard married that the setting should have gone for good, I think. After that it just became more and more obvious there was no story left to tell, and what we did get was just variations on crap. By the time the boring fisherman turned out to be the real king I think I'd stopped watching. (then of course he was later killed off after about 3 seconds of screentime when they decided to make his son a psycho)

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/12/10/supreme-court-planned-parenthood-defunding-case-845056 Chief Justice John Roberts and the newest justice, Brett Kavanaugh, joined the court's four liberal jurists in turning away a pair of petitions from Kansas and Louisiana seeking the ban on abortion providers. To all those who drove many believers away for good and did horrific damage to their cause in the long-term for the sake of short-term wins they didn't even get, all I can say is:

I think it will just become a figurehead role or a role for someone he wants to humiliate. I wonder if Ayers cutting and running that way means Pence may start getting further phased out.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
What was it they burned through most, I wonder? Maybe the stuff with the psycho nanny? Marland does spend a lot of late 1988/early 1989 phasing out material that was set up while he was on strike (like Beau and Pam). It takes a while for the show to regroup. I think it does in 1991, but the show really does become very, very bleak by 1992. I'll always wonder what might have been if he'd stayed through 93-94, which were big transition years gone wrong yet also with glimmers of potential.

The biggest problem isn't so much being depressing as how hollow it is. Meaningless and damaging.
