All too typical. I still wonder if she will even bother to run again. I see the dead end leftists and grifters like Matt Taibbi are feverishly trying to make this about the evils of the Espionage Act and comparing him to their heroes Assange and Snowden. Never mind that Trump pointedly chose not to pardon either of those men, in spite of the usual suspects literally begging him to do so. Nothing Trump does will shake his support. There is no floor. It's not surprising, but it's why there is so little hope left.

An August 1987 Evening Magazine episode. At around 34 minutes there's a segment on the upcoming season of Falcon Crest. They interview various cast, including the expected tiptoeing around Jane Wyman's diva ways as well as a great deal of talk about sexing the show up and on relying so heavily on guest stars - essentially saying that viewers watch to see old faces popping in rather than the rest. Lorenzo Lamas even sings The Love Boat theme just to make the point clear. They also have nurses asking her fan questions, and show her briefly watching an episode of the show from home with a reporter. What a surprise that smarmy, bro-to-the-end Chris Hayes, who sadly had to miss his former pal Tara Reade's big award for Russia loving, yukking it up with some of the dumbest people in existence like Ben Dreyfuss. Still stuck in 2016 when he claimed Hillary was to the right of Trump, still showing us how cool and funny they are as they hee hee and haw haw over Trump.

Marlena de la Croix once mentioned a Robin Strasser quote about "the arena" (scenes Robin would share with Erika Slezak). I keep thinking about that with Anne on AW because she truly commanded the screen in a way that challenged her co-stars. The best were those who sparked with her - those who did not would be left in the dust. I remember so many wonderful moments with Paul Michael Valley, Anna Stuart, Tom Eplin, and of course opposite herself, a feat only the late, great David Canary managed as well as Anne. I remember fleeting relationships that were so unique for soaps, like her friends with benefits bond with Evan, enlivened by the sparks and easy bond between Anne and Charles Grant. Most of all I remember how every episode with Anne had a spark, how every scene with Anne crackled with life and vitality. She was everything that soaps should have been and everything many in and out of the industry who shamed it never accepted that it should be. I don't mean to just focus on a role she left in 1991, it's just hard to think about the abuse she suffered as a child, or the vile way the press treated her when she was with Ellen. Sometimes when I see old Mad TV or SNL episodes again I'm reminded of just how ugly the national conversation was and how strong she was to even get past that period of time. She had a life full of pain, but I don't think that's how she would want to be remembered. Her work will continue to stand the test of time.

To go with what @vetsoapfan said in the ATWT thread about Jacqueline Courtney mentioning in an old interview that she had various episodes, I know Laurie Heineman said in the late '90s that she had had to buy the episode that ended up winning her an Emmy. I wish there was some way to know if these episodes are still around and to preserve them. Not to shame the people who spend their time and effort on those archives, but it's jarring sometimes to remember that people have invested far more in finding and restoring no-budget pornos filmed in rundown apartments in the '50s, '60s and '70s than has been spent on finding and salvaging old soap episodes that kept their networks solvent for years and years.

I also don't think Josette was ever intended as making a man lose his mind. She was always a tragic figure. I do think she was allowed more agency and voice before the actual Barnabas arrived. Aside from Angelique, to a degree, any woman in Barnabas' orbit tended to just suffer and pine and suffer and pine and suffer. It's one of the reasons the character never really appeals to me that much.
