The oldest skewing shows on TV are the news shows on FOX News, CNN and MSNBC. In terms of scripted, the longer a show is on the older it skews, hence why the soaps skew so old.

It's not so much the show/show's producers paying attention to those categories, it's the network/studio that will closely follow the show's performance in terms of ratings. It's my understanding that The Talk wasn't so much canceled due to low ratings from its CBS airings, it's the lack of viewership from streaming (Paramount+), YouTube, and minimal pop culture references in the same vein as The View which does well on Hulu, YouTube and is a daily topic due to their pivot to full-time politics discussion. Looking at the broadcast ratings, in particular, The Talk did 165,000 viewers in Women 25-54 to The View's 190,000 during the week of November 11-15, 2024. The Talk outperformed both GMA3 and NBC News Daily, and has done so all season. Similarly, among Women 18-49 viewers, The View pulled in 131,000 while The Talk pulled 115,000. Again, not so different. In the demos The View did a 0.20 rating in Women 18-49 to The Talk's 0.17, both rounded to a 0.2 rating. Meanwhile, in Women 25-54, The View did a 0.31 demo while The Talk did a 0.27, both rounded to a 0.3 rating. Point is, it isn't the ratings that got The Talk canceled because the show is essentially performing on par with The View in all the key demographics that sell ads, despite half the audience (1.221 million vs. 2.522 million). Therefore, it's the lack of ROI for CBS outside of broadcast that made the network decide to dump it. All that being said, as long as Beyond the Gates does as well as GH or better in the demos, and at least shows a substantial bump in viewership, they'll be happy with its broadcast performance. Meanwhile, they'll be even happier with the show having a big following in streaming, YouTube views and social media follows. It would also be a boon for them should the show skew much younger than the other four soaps, particularly in the 18-34 demo. By skewing younger, I also am referring to the median age. Currently, Y&R/B&B is about 73/71, with GH at 68/69. If BTG could do 60 or lower, that would be "cool" to them.

After hitting multi-year highs during election week (November 4-8, 2024), ABC’s “The View” returned to normalcy one week after former President Donald J. Trump was named President-elect Trump, according to the latest ratings figures released by the measurement company Nielsen. Averaging 2.522 million viewers during the week of November 11-15, 2024, the daytime talk show was down from the 3.078 million viewers who tuned in during election week, which at the time, led the show to draw its largest overall audience in more than three and a half years. The show’s post-election day episode (Wednesday, November 6, 2024) averaged 4.470 million viewers, attracting its largest overall audience in more than 10 years — since the late Barbara Walters‘ farewell episode (May 16, 2014). “The View” gained +145,000 viewers compared to the same week last year among Total Viewers (2.522 million vs. 2.377 million), marking the 10th time in 11 weeks that the series has posted year-to-year growth among Total Viewers. Meanwhile, among Households, the show was also up year-to-year. This year’s 1.73 rating Household rating was up +0.12 vs. the year ago’s 1.61 rating. Among Women 18-49, “The View” averaged a 0.20 rating, down from its 0.29 rating one week earlier. Among Women 18-49 viewers, the show averaged just 131,000 viewers in the key demo, down from the 193,000 viewers who tuned in during election week. Similarly, among Women 25-54, the talker averaged a 0.31 rating, down from the 0.44 rating it attracted one week earlier. During the week of November 11-15, 2024, “The Young and the Restless” hit a new season high in both key women sales demographics, averaging a 0.27 rating among Women 18-49 and a 0.49 rating among Women 25-54, up +0.02 and +0.06 week-to-week, respectively. Bluesky has quickly emerged as the social media platform of choice for those defecting from X (formerly Twitter) in the weeks following the U.S. Presidential election which saw former president Donald J. Trump declared President-elect Trump, soon to become the 47th president of the United States, and a change in X’s terms of service that went into effect on Friday, November 15, which allows the service to analyze text and other information provided by users to help in the “training of our machine learning and artificial intelligence models.” Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis, “General Hospital”) was one of the first major soap stars to flock to Bluesky immediately following the election, saying to her followers at the time, “I am here now as I can no longer defend speaking on a site controlled by a dangerous meglamaniacal [sic] oligarch.” She added, “My pg, my rules so trump supporters will be blocked. This is a safe space 4 those of us in need of a place to commune with like hearts & minds & humor when we can find it again.” Like her postings on X, Grahn continues posting about topics near and dear to her on Bluesky and has thus far amassed more than 5,500 followers since opening her account on November 6. What I find especially noteworthy in this VideoAmp data is that despite Stephen Colbert receiving a reported $15 million annual salary (as of 2019), his show gets fewer viewers than The Price is Right, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. Goes to show that even though the scripted shows in particular have more on-screen talent (i.e. cast) to pay for in their annual budgets, the overall budgets for each is nearly identical, if not less, than Colbert by himself. I believe networks are now scrutinizing those high salaries for late night hosts and news personalities, and this is evidence that they aren't worth all that much when their shows don't perform, at least among viewers, any higher than a "cheap" daytime soap. Just my opinion.

In a viral video posted to X (formerly Twitter) last Friday, “General Hospital” star Kelly Monaco can be seen giving a good speech to the cast and crew of the daytime drama series as she finished filming her final scenes as Sam McCall, which aired Friday, November 1. “I’ve been on this lot for 25 years, and you have all been my family – not only my second family but my first family – and I just thank each and every one of you for all these memories and this experience that I’ll take with me for the rest of my life,” said an emotional Monaco, as she held back tears while holding a bouquet. “Mark Teschner [show’s Casting Director], you started this whole journey for me and it has been a wild ride,” Monaco noted in her speech the 21 years she played Sam on “General Hospital” and her more than three-year run as Livvie Locke on “Port Charles.” Teschner cast both shows during his 35 years at ABC. “It will not be the last you see of me,” Monaco concluded in her speech, which received a resounding applause from those in attendance. In addition to Monaco herself, other notable individuals shown in the video included Monaco’s now former on-screen mother Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis), former on-screen love interest Dominic Zamprogna (Dante Falocneri), director Phideaux Xavier, Teschner, and executive producer Frank Valentini, among other cast, crew and producers whose faces could not be made out due to the low quality of the video. On Tuesday, November 19, “General Hospital” will air a multi-episode celebration of life (i.e. funeral) for Sam, wherein friends, family and loved ones will share their fondest memories of her. The episode also marks the revival of the Lulu Spencer character, now played by Alexa Havins, who is waking up from a four-year coma following a bomb explosion at the Floating Rib bar back in November 2020. The bomb was planted by Julian Jerome (William deVry) at the behest of Lulu’s uncle, Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), and it took the lives of Dev Cerci (Ashton Arbab) and Dustin Phillips (Mark Lawson). Although Cyrus has yet to be discovered as the ultimate culprit for the explosion that led Lulu to lose a key time in her life, viewers are beginning to suspect that he might have been the one behind Sam’s death after she willingly donated a piece of her liver to help a comatose Lulu. Ignore them. Until we get to the February Discussion thread in 2025, this is the default thread for the show. With the full contract cast fleshed out, all characters/cast members can be discussed, have pictures shown, retweets, Instagrams, etc. Beyond the Gates is for all viewers,. not just one demographic. If it were, it'll fail. Exactly this. Until writing the ratings post I did earlier, I didn't think of anything else, but the more I see that phrase in PRs, the more it annoys me.

Exactly why I said the above. Regardless of one's politics, some extremists will see the summary of the show with the phrase "Black soap" in it and believe that the show isn't for them and that it is a DEI project, this can be said whether one is politically left or politically right, hence what I said about media and politicians. I want BTG to be a huge success for CBS, not just because they are highlighting an underrepresented demographic, but because it is a new soap opera in an era where soaps are "dying." I don't want B&B, GH, or Y&R added Black characters just because it's the "in" thing. I want them to add them and UTILIZE them because they have great characters with great storylines. The cynic in me is prepared for ABC/Hulu (and Peacock) seeing how BTG performs and thinking they must have a "Black soap" on their lineup/platform, too. Unfortunately, they will think it's just about the race bait and not the characters themselves, and ultimately ruin it with their potentially less-than-quality product.

Not to taint the thread, but I am seriously getting annoyed with the phrase "Black soap." Therefore, I'm personally not going to refer to the show as such. Does the show have a predominantly Black cast? Yes, but it is not a "Black soap." There shouldn't be such a thing, IMO. Just like there isn't a "White soap." For me, the phrase is a huge turn off for general audiences and I hope it doesn't deter people from tuning in, thinking the show can't be consumed by them simply because they aren't "Black." This can be said of White, Latino, Asian, or any other ethnic background. I've been thinking about this for a while, not just in terms of Beyond the Gates, but in general. Media and politicians like to place things into categories but only do so to fit certain key narratives, and I'm tired of it. For me, Beyond the Gates is just a daytime soap opera with a predominantly Black cast. Its storylines aren't going to be any different than the ones featured on other shows, with rare exceptions, and it shouldn't be put into a bubble where the world thinks it's just a soap catering to a specific demographic (an underrepresented one, yes), whereas the other soaps are geared towards everyone else. One of the things that has always bothered me about "Black" being used to refer to race when talking about shows or movies, is that the term "black comedy" doesn't refer to race at all. Dictionary definition: Although the same definition doesn't apply to "Black drama," I'm sticking to my stance on the matter overall. Ted Talk over.

Although not by timeslot, the soaps still compete among their genre. It would be very noticeable by CBS should Beyond the Gates outperform B&B among the demos, and viewers overall. So, while not direct competition since they'll be on the same network, the performance of both shows (and Y&R) will be closely watched, followed and studied by CBS execs.

Agree with the pros. Jill and Guza's GH was too dark and more concentrated on the core four. I wasn't much of a fan. Riche and Guza's GH was the best, not factoring in the 1999/2000 boyband craze with Emily/Juan/Lucky/Liz quad. According to Michele Val Jean, it wasn't Guza who wanted to exit Alan Quartermaine, and allegedly it wasn't JFP either. However, the late Jacklyn Zeman was ousted by JFP as Bobbie. The mob became the core of the show under Guza, yes. I do blame Frons more for that though as Guza was able to provide a well balanced show for the most part up until it became mob and central all the time with the four core (Sonny, Jason, Carly & Sam). That said, Guza is a great writer with many great ideas. I would consider him a visionary for the genre. Additionally, considering he's been gone from the industry for 13 years, I'm sure he has a lot of fresh ideas to present.
