Of course, there was a lot of mention of WW2 when it was happening. And there were mentions of the first commercial jet airplane in the 50s and such. Things like that. I was pleasantly surprised Paris got a mention. Especially because things like the JFK assassination didn't get a single mention.

On ATWT, the Kennedy assassination was referred to, too, although in an oblique way. Shortly after it happened, Penny lamented about the tragedy faced by the nation. She did not specifically state what she was referring to, but...everyone could figure it out.

Oh right, that's the line Rosemary Prinz adlibbed even though she knew she'd get in trouble. She said she felt she had no choice.

And she was right, IMHO.

It added realism to the show, and since so many fans saw Oakdale as being "real," anyway, I doubt any of them were shocked or offended by the acknowledgement of an event that had rocked the entire country.
