I was at a cardiologist appointment today, and just looking around the room while waiting for the doctor, and saw this cardiac bulletin and it had a section about Kawasaki Syndrome, and I immediately knew what it was thanks to the original BJ/Maxie heart transplant story! They talked about Maxieโ€™s diagnosis for I feel like weeks before the accident that killed BJ, and I have never forgotten what Monica told them. My brain retained something that has had zero impact on my life, mostly because of the name and how often they talked about it.

Have soaps taught anyone else actual knowledge?

If not for AMC and Erica's pregnancy, I never would've known about toxemia/preeclampsia (or that my own mother suffered with it while pregnant with yours truly).

As a child and pre-teen, I learned so much about sex, pregnancy, etc LOL. Anytime I didn't understand something, I asked my mom while we watched and she got very uncomfortable when answering. Many times, my dad didn't like that we had to have these conversations or that I was asking, and even threatened my mom and me that maybe I shouldn't be watching because I'm too young... but thankfully I always won and got to keep watching. ๐Ÿ˜›

So yeah, I learned what spotting was, what miscarriages are, abortions, etc. I learned about protection/condoms/STDs/AIDs. I'm sure there are other diseases and whatnot that aren't coming to mind right now. Oh probably prenups too.

Watching soaps basically taught me how to write this genre.

And yes, I did learn more about sex, and sexuality in general, from soaps than I ever did from school, etc. In hindsight, I might have been a little too young though ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm sure there were plenty of other things that I learned as well.
