Beyond the Gates, BTG, CBS, CBS Daytime, Key Art

It’s finally here. The day we have all been waiting for, some all of our lives, others only since it was first announced on March 6, 2024.

Beginning Monday, February 24, “Beyond the Gates” begins its historic daytime run on CBS as the the first new soap opera scheduled to air on the network’s daytime lineup in nearly 40 years (since “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 1987), the first new daily drama series to air on broadcast television in more than 25 years (since NBC’s “Passions” in 1999) and the first-ever one-hour Black-centric daytime drama series.

Set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington D.C., and in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States, “Beyond The Gates” is where viewers find a posh gated community filled with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions that the wealthy call home.

In anticipation of the new series, we have a breakdown of what you can expect as the show begins and progresses below.

Licensed Music/Product Placement

The first episode of the series opens with Daphnée Duplaix’s Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson driving her expensive Black Mercedes S-Class Sedan throughout the community as viewers get a lay of the land as Nicole makes her way to the Fairmont Country Club to meet her mother, Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie) and sister, Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley) for lunch. Licensed music featuring The Emotions’ classic song “Best of My Love” plays throughout the establishing scene. Following her arrival, Nicole exits her vehicle looking exquisite in her designer coat and matching skirt with a sleek black top.

Additional licensed songs are expected to be featured in the series, particularly the classics from the 70s.

Although Apple doesn’t appear to be a direct sponsor of the soap opera, nearly every character can be seen carrying a cell phone that one could not mistake for anything other than an iPhone, albeit without the logo, something ever more clear when the characters interact via Facetime (it’s not called that).

The Opening Title Sequence

As previously reported, the opening title sequence shown in the first episode is just one of several variations after the first couple of scenes set the tone for the day. The opening generally includes 12 of the show’s 20 contract cast members. In week one, just two variations are used. The full theme music and end title credits (likely only viewable on Paramount+) will play at the end of episode four (Thursday, February 27).

Commercial Breaks

The classic “[show is] sponsored by” and “[show] will return in a moment” are back! This is where Procter & Gamble comes in with their plethora of products that will be used when it comes to sponsoring the series. Not to mention the products that will surely be displayed within episodes as things come along.

Similarities Among Characters / Backgrounds

Nicole and Dani take after their mother and father, Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis) in their unique ways. Nicole is sturdy and level-headed like her father. Dani is authentic and will fight tooth and nail to protect what’s hers, particularly her family, like the traits of her mother. Nicole pursued her passion in the medical field as a psychiatrist, while Dani became a world-renowned model. Their mother is an EGOT, famous for her music, while their father is a retired politician who helped fight the good fight during the civil rights movement.

Like their parents, Dani and Nicole each have two biological children. While Dani has two daughters like their mother and father, Nicole has a son and a daughter.

Dani’s daughters are Naomi Hamilton (Arielle Prepetit) and Chelsea Hamilton (RohiniRose Mantilla) from her 30-year marriage to their father, Bill Hamilton (Timon Kyle Durrett), who left her for the youngest daughter’s best friend, Hayley Lawson (Marquita Goings). Meanwhile, Nicole is married to Ted Richardson (Maurice Johnson), and they are the parents of Martin Richardson (Brandon Clybon) and Kat Richardson (Colby Muhammad). They also helped raise Ted’s nephew, Andre Richardson (Sean Freeman), whose father died in a plane crash.

Martin, a politician like his grandfather, is married to Bradley “Smitty” Smith (Mike Manning), an accomplished journalist lured back into his former career but finds difficulty in sharing the news with his husband. Outside work, the two raise their adopted teenage children, Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) and Samantha (Najah Jackson), each of whom finds high school jarring. Meanwhile, Martin has difficulty of his own as trauma from his past causes nightmares that he keeps to himself while Smitty is at a loss on what to do to help.

The 27 Sets

The fact that a daytime drama series can boast that it has 27 sets is one thing. The fact that each of those 27 sets has its distinct looks and message, like an easter egg, is another. Between the portraits on the walls with a story to be told of their own, the awards on display at the Dupree home, including at least two Emmy awards on a high-level stand, along with the actual use of the piano in the living room by Naomi as she awaits finding out why her grandparents had placed an emergency call, with a specific ringtone and all, similar to bat signal, to members of the family requiring them to meet at the family home promptly at 7:00 p.m., only to reveal they are being forced to attend Bill’s wedding, after the former son in law threatened Vernon with revealing things he knows about the family, including where the bodies are buried. Meanwhile, Anita and Vernon vow to keep all the secrets, those yet to be revealed, to themselves. From the entryway to the foyer to the sitting room, to the living room, the Dupree family house is large and in charge.

The Fairmont Crest Country Club, the largest of the sets is where the bulk of the show establishes itself with many of the characters gathering here, considering how large it is and how much of a role it’ll play in the social scene. Not only is it where gossip is learned, and told, but it’s also the setting for many venues, including Bill and Hayley’s wedding where all the drama will unfold in the first couple of episodes.

Exterior shots of the various character homes, businesses and properties are fully on display but don’t worry, there is no inauthentic CGI like some soaps have tried in the past. Like “The Bold and the Beautiful” and its establishing scene of the Forrester Mansion, each location looks as real on the outside as it is inside, and that’s not a jab.

Fashion

As Christel Khalil (Lily Winters, “The Young and the Restless”) said last week at a private CBS party in Los Angeles celebrating the launch of “Beyond the Gates” joining the network’s daytime lineup, the soap screams MONEY!

While most characters come from wealthy families, no one’s style says “poverty.” That’s a testament to the work done by costume designer Jeresa Featherstone, who made each character have a style of their own to the point that you realize they aren’t just wearing clothes, they are wearing fashion, to answer “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star Bob the Drag Queen’s iconic question.

Sex vs. Love Scenes

As shown in the trailers and promos, one of the first “love scenes” will be between Dani and Andre, with the two having their first sexual encounter later in the week. Previously, one might have thought they had an agreement prior but it’s established this would be their first and last time. Of course, that’s what Dani tells Andre, but we don’t believe her. What’s great about the scene is it’s clear this is “sex” and not “love.” On other shows, characters forget the difference.

Overall, the scene is sexy, sensual, and sweet, especially with Dani ready to seek revenge against those she feels have wronged her. And we mean, revenge!

P&G Studios / End Credit Title Cards

While many had hoped the iconic PGP logo, or some variation of it would be on display along with the memorable beats that accompanied it at the closing of each episode of “As The World Turns,” “Guiding Light” and “Another World,” sadly, that’s not happening.

Instead, you get a more modern P&G Studios logo as a title card, including a candle for the “I” in studios. That said, the closing of each episode will end with “CBS Studios Production: A Paramount Company” accompanied by its CBS network jingle. The NAACP title card appears after the P&G Studios one.

“Beyond the Gates” airs weekdays at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. PT on CBS. Stream Live and On Demand on Paramount+.

    • I did notice a decline in the quality of the performers being cast once Betty R vacated/retired from her position. We would have been spared from the nightmares of some of the castings that dominated the show in the last decade or so of the soap. JFP was an example of someone, no matter the gender, who had no business being in the position they were in.
    • If Betty Rea was the casting director, why was so much of GL during JFP's reign cast by her? Walker, Deas, Crampton, Lando, etc. JFP takes credit for Dusay as well. What is the point of having a casting director, if you don't let her do her job? What happened when Rea left?
    • So much on here slips my mind but this is the first I remember hearing of Peterson's passing. Very sad. Nell was a thankless role, clearly set up for a cheating storyline with Frank, but Peterson did her best.  Betty Rea Rea was the casting director for the soap opera “Guiding Light” from 1970 to 1996 and simultaneously the casting director for “As the World Turns” from 1979 to 1983.
    • Sorry, just one more post on the Thorntons. How did Ruth and Edna feel about each other prior to Tad dating Dotty?
    • I can't remember exactly but I think it may be 1995 as Jake was trying to hide from a loan shark.
    • I also wonder if it was considered controversial at the time to show a morally corrupt doctor?(another character troupe for Agnes Nixon, the upstanding male citizen who is hiding secrets back at home) Up until the early 1970s, prime-time would very rarely tell stories about the private lives of doctors, because advertisers tended to shy away from such content. @robbwolff -- so is this wrong that Ruth dated David before marrying Joe?  Dr. David Thornton is a fictional character from the ABC daytime soap opera All My Children, portrayed by Paul Gleason from 1976 to 1978.  He was introduced as a respected physician in Pine Valley, presenting himself as a widower to his colleagues at the hospital. This facade, however, concealed a darker truth: his wife, Edna Thornton, was alive, and he was leading a double life. David’s character is defined by manipulation and secrecy, as he maintained a carefully curated public image while engaging in deceitful and criminal behavior in his personal life. His relationships were marked by control and betrayal, particularly in his marriage to Edna and his romantic entanglements with other women. David’s charm and professional status allowed him to navigate Pine Valley’s social circles, but his actions revealed a calculating and ruthless nature. Career David was a doctor at Pine Valley Hospital, where he was well-regarded by his peers for his medical expertise. His professional life provided him with a veneer of respectability, which he exploited to mask his personal misdeeds. However, his career was not a central focus of his storyline; instead, it served as a backdrop to his personal schemes. His position at the hospital gave him access to resources, such as the drug digitalis, which he later used in his attempt to murder his wife. David’s professional life unraveled as his criminal actions came to light, tarnishing his reputation in the medical community. Personal Relationships and Family David’s family and romantic relationships were fraught with tension and deception, shaping much of his narrative arc: Edna Thornton (Wife): David was married to Edna Thornton, with whom he had a daughter, Dottie. To his colleagues, he claimed Edna was deceased, allowing him to pursue other relationships without suspicion. In reality, David was plotting to kill Edna, motivated by his desire to be free of her and possibly to gain financial or personal freedom. He began poisoning her with digitalis, a heart medication, which caused her to experience heart pains. Edna was unaware of David’s true intentions until after his death, when the truth about his poisoning scheme was revealed. Dottie Thornton (Daughter): David and Edna’s daughter, Dottie Thornton, was a significant character in All My Children. Portrayed by Dawn Marie Boyle (1977–1980) and later Tasia Valenza (1982–1986), Dottie was raised primarily by Edna. David’s neglectful and manipulative behavior extended to his daughter, as he showed little genuine care for her well-being. Dottie’s life was impacted by her father’s actions, particularly after his death, when Edna became a wealthy widow. Dottie later married Thaddeus “Tad” Martin in 1985, though their marriage ended in divorce in 1986, and she suffered the loss of an unborn child with Tad. Ruth Parker (Fiancée, 1976): David was engaged to Ruth Parker in 1976, furthering his pattern of deceit since he was still married to Edna. His engagement to Ruth, who was also involved with Jeff Martin, highlighted David’s willingness to manipulate romantic partners for his own gain. The engagement did not lead to marriage, as David’s true intentions and double life began to surface. Christina “Chris” Karras (Lover, 1978): In 1978, David began a romantic relationship with Dr. Christina “Chris” Karras, a fellow physician. This affair added another layer of complexity to his web of lies, as Chris was unaware of his marriage to Edna and his poisoning scheme. After David’s death, Chris was initially accused of his murder due to their relationship and her access to medical resources. However, Jeff Martin’s investigation cleared her name by proving David’s death was caused by his own actions. Parents: David’s parents are unnamed in the source material, and both are noted as deceased. No further details are provided about their influence on his life or their role in his backstory. Death David Thornton’s death in 1978 was a dramatic and fitting conclusion to his villainous arc, brought about by his own treachery. Intent on killing Edna to escape their marriage, David had been secretly administering digitalis to her, causing her heart issues. In a twist of fate, their daughter, Dottie, innocently switched Edna’s drink with David’s during one of his poisoning attempts. Unaware that the drink was laced with a lethal dose of digitalis, David consumed it and suffered a fatal heart attack. His death was initially investigated as a possible murder, with Chris Karras as the prime suspect due to her relationship with David and her medical knowledge. However, Dr. Jeff Martin conducted a toxicology screen on David’s body, which revealed that the digitalis poisoning was the cause of both Edna’s heart pains and David’s death. This evidence exonerated Chris and exposed David’s plan to kill his wife, cementing his legacy as a tragic and self-destructive figure. Impact and Legacy David Thornton’s storyline, though relatively short-lived (1976–1978), was impactful due to its intensity and the ripple effects on other characters. His death left Edna a wealthy widow, altering her and Dottie’s circumstances and setting the stage for further drama, including Edna’s manipulation by conman Ray Gardner. David’s actions also strained relationships among other Pine Valley residents, particularly through his engagement to Ruth Parker and affair with Chris Karras, which intersected with Jeff Martin’s storyline. His character exemplified the classic soap opera archetype of a charming yet duplicitous villain whose downfall is precipitated by his own hubris. Additional Notes Portrayal: Paul Gleason’s performance as David Thornton brought a compelling intensity to the role, making the character memorable despite his brief tenure. Gleason’s ability to portray both charm and menace suited David’s dual nature as a respected doctor and a scheming husband. Storyline Context: David’s arc occurred during the early years of All My Children, a period when the show focused on intricate personal dramas and moral dilemmas. His poisoning plot and double life were emblematic of the show’s penchant for high-stakes interpersonal conflict. Lack of Additional Family Details: Beyond Edna and Dottie, no other family members (such as siblings or extended relatives) are mentioned in the source material, limiting the scope of his familial connections. Conclusion Dr. David Thornton was a multifaceted antagonist in All My Children, whose life was marked by professional success, personal deception, and a fatal miscalculation. As a doctor, he wielded authority and respect, but his secret plan to murder his wife, Edna, revealed a cold and calculating core. His relationships with Edna, Dottie, Ruth Parker, and Chris Karras were defined by manipulation, and his death by accidental self-poisoning was a poetic end to his schemes. David’s legacy in Pine Valley lived on through Edna’s newfound wealth and Dottie’s subsequent storylines, making him a pivotal figure in the show’s early narrative. His story remains a classic example of soap opera drama, blending betrayal, tragedy, and retribution.
