Let's Make a Deal, The View, The Young and the Restless, ABC, CBS, ABC Daytime, CBS Daytime

Despite the Memorial Day holiday, during which most shows were coded as specials and are therefore not factored into the weekly averages except for “The Price is Right” (3.666 million / 4.246 million), the week of May 27-31, 2024 was not a good one for daytime broadcast.

Currently in its 15th season, “Let’s Make a Deal” (1.923 million / 2.293 million) hit a series low among Total Viewers, with the first half-hour falling below two million viewers for the first time and the second half-hour attracting numbers in line with what the first half-hour had been averaging for most of the season. Both half-hours had the biggest week-to-week decline among Total Viewers, losing -100,000 viewers and -92,000 viewers, respectively. Compared to the same week last year, the second half-hour was down -315,000 viewers and the first half-hour was down -292,000 viewers.

“The Young and the Restless” (2.975 million) hit a new season low among Total Viewers and saw the biggest year-to-year decline overall, dropping -333,000 viewers compared to the same week last year.

“General Hospital” (1.853 million) once again averaged less than two million viewers, marking the seventh consecutive week the show has done so and the 13th time this season. Additionally, the series hit a new season low among Total Viewers, tied its series low among unrounded Women 18-49 (0.18 rating) and tied its series low among unrounded Women 25-54 (0.31 rating).

For the ninth time this season (not including ties), “The View” (2.259 million) beat its network sibling among unrounded Women 18-49 (0.19 rating for “The View” vs. 0.18 rating for “General Hospital”). Speaking of “The View,” the daytime talk show was one of only three shows to see year-to-year growth among Total Viewers, adding +55,000 viewers compared to the same week last year. The other two shows seeing year-over-year growth were “The Talk”* (1.218 million; +14,000 viewers) and “NBC News Daily” (1.110 million; +111,000 viewers).

What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of May 27-31, 2024 in Women 18-49, Women 25-54, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their performance during the comparable week last year. A closer look at the daytime soaps, including their daily performance breakdown in the demos, will be posted shortly.

Note: Households and Total Viewers for “TODAY 3rd Hour” and “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” were unavailable at press time.

Beginning August 31, 2020, national ratings include Out of Home (OOH) viewing. Previously, ratings did not include OOH viewing. Averages are based on regular telecasts.

Honestly, the show would have to undergo some further behind-the-scenes changes, at least before ABC cancels. Not just of the writing variety. And they will want to see how the show does against soap opera competition with The Gates coming aboard. Meanwhile, The View needs some attention. Although its total viewers are fine and the ladies talking about politics make headlines, the show's demos are just falling apart.

I expect things will be status quo leading to the election, but I won't be surprised to see some on-camera changes at some point thereafter in line with what they did in the early 2010s when ratings started to fall to levels that saw The Talk beating it on occasion. In fact, in unrounded Women 18-49 and Women 25-54, The Talk is nipping at The View, with nearly half the total viewers. CBS still canceled The Talk, which makes you wonder if ABC would be willing to live with numbers like this if CBS wasn't.

That said, streaming is all the talk when excusing rating declines, but with continued price increases, are people just watching shows on streaming or just tuning out overall? What does it truly mean to be a "Top 10" show on streaming? We still don't know. Only Netflix gives out any info that matters.

I can't tell you that. Of all the EPs, Frank is still the best at his job. The show is visually appealing, actually goes outside on occasion, and has a wide variety of sets. People have houses. Cast members interact with each other and aren't isolated. Half the cast isn't obviously on vacation, which is why they are missing for months on end, although some could use one.

In terms of running the show, Frank is the best of the best. I'm being very honest here. Even when soaps did better in the 90s and early 2000s, we never had such a visually appealing show. Now, that's my opinion, and I'm not including lighting in my thinking on the matter (GH could be lit better).

Agreed!  Frank has been the best EP for any soap opera for such a long time now.  There's a reason why GH can oftentimes feel like a soap that was produced in the 90's and 2000's, before the soaps got their budget slashed and sets/cast started to shrink.   They can still do big weddings and big events, and have 20+ cast members in an episods, or do Halloween and Christmas episodes with kids of characters we know, or do Nurses Ball, etc.

As for as his job safety......maybe if even safer now than before if he didn't make the decision to hire PM/EK as Head Writers.  He could go to the higher ups and be like "see......the ratings are low and they're not my HWs."

I forgot to add my point...haha.

That said, I don't believe Frank's job is in danger per se, but he's been there for over 12 years now. Someone will have to become the fall guy for the rating collapse, and one can't just blame the writers. Three writing regime changes in six months -- with a fourth likely to be announced shortly. That's an obvious problem.

I do think the show will see 65, but the people running it today aren't likely to be running it then. IMO.

If Frank and his chosen new HWs can get the show back to 0.3-0.4 18-49 demo and get to 2-2.3 million Total Viewers, I think he'll be safe for a long time.

If that happens, especially in this day and age, I totally agree! As long as GH can get back into the game against its soap opera competition, it'll be fine. In fact, in a bit of irony, the only way CBS/Sony would force changes at Y&R would be if GH becomes competitive again. Otherwise, only a successful launch for The Gates will force any substantial changes among the three remaining soaps.

More on The View vs. The Talk:

Among demo viewers (more important than the rating by itself), during the week of May 27-31, 2024, The View had 124,000 viewers among Women 18-49, while The Talk had just 108,000. Both shows beat GMA3 and NBC News Daily and generally round out the bottom half of the 13 daytime broadcast shows.

Meanwhile, in Women 25-54 viewers, The View had 163,000 viewers in the demo to The Talk with 162,000 viewers. Again, The Talk was canceled but costs a hell of a lot less than The View does in terms of talent cost.
