Six months after it was originally scheduled to air, two Hollywood strikes and a last-minute scheduling switch, “The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” finally took place on Friday, December 15.

While viewership was down significantly from last year’s CBS telecast, relatively speaking, there wasn’t much that could be asked for from an awards show that typically took place in the early parts of the summer compared to this year’s chilly December. Additionally, viewers could stream the awards show via Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, numbers of which won’t be disclosed unless provided by CBS and/or Paramount.

In the key Adults 18-49 demographic, which is where CBS makes its money, the awards show kept itself mostly on par with previous performances, more specifically since the show began airing almost exclusively on the network in 2020.

According to the Programming Insider website, Friday’s broadcast averaged 2.03 million viewers and a 0.14 rating in Adults 18-49. Among Adults 25-54, the two-hour show averaged a 0.19 rating. Meanwhile, among Adults 18-34, the show averaged a 0.09 demo rating.

Viewership peaked in the 9:00 p.m. half-hour with 2.12 million viewers tuned in, followed by the 10:00 p.m. half-hour at 2.08 million viewers. The first hour rated the best among Adults 18-49 (0.16 rating) and Adults 25-54 (0.20 rating).

Compared to last year’s telecast, the awards show was down -770,000 viewers and slightly down among Adults 18-49 when it did a 0.2 rating in the demo.

CBS aired “The National Christmas Tree Lighting” as a lead-in this year, which averaged just 2.13 million viewers and a 0.16 rating among Adults 18-49, leaving the Daytime Emmys not much to work with. That said, as shown by a breakdown provided during the 2021 telecast of “The 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards,” viewers still managed to tune into the awards show even after seven days. That year’s broadcast saw an uptick of nearly +300,000 viewers within seven days of its original airing.

For the night, CBS averaged 2.07 million viewers and a 0.15 rating in Adults 18-49, placing the network fourth among the five broadcast networks. ABC topped the night with a 2.95 million viewer average, led by an original airing of “Shark Tank” (3.14 million), followed by NBC, which averaged 2.52 million viewers thanks to its rebroadcast of “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” (2.73 million). FOX ranked third with its airing of “WWE Friday Night Smackdown” (2.15 million viewers). The CW aired “The 91st Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade,” which averaged a mere 550,000 viewers and a 0.06 rating in Adults 18-49 to place the network in fifth place.

Since 2022, the Daytime Emmy Awards have taken place on Friday nights from 9:00-11:00 p.m. In 2020 and 2021, the awards show aired on Friday nights from 8:00-10:00 p.m., a significant difference in scheduling when considering lead-ins.

What follows is a breakdown of how the Daytime Emmys has performed on CBS in recent years:

  • Total Viewers – 2.03 million
  • Adults 18-49 – 0.14 rating

“The 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” (CBS)

    • Some other thoughts on today's show. I don't care for Bill/Hayley as a couple. I think that Bill is sexy and looked good on today's show. But I don't think that him and Hayley really have any chemistry. They seem mostly isolated on the show unless someone like Dani is sparring with one of them. I do wonder what is going on with Bill's hand and why it is trembling. He is trying to keep that from Hayley. I also don't care for June right now. I like Jacob/Naomi but would rather see them do something else than what they are currently doing with June right now.  I liked Nicole/Dani continuing to support one another after the fallout from their marriages. I think it's interesting that Nicole asked Dani if something was going on between her and Andre and Dani lied about it. I do wonder if Dani/Andre are starting to have stronger feelings for each other (maybe even falling for each other a little bit). It does seem like stronger feelings are developing between them and I wonder where that may lead for their storyline. And I enjoyed Anita/Vernon as well. I like that he supports her and wants her to do the reunion with the Articulettes. It does seem like at one of them really doesn't want much to do with her after she reached out on today's show. But maybe they will reunite and there will be drama between her and her bandmates. I am interested in seeing who the show may cast as her bandmates. I hope they get a couple of good actresses in the role.
    • Looks like the Townhouse to me, I've been calling it Paulina's Townhouse (which Marlena and Kayla also use).
    • Angela Bassett was also on somewhere in 1985 wasn't she. The NY soaps did so much for struggling actors. That's one of the reasons I will never stop hoping we get more of them.
    • Oh, yeah as the episode went on, I love that they gave a plausible reason for him to back out. Most soaps who use an idea/story point to define a character would just drop it and make it seem so jarring and out of character. So I love common sense...or the SilkPress craziness...won out.
    • All these years later, and Shelly Burch is still one of the most striking women I've ever seen.
    • I really enjoyed today's show. Today was the most I have ever liked Martin. It was very sweet how he invited Eva to get to know his family. He has good chemistry with her (along with Kat). I liked how she got to know and started to bond with his family including Samantha who was understandably standoffish with her at first. I thought her styling Samantha with different looks at the end was cute. Martin's family is her family now too and I liked how he made that clear to everyone at pizza night at his home. The twins have a new Auntie.

I think it will be interesting to watch Martin/Eva bond along with her bonding with the rest of his family. And seeing how others including Nicole and especially Kat react to that. I thought for a moment that Kat might actually show up at pizza night after Martin invited her but she didn't. I also enjoyed Eva trying with Kat. They do have chemistry together and they are cute, lol. I do think they could end up being twins, but even if they aren't I still enjoy them together. Whether it's sparring or Eva trying to bond with her or whatever.
    • Hahaha. It was worth a try. Alas.
    • There were lots of spoiler pics for week of May 5-9 of Devon/Lily/Holden/Damian/Amy/Nate/Audra. I posted them on the spoiler thread that week because they all looked so pretty. I was hopeful.  Sorry to read in the recaps that it was mostly discussion of Dumas!
    • Random Hump Day Reactions Despite my better judgment about commenting on appearances—what is going on with Philip’s skin? He looks distractingly sunburned. Did the makeup team forget to use foundation? Or powder? Or that they’re broadcasting in high definition? Meanwhile, Kristen looked like the saddest Alice in Wonderland. The dirndl was cute, but everyone in that mansion could desperately use a pop of primary color—and a reason to smile. It’s one thing for Belle to be blinded by love for EJ. It’s another for her to hear him admit to kidnapping Rachel and treat it like a punchline. Overall, there's zero urgency from anyone about getting Rachel or Kat back to Salem. Most of the time, Kristen and Cat seem to forget their long-lost mothers are still being held elsewhere against their will. At least when Doc, Kayla, and Kate went missing, people cared. Paulina even talked to that urn! (Still waiting to find out who was in the urn, by the way…) Raise your hand if you believe Rachel innocently brought up Tate’s baby. If your hand is up, do not click on any suspicious email links today. You’re vulnerable. And finally, deep breaths: Jamey—or someone he edits—named the miracle drug Versavix. Fun fact: real drug names are developed by branding teams after the research is done. Versavix sounds like the draft name someone scribbled during a Red Bull crash and forgot to replace. This isn’t even a good fake drug name. It’s like they forgot that the same show once gave us a literal ‘love potion’ that made Sami fall for Austin. Versavix makes me nostalgic for the days of ‘L-dopa’ and Stefano’s mind control chips, at least they didn’t sound like a discontinued allergy medication. (crud, another day, another broken promise to stop complaining about this).
