Whoopi Goldberg, The View, #TheView

According to the latest figures released by Nielsen, “The View” experienced a season low in Total Viewers, Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 rating during the week of February 7-11, 2022, the only full week without the show’s moderator Whoopi Goldberg after she was suspended for comments she made on the Monday, January 31 broadcast. “If you’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it,” Goldberg said at the time. “Because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No, it’s not about race.” Goldberg and her co-hosts were discussing a Tennessee school district banning Art Spiegelman’s novel “Maus” from being taught in schools.

Goldberg later apologized for her comments, stating she “misspoke” and that the Holocaust “is indeed about race, because Hitler and the Nazis considered the Jews to be an inferior race. Now, words matter — and mine are no exception. I regret my comments, and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people.” She received condemnation from the likes of the Anti-Defamation League, the US Holocaust Museum, the Auschwitz Memorial, among other countless organizations and people around the world.

Despite apologizing, Goldberg received a two-week suspension from ABC News, producers of the daytime talk show. “Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments. While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities,” said Kim Godwin, President, ABC News, in announcing Goldberg’s suspension.

Set to co-star in the upcoming second season of the Paramount+ original series, “Picard,” reprising her role as Guinan from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Goldberg had been off “The View” starting with the Wednesday, February 2 broadcast through Friday, February 11. She returned on Monday, February 14, telling viewers, “We’re going to keep having tough conversations. And in part, because this is what we’ve been hired to do. And it’s not always pretty, as I said, and it is not always as other people would like to hear. But it is an honor to sit at this table and be able to have these conversations, because they are important. They are important to us as a nation and to us more so as a human entity.”

For the week of February 7-11, 2022, “The View” averaged just 2.195 million viewers, placing it ahead of “General Hospital,” “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna,” “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and “The Talk.” The show would have also beaten daytime soap “Days of our Lives” but the soap opera is currently on hiatus due to NBC’s ongoing coverage of the 2022 Winter Olympics from Beijing.

Although the show remained in 10th place in Women 18-49, the talker was down week to week, hitting a new season low with a 0.26 rating, which was just barely ahead of “GMA3: What You Need to Know” with its 0.25 rating and “The Talk” with its 0.23 rating.

Meanwhile, in Women 25-54, “The View” again ranked 10th (same as one week earlier) with a 0.39 rating. “GMA3” averaged a 0.36 rating in the demo to rank 11th and “The Talk” averaged a 0.34 rating to place 12th.

Compared to the full week of January 31-February 4, 2022, “The View” was down -283,000 viewers week to week. In fact, compared to the same week last year, “The View” was down a whopping -723,000 viewers. It should be noted, however, “The View” was experiencing a ratings boom last season stemming from its coverage of the 2020 election, the January 6 Insurrection, the Second Impeachment of President Donald J. Trump and the subsequent trial which resulted in the former president’s acquittal.

Using 2020 figures to better compare its performance, “The View” is down the most of any daytime broadcast series with a loss of -364,000 viewers from two years earlier, down -0.14 in Women 18-49 rating (tie with “The Young and the Restless”) and down -0.29 in Women 25-54 rating.

In the dailies, “The View” performed similarly to “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and “The Talk” in the demos. Check out the breakdown below.

    • I don't know if I could have seen that from her, honestly. But I feel like, outside of GH and her original DAYS stint, American daytime really didn't pay much attention to her, even though they should have.
    • Co-sign, 100% on this one. Xander was entirely in the wrong.
    • I'm seeing some interesting takes on this thread regarding Dani's behavior/personality, including right now. Here's my take on her: I think that Dani relishes in lighting people up. I think that's for multiple reasons.  I feel like Dani has probably largely been like this throughout her life. And that she gets joy in dragging people whenever she feels like it's necessary. I believe she feels like this is her being herself. I think one big reason why she's particularly giddy right now is because she's able to go back to acting this way, minus the hurt she's been dealing with due to Bill's affair. She got in Bill and Hayley's faces after their affair/wedding, but she was miserable doing it due to dealing with the hurt of that situation. Nicole's situation with Ted/Eva/Leslie allows her to act this way minus her suffering like she did at the hands of Bill. I believe she does empathize/care for her sister but is also interestingly enough rejuvenated by this situation. This situation is energizing her and making her act more like old self again, minus the being hurt by her own's husband's infidelity. I think Nicole's situation is a distraction for her from dealing with her own failed marriage to Bill.
    • Great episode, better than what the spoilers said. The gambling story was tolerable but Jon Lindstrom sucks in the role. Ambyr Michelle continues to shine. The diner and country club scenes were very well executed.  The Jan and Leslie scenes were very good! My favorite is Eva, now followed by Nicole.
    • Today's show was good. The only part I didn't care for were the Derek/Ashley scenes. I think they are bland together and Derek is very bland by himself. He is the least interesting character on the show IMO. I don't think they have much chemistry together. I appreciated Jan's reaction to Leslie. I like how regular/realistic her and Mona are as characters. Jan came across as very believable of being appalled and even hurt by Leslie's treatment of them and towards Eva in the diner.  Leslie continues to try and manipulate people with IMO her fake caring routine, only to show her true colors after she's confronted/called out for her treatment of others. I continue to dislike the way she mistreats Eva. Speaking of Eva she was great again today. I love her and I like how Martin comforted her in the diner. I liked that Vernon showed concern for her as well. They (especially Martin) will come around quicker to her before others (like the Dupree women) will. I also am glad to see her and Ted continue to bond and him behaving like a father towards her/helping her. He's the only one in her life who is fully trying to stand by her. I look forward to seeing their relationship grow.
    • Xander was screaming at Felicity.  He did do something wrong.  Felicity was clearly upset by it and Cat/Chad told him to stop.  That's fair.  No one deserves to be yelled at their job-and even I think this plot point is too preachy.  It's not acceptable behavior for anyone to do that.
    • When Derek finally appears with only a towel, and his chest and pecs/nipples are finally shown, I say yes.

    • Now, actually not. That thought had not even made it into my head, so, no, so far anyway, I've not seen that. Haven't seen today yet. What you're describing is warped & I think she's feeling genuine empathy & sister bond.
    • Xander was the bigger person apologizing to Cat when he didn't do anything wrong.  he wasn't yelling at Felicity whatsoever, he was asking if she possibly had given them the wrong order by mistake.  He was trying to get to the bottom of what was going on, but Chad/Cat were trying to white knight Felicity even though Felicity was being treated just like anyone else in that situation.   She was the one to bring the order out to them, and usually the person that brings the order out is the one that puts the order together.    I'm still getting a read on the Cat character.   I think she seems to work well when interacting with everyone other than Chad.   Perhaps the new writers can move Cat out of Chad's orbit into another orbit. Paulina has been written quite well the few times she's been on since the writer change.  I think Jackee is enjoying the new writing.. you can tell when she's on screen.
    • LOL - well, Peter was included in the grandkids' section, each named specifically with their $100K trusts.  It must have been the abs...

In Henry's will, he said it had to do with Hart having a chance at being a better person than his father, since his father isn't providing for him (I'm paraphrasing here, but it was about Roger).  Still a little surprised...
