Todd is almost hard to swallow now, but back then I went along with it.  They did do a good job of having opposing characters that didn’t let Todd forget his past and bad acts, like Roger on GL.

Around that 2003-2004 period the show had mostly redeemed these characters, but they still only existed on their side of Genoa City. They had their supporters, but their victims and victims families were allowed to dislike them and not want to be around them. It was the perfect balance I felt. Then as the writers changed it all shifted and their crimes were swept under the rug, their victims became the villains in the story and Kevin, Michael AND Phyllis were all turned into romantic heroes and heroine. I think they had gone too far with Michael before 2003.  I agree though that all three suffered as time went on.

ETA: It seems like Marco pretending to be Mario was used as a vehicle for the redemption.

Even as Mario and later Marco he did do some light scheming.  But nothing as bad as his earlier period on the show.  When he was on GH later I recall he schemed a little with Tracy too.  But nothing like pimping Katrina/Karen.
