"Guiding Light" will showcase a special episode on Wednesday, featuring three of its most popular characters through the years: Reva, Josh and Billy Lewis.

"It will make people dream about the '80s again," says Kim Zimmer, who has played brassy Reva Shayne Lewis since 1983. "Or make them wish Reva had stayed married to Billy."

The premise is that Reva has been invited back to their old high school in Tulsa, Okla., to speak to the "Future Female Leaders of the World."

"She says she's not going because what could she possibly have to offer women of the world when she was once considered the slut of Springfield?" says Zimmer with a laugh. "Her reputation was for getting it done in the back seat of all the local boys' trucks - which were basically just the Lewis men - so she feels it would be embarrassing."

Billy, who is trying to rekindle things with Reva now that she's estranged from his brother Josh, persuades her to go.

"They set off on a road trip. Billy's sleeping and Reva's driving and she starts fantasizing about various things," Zimmer says. "One of them is the fact that she was never married to Josh. She's been married to Billy this whole time. Vanessa [another of Billy's ex-wives] factors into that in a really wonderful way."

Then Josh appears.

"It's kind of like an 'It's a Wonderful Life' situation where you have all the things that would have gone on had Reva and Billy stayed married. And Josh has been married to Sonni the whole time."

Reva is jolted back to the present when she gets to her high school.

"She has a speech all written, but she throws it away and speaks from her heart," says the actress. "It ends up being all about destiny. Of course, Josh shows up to screw it all up for Billy, so Billy [who is an alcoholic] starts secretly imbibing. Reva has a great day, she makes this great speech, and they all go back to Cross Creek to celebrate. But on their way back from Cross Creek, they have a car accident and that's where the episode picks up in real time."

Is Billy driving under the influence?

"We never see him take a drink," Zimmer responds, "but it's implied. Josh hides the bottle from the police."

The point of this cruise down memory lane is that "Billy is trying to show Reva that she has more to offer the world - or another man - than what Josh is capable of giving her at this point in her life. If she has the self-confidence to move on, Billy would be more than happy to help her in his own wonderful way."

Even when he sees what Reva would have worn if they had stayed down on the farm.

"There's some marabou and fake fur involved," says Zimmer. "And big earrings and big hair. The whole episode is a little gift to the hangers-on who have watched the Lewis family through all their trials and tribulations."
