I don't think Inception/Nolan would have won this WGA award had The King's Speech been eligible.

I just don't understand how TKS is an "original" screenplay when it's based on a true story.

Inception is not a good script. Even the critics who praise the film agree with that.

It's considered original because it isn't based on previously published material like a book or play. Factual or real-life events don't factor in.

The Social Network, for example, is considered "adapted" because it's based on Ben Mezrich's book The Accidental Billionaires.

Ah okay, I get it. So they HAD to place it in the "original" category.....even though it's based on real-life events/people. Even though it's not "adapted" I think TKS is more in that category than "original."

The King's Speech was disqualified for some union rule based on it's agreement with its affiliates (the British Guild in this case), not its content.

Seidler wrote the screenplay in the United Kingdom and used only British agents and lawyers to handle his contractual details, which the WGA doesn't allow. Had he used American agents and lawyers, he would have been eligible. Seidler is a WGA member though.

In regards to TKS, I heard an interview about it recently Geoffrey Rush on The View I think it was in which the author had asked the Queen Mother if he could write it, but she had reqiested that he didn't do it while she was still alive. He also mentioned how the script was delivered directly to his door.

The King's Speech was a great film, well acted, technically sound... but really what sets it apart from dozens of Best Picture winners from years gone by? Its your typical "Oscar" film and I think its very sad the Academy once again will miss the opportunity to be innovative. Strong field of 10 this year, and I personally think at least 3 of them are innovative and very atypical of most Oscar-esque movies... I guess as always the nomination will be their prize. I really don't care what happens tonight, just as long as Fincher wins Director, Portman wins Actress and Roger Deakins FINALLY wins an Oscar for his beautiful cinematography in True Grit. Its criminal he's never won.

Oh well... I'm as always still excited for the awards
