He's bleeding out and it also looked like Hershel went into shock. My other favorite moments: Rick pulling over the Walkers head armor and the face coming off. Maggie stabbing the Walker in the neck and looking at the others and saying "see that." Really, it did not make sense them for them to take Herschel over Carol. If anything happened with Lori and the baby, they would need Herschel.
