Re: Kyle, he comes across as a replacement for both Alan and Josh.

Going by the timeline, Chris Bernau and Robert Newman both departed 1984 and returned 1986, and Larkin Malloy arrived 1984 and departed 1987.

I vaguely recall a quote in SOAP OPERA DIGEST around that time that Kyle was indeed brought into replace the "good boy/bad boy" character of Alan when Bernau announced he was leaving.

Aha! I could not remember why Bernau left in 1984, if it was his choice or if they wrote him out. (Which would have been a crazy thing to do, but Kobe pretty much decimated the cast she inherited). Thanks for confirming.

LOTS of people didn't/don't like Kyle/Malloy, but I think the canvas could have withstood two powerful men, especially since Kyle was entrenched with the Lewises. They could have had a Josh/Reva/Kyle triangle and kept Alan out of Reva's orbit.

It was likely a money thing or Malloy didn't want to share the spotlight or both.

LOL, that would have been from the time Reva was first introduced. Reva's accent was WAY heavier in the beginning. She was wearing fur because as Billy's ex she squandered a lot of her divorce money.

While we're talking about it, does anyone know what the deal was with Billy and Reva's divorce? Reva comes to town claiming it's not legal, and that's not her signature.  Billy looks at it and knows it's not her signature. Was there ever an explanation about it? Did Alan just forge some documents and Reva went along with it?

Re the porn tape...I think Alex knew about it because I think she took it with her to Venezuela after Sonni shot Alan. But I'd have to rewatch the eppy again.

I'm thinking it had to be for real because Reva later willingly gave Billy the divorce without asking for more money. If it was a fake she could have just told him. They already knew about Alan's involvement.  That's what broke up her and Josh, IIRC.

Why did Chris Bernau exit in 1984?

Good question! I don't think it was his health at that point since he came back later.

It could have been as simple as he'd done heavy front-burner stories for 7 years and wanted a break. Maybe he didn't like working with Kobe. (She was gone by the time he returned). Maybe he asked for more money and they said no.

Anyone have any intel?

OMG, OMG, OMG...I'm just finding out what a mess this story became.

I've been simultaneously watching the early 1988 part of the story--just before the writer's strike started--and the 1989 wrap-up.

The story makes ZERO SENSE.

This is the tip of the iceberg. There are so many things that were changed/dropped/forgotten. Sonni's appearing and disappearing parents, Will's mother who was perfectly sane the first time we see her, then she's a nutjob for no apparent reason. Somehow Will went from becoming a Venezuelan defrocked priest to a psychiatrist to Josh's buddy who sounds like he grew up in in the USA.

Mess doesn't even begin to describe this story.

The scabs can't be blamed for this!

I have re-read this so many times.  Wow!  Will's background changed that much?  A defrocked priest to an American friend of Josh?

I am still trying to figure out when and why Mindy and Will got married. I could have sworn I watched a 1998 episode and Mindy is consoling Frank by saying Will is just a friend while letting Will live in her house! This was before Kimberly Simms took over in 1989 where she is married to Will.

@DeeVee I mean at the end when Sonni was not on Roger and Blake's side anymore.

@P.J.  Bonita Solita?  So hilarious!

@Matt Powers  I am guessing he wanted a break!

He Americanized his real name (Guillermo Ibarra to Will Jeffries).

There's an early scene between Josh and Will after they get to SF where Will says something like, "Don't you wish we were back in Venezuela drinking margaritas and eating huevos rancheros?"

Those are not Venezuelan, they're Mexican foods. Now, sure, you can get those things in Venezuela--by going to a Mexican restaurant in Venezuela. But I thought at the time that was the writers showing Will as a kind of Ugly American who knew nothing about the country he had been living in.

I gave them too much credit. They just didn't know the difference between Mexican and Venezuelan food. 😂

Nope. Josh finds some of the porn movies later on. Those are episodes I saw in English. So the reveal was Sonni did those as the Solita personality. That does not explain how she was falling off a cliff on her honeymoon with Josh around the same time, as was implied in the 1988 episode.

Okay I LOVE Sonni/Solita...gothic weird touching on things that would be very controversial if it was a Doug Marland type of "Very Important Storyline" but using the genre's conventions can do it: religious intolerance, parental abuse, porn, S&M, suicide, women's sexuality...as I said touched on them and probably what makes people think this is a hot mess.

And yes, the porn was different then the scene with the bitchy but hilarious director telling Sonni she is a has been (at 28.) But yes, the cliff thing and timelines were whacked out. This was the last time I liked Reva and Josh as they were support for the story, and Reva still had some ..oomph.

That scene was wild, and not in the way you would think. She's peeling potatoes and asking two guys about someone named Barney. I know porn is not known for great writing, but wow. 😂

Bonita Solita?  So hilariou

They should have implied that AM was wanking off to that and he recognizes her. Actually I would have made it cheesy Rusty so she would have to knock him off to protect her secret..."Now I have the burn his tapes...damn he has Bonitas Solita/Juanita too, what a perve..and really not my best work."

Wow. That's highly cringey. I'm glad I missed that dialogue when it aired. How long does it take to research the cuisine of a country? That kind of sloppy writing just annoys me.

No, HB didn't find out that Reva was working for Alan until after Billy and Vanessa got married. After B&V got married, Reva and Josh went to Cross Creek and he proposed. They made that announcement and HB confronted her privately and gave her 2 weeks to tell Josh. That was like midMarch.

Its like how corporations or hospitals are run, its not too hard to do some research...(such as, Mindy most likely could not have gotten into a signed in computer and changed Nick's DNA...Cedars was one big lawsuit waiting to happen...) I know you have to suspend reality but don't make it sloppy.

Breen is good, but why make Will Venezuelan and not hire a hispanic actor to play him? I loved when Sonni/Solita would call him "Guillermo" to get him reved up for some S/M sex!

What episode is this? Sounds hilarious.

@Mitch64 You are too much. I am dying with laughter with your version.
