So proud of and happy for OUR Nia Long.

Yes, I will always consider her "ours" since she got her big break on GUIDING LIGHT.

I am absolutely delighted she is in the ultra-successful movie MICHAEL playing another Katherine...Katherine Jackson. She is so GOOD showing what an impossible situation Michael's mother was in with the horrible husband and father that was Joe Jackson.

I am so happy she has reached such a high point in her career. Her contributions as Kat Speakes were important back in the day. For the first time GL was committed to making black characters actually viable and not window dressing/sounding boards. One of the wild things about new soap BEYOND THE GATES is seeing that dynamic completely flipped.

Anyway, I have always been excited when Nia has popped up in new projects but this is just so wonderful for her.

I'm happy too, although I see she is not being paid as promised, from what she's claimed.

Tom O'Rourke was interviewed in the TvGuide Soaps about returning to GL in 1990 (for 4-6 months) but he just signed a contract with NBC for the Working Girl series (with Sandra Bullock) so he had to turn it down. Interestingly, the Justin character lasted from May 1990-April 1991 but Christopher Pennock was just too bland

Wow, I had no idea! What a shame (since that TV show flopped, IIRC). I'd always heard he was very upset about being fired, but by 1990 Kobe was gone and he must have been more open to the idea of coming back for a while.

It wasn't that Pennock was bland, he just was the wrong type to play Justin. Although Justin was always successful with the ladies, he had a definite intellectual vibe. Pennock kind of looked like an aging surfer dude at this point in his life. Maybe they were trying to make him look more like he could be GA's father?

I don't think they really had any plan for Justin, outside of being Sam's belligerent father and Daniel's mentor. Which is a shame, Justin could've been a very welcome return if handled right. But it never felt like GL invested in the role, which is unusual for the time. Maybe not getting Tom back made them rethink the entire idea? Casting Pennock feels like an unserious choice.

PS said that on his walk out of the studio, he played TAPS on a bagpipe! So odd, that they got rid of him as they had the Phillip reveal and my Mom thought he was "SEXY" so I am sure a lot of other at that time middle aged ladies thought so as well.

Justin's return was the final months of Long tenure..(Reva is just starting to go nuts) so that may have been part of it, though I am sure he had it in more for Kobe as he was mad they were getting rid of all the vets and that was really more on Kobe.

I’m up to July 09, 1999.

Buzz and Selena have their first date at the Towers and Buzz is overly nervous and fumbles everything. They realize it’s too fancy for them so they run out and go to a comfortable sports bar where they watch and bet on the horse races. They end up winning and have a great night. They spend the next day together too and have another nice kiss.

Vanessa and Matt are finally back (7/07)! It’s been forever, and Vanessa’s hair is back to her shorter black color. They’re meeting Bill and Pilar for dinner, which makes Vanessa nervous given Pilar is part of the Santos family. It starts off well, but when Vanessa tells Bill there is a good job opportunity at Spaulding for him, he tells her he already accepted a job at SanCorp. Vanessa realizes it’s one of Carmen’s businesses and isn’t happy about it, saying she does not want her son involved with that company. Pilar says that Bill is brave and can do anything, to which Vanessa asks why he’s brave. Pilar mentions the shootout and then church bombing, but realizes Bill never told them about it when she sees Vanessa become irate. As they argue, Bill says people warned Vanessa about Matt being too dangerous when they first got together (which is such a weak defense/comparison to me), but Vanessa says she’s lost one child (Dinah) because she couldn’t protect her, so she’s not losing a second child. She says there’s no way in hell she’s allowing him to be with Pilar or work for SanCorp, which upsets Pilar and makes her run out of the Towers. Bill chases after her and brings her back, ordering Vanessa to apologize to her, but she doesn’t and Bill says she can’t tell him what to do with his life anymore. He’s going to continue dating Pilar and take the SanCorp job and there’s nothing she can do about it, leaving Vanessa stunned.

Susan is at camp and Jim stops by to visit her. She’s miserable and wants to leave, but he won’t let her, so she says she hates him and will emancipate from him when she gets home. Jim is sad and tells her he can’t lose both Connie (his wife) and her, which makes Susan sad. They finally hug and she apologizes and he leaves. On his drive home, he calls Beth and tells her the camp was a good idea, and they make up and plan their next date, which makes Beth happy. Drew then shows up and tells Susan about Max running away, saying she never had a chance to tell Max about adopting him, which makes Susan scared for him. Drew then says she needs her help because she’s the only one that can get him to come back home. They cry together and bond over their different loves for Max and they make a pact that whoever finds him first, they have to tell him what he means to each of them. The next day, Drew and Jesse receive a letter in the mail from Max, which says he’s spending time with friends and clearing his head and he’s sorry for causing them any stress. This makes Drew happy knowing he’s alive and ok.

The next morning, Beth leaves to have her quick coffee date with Jim in his car in the driveway. Lizzie wakes up and realizes she’s home alone yet again, so she calls Annie and says she’s lonely and wants to see her. Annie comes by and they play and goof around and Lizzie loves having her around. Lizzie hugs Annie just as Jim and Beth walk in, prompting Beth to ask what she’s doing there. Annie says she’s doing what she (Beth) should have been doing all along, comforting her daughter. Jim leaves for work and Annie/Beth get into it which makes Lizzie upset. Lizzie starts crying and hugs Annie, who keeps telling Beth how she’s not a great mother, when Alan walks in and tells Annie to be quiet. Lizzie says Annie is right and she was lonely and couldn’t find Beth, so she asked Annie to come over, like she had done many other times which was their little secret. That surprises Alan and Beth, but Alan is adamant that Annie leaves Lizzie alone and they can no longer see each other since Phillip won’t allow it. Beth takes Lizzie away and Alan tells Annie he’s very close to the end of his rope with her. He says if she doesn’t stay away from Lizzie, he will drop her completely, once and for all, and Annie runs out of the house crying.

Danny and Michelle are at the Santos mansion packing for their honeymoon in San Cristobel when Carmen arrives. Michelle asks to speak to Carmen alone, and Carmen eventually says she wants to gift the family home in San Cristobel to her and Danny as a wedding gift, which shocks Michelle and she thanks Carmen. While alone with Dietz, it’s clear Carmen’s words to Michelle were just a ruse and she still doesn’t like her. Danny comes in and Carmen asks Michelle to deliver chocolates to a family friend in San Cristobel, which Michelle finds odd. Privately, she tells Danny she doesn’t want to deliver chocolates, but Danny says they’ve always done this on every visit and she shouldn’t worry. She shakes the box and says it doesn’t sound like chocolates, so Danny tells her to open the box. She does and it’s really chocolates, which Danny lovingly rags her about. They leave for the airport, and Carmen, having seen the chocolates be opened, tells Dietz that her plan worked - she has Michelle’s trust now, but the next time Michelle goes down to San Cristobel, there will be more than just chocolates and she will have to earn her keep if she plans to be part of the family.

The next morning, Carmen and Ben are flirting and kissing at the Santos mansion when Vanessa arrives. Vanessa sees Ben and says she should have known he was connected to Carmen. Vanessa then calmly and coldly tells Carmen to stay away from her son or she’ll make her very sorry (wow, go Vanessa!). Carmen says she had no idea Bill was hired at SanCorp, but Vanessa isn’t fazed. Ben then makes a call and tells the person to fire Bill and asks Vanessa if she’s happy. Vanessa starts to leave and Carmen tells her she’s doing a great job raising a fine young man, and Vanessa thanks her, but says she wants an alive young man and leaves. Ben and Carmen start kissing again, rip each other’s clothes off and have sex on her desk.

Reva and Josh are still waiting for the police the next day in San Cristobel, but sees Olivia’s picture in the newspaper. They realize she’s the secretary that is marrying Prince Richard and Reva gets amped up knowing that Olivia recognized her. A police detective finally comes and says because nothing was taken, there’s nothing they can do, which infuriates Reva and Josh. They take the ring to a local jeweler, who claims to know nothing about the ring other than it was custom-made. He says he’ll ask his other jeweler friends, and asks to keep the ring for a bit so he can continue examining it. After Reva/Josh leave, he makes a call to someone and says Reva was there and acted like she knew nothing about the ring or the child inside the ring. Later they’re walking around their resort and notice the jeweler, the detective from before and Olivia huddled together talking, which freaks them out, with Josh saying the police are now involved and they need to get out of San Cristobel immediately.

Danny and Michelle arrive in San Cristobel and Michelle is amazed by the family home they’re staying in. While Danny is getting champagne, a man walks in with many gifts. Michelle assumes he’s an employee of the family, so she asks if he’s a driver, gardener, etc but Danny walks in and calls him Your Royal Highness. Michelle is so embarrassed, and Danny introduces her to Prince Edmund, who is the younger brother of Prince Richard (7/08). I have to say, this Edmund is very handsome and has a wonderful British accent. Danny and Edmund seem to be long-time friends and is happy that Danny has found a beautiful woman to marry. Edmund makes reference to Carmen and says he never got along with her, which Michelle says she can relate. They later talk about Prince Richard’s upcoming wedding and Michelle asks about Olivia on his way out, and he says she’s a very complicated woman.

Later, Danny and Michelle run into Reva and Josh, who are still panicked. They’re all shocked to see each other and Michelle asks why they’re there. They officially meet Danny and I’m wondering why Danny or his family wouldn’t have recognized Reva now if they’ve been going to San Cristobel his whole life, and knows the royal family - hmm. Josh is trying to get them to leave immediately, but Reva wants to wait and get her ring back, so Michelle offers to get it for her later. Reva/Josh leave and Danny/Michelle contemplate why they were acting so weird and seemed scared for their lives. Danny then says there’s no way Michelle is going to get that ring for Reva because they’re on their honeymoon and it’s clear Reva is running from something bad. Meanwhile, Josh is packing their stuff quickly, but Reva puts her foot down and is now determined more than ever to face her past, which makes Josh angry. He says there is no way they are staying and they start running with their luggage to the car. As Michelle is trying to convince Danny there is no harm in helping Reva, they hear police sirens from their dinner table. Michelle gets up, walks to the open window and they see the police blocking Josh and Reva’s car. Everyone is shocked as they arrest Josh and Reva, separate them and put them into different cop cars, yelling out each other’s names throughout! This is actually quite entertaining, I’m really enjoying the start of San Cristobel!

Reading the San Crud start...how the hell did Reva, who had amnesia when she went to Goshen, have a box full of San Crud mementos after (spoiler alert but come on, you see it coming as soon as he appears on screen) Edmund tries to kill her and dumps her body in the drink..only to have the ever convenient fishing boat lug her butt out of the water again...(she had it all wrapped up in plastic bags strapped to her thighs?) Dumb, dumb, dumb...though I do like at the beggining where everyone in SC hates her..."Oh, it her..she's BACK"which mirrored some of the viewers when Kimmer came back. I find Reva so much more fun when she has people hating and annoyed with her.

I like Liv and I liked her being tied to the Spauldings, and of course, despite her personal probs with GA, they smoked up the chemistry and she sparring with JoanAlex was fun.) I also thought Edmund was a good addition..an entiteld prince without a kingdom or any money who has to scheme..woudl have made a great pairing with India, and I did like him with SexKitten JoanAlex.

Oh my, Edmund really is a villain! Haha - a sexy one at that. You raise a great point though - how in the world would she have SC mementos stored in a box in Springfield when (I assume) she went straight to Goshen from SC? And they're not wet... haha.

Ohh what's the story with Grant and Crystal???

sigh ...the contortions they did to give Reva story shakes head

LOL. And I'm still so confused how Ghost Reva was even a thing. I need to go check my notes (although sadly I was not at all detailed for 1995 like I have been with 96-99)... but maybe there was a throwaway line that Josh was just having visions/dreams? I could have sworn Annie saw her though too.

What irks me is I don't think they ever explained Reva being seen alive in that tourist video that sends Josh off searching for her. (I've always wanted to see those scenes but don't know where to look - did Kim return for them?) It also strains credulity beyond belief that she ended up in both San Cristobel and the Amish country, amnesiac both times.

At least when they did a similar setup on GH in 2000, Vanessa Marcil returned briefly to cameo as Brenda and send Jax off hot on her heels. She also had a few lines, but what I most appreciated is the tiny story detail which they did in fact pick up two years later re: her being involved with a powerful man (Luis Alcazar). They didn't just discard the tease when they got to bring the actor back full-time. They made the clues count for something beyond a tool to exit the other partner.

Whom on GL didn't have beef with GA, and did he have issues at Capitol and/or All My Children?

The people Crystal Chappell didn't have issues with is a shorter list.

I'm sure there are folks in daytime who still hold grudges from when she was a dayplayer on AMC, lol.

IIRC, she didn't. The travel video - which, I agree, shouldn't have been dropped - was a sort of Carlivatian device where characters would look at it on TV, but we ourselves didn't see any of it. At least, that's my recollection. Maybe they showed the actual footage and I just didn't catch it that day, lol.

Desert Sun, Number 120, 22 December 1983‘Guiding Light’ writer looks for fresh ideas

By TOM JORY Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - “Guiding Light” has been a daytime companion for millions since 1937, starting on radio and switching to TV after 15 years. Can anything new, really new, ever happen to the Bauers or the Reardons or any of the other folks in Springfield? “I get really upset,” says Pamela Long Hammer, principal writer for the CBS soap opera since March, “because I’ll come up with this neat scenario and someone will say, ‘That’s like “Strangers on a Train.’” “I think, ‘They keep stealing my material.’ “The way I figure it,” she says, “there are only so many stories in the world. It’s the characters who keep the show new and exciting. All of our stories come from them: I don’t come up with a plot, and then work a character into it.” Continuity is important. Someone out there surely knows all that’s happened, to everyone on the show, in 46 years. How about Miss Long Hammer? "Nope. I care about what our core families have been doing,” she says. “I’m always interested in what happened to Bert Bauer (played since 1950 by Charita Bauer) 20 years ago, but as far as going back and reading scripts, no. “Others on the show keep track,” she says. “I’ll suggest something, and be told, ‘You don’t remember, but fiveyears ago, they had this terrible fight. They would never speak to one another now.”’

Miss Long Hammer, a former Miss Alabama who came to New York as an aspiring actress in 1980, began writing for daytime television while playing Ashley on NBC’s “Texas.” She eventually wrote herself out of the story. Her staff for “Guiding Light” includes nine writers, among them her husband, Charles Jay Hammer, whom she met while both worked on “Texas.” NBC dropped “Texas” after two seasons, and episodes from the serial currently are being rerun on the Turner Broadcasting System’s cable-TV SuperStation, WTBS. Gail Kobe, who was executive producer of “Texas,” now has the same job on “Guiding Light.” And Beverlee McKinsey, who played Iris Carrington in “Another World” on NBC, and later in "Texas,” will join the Light” cast of the CBS soap in February. Miss Long Hammer is reponsible for the long-term story, which can mean looking ahead 18 months or more. Staff writers deal with specifics, including the scripts for individual episodes. She says she draws on “imagination and instinct” for the “Guiding Light” story. Often, that involves inventing new characters. “‘I look at Vanessa (Maeve Kinkead), one of our leading ladies,” Miss Long Hammer says. "What could make theaudience care more about her? “Then I think, ‘Why can’t she find a man she can love, who will also love her?’ Voila, here comes Billy Lewis (Jordan Clarke).

“Another example,” she says, “is Alan Spaulding (Christopher Bernau). All of a sudden, he’s got a sister no one ever knew about. “They come complete,” says Miss Long Hammer of the serial’s characters, including the new ones. “We know who they are and where they came from long before the viewer gets all that information. That’s one of the most interesting things about daytime, the complexities of the characters.”

The writers make a big effort to keep the show contemporary, and four of the leading players are in their lateteens or early 20s Judi Evans, who plays Beth Raines, Kristi Tasreau (Mindy Lewis), Grant Alcksander (Philip Spaulding) and Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer). “Guiding Light,” longevity notwithstanding, is a moderate success by that ultimate yardstick of the industry; ratings. The show is behind only “General Hospital,” “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” all on ABC, and CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” among soaps. And Miss Long Hammer says she’s convinced writing is the key to even greater achievement. “When I say I love the characters, it’s not a light thing,” she says. “I think what the audience senses is an enthusiasm and an energy among the people who do the show.”
