Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger found dead at 28

James Bone in New York

The actor Heath Ledger was found dead from a possible overdose last night, only days after shooting his latest film in East London. He died in a loft apartment in the trendy SoHo neighbourhood of New York.

Police said that the 28-year-old actor had been found when a masseuse called at the apartment for an appointment. A housekeeper went to tell Ledger that the masseuse had arrived, and found him dead at about 3.26 pm. Initial reports said that he was naked and face-down, surrounded by pills.

“We are investigating the possibility of an overdose,” Paul Browne, a spokesman for the New York Police Department, said.

Ledger, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Brokeback Mountain, will soon be seen on the big screen as the Joker in the Batman sequel The Dark Knight. He recently appeared in I’m Not There as one of six actors who played the musician Bob Dylan. Ledger, who was born in Australia, had been in London last week to shoot Terry Gilliam’s adventure fantasy The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus with Christopher Plummer and Lily Cole in Clerkenwell.

Ledger grew up in Perth and began performing amateur theatre at the age of 10. After moving to Sydney aged 16 to pursue an acting career, he was cast in roles in television films, and was also given guest spots on TV.

The young heart-throb first came to the public’s attention in 1996, when he played a gay cyclist inSnowy Bowles, a little-known Australian soap opera about Olympic hopefuls at the Western Australian Institute of Sport.

Ledger moved to Los Angeles and co-starred in 10 Things I Hate About You, a teen comedy interpretation of The Taming of the Shrew. Although he received offers for other teen films, he turned them down to wait for projects that he wanted. “It wasn’t a hard decision for me,” he said. “It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, ‘You’re crazy,’ my parents were like, ‘Come on, you have to eat’.”

The actor was linked romantically to Naomi Watts, whom he met on the set of Ned Kelly in 2002. But the couple reportedly stopped dating in August 2002. Ang Lee, the director of Brokeback Mountain, hailed Ledger’s performance as a gay cowboy in the film in 2005 as a “miracle”, reminiscent of a young Marlon Brando.

Ledger was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the character Ennis. The Oscar went to Phillip Seymour Hoffman for his portrayal of author Truman Capote in Capote, but Brokeback Mountain won three Academy Awards, including Best Director.

Ledger began a romance with his Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams. The couple, who have a two-year-old daughter, Matilda, split up in September. Talking about his daughter in a recent interview, Ledger said: “I feel good about dying because I feel alive through her.”

The celebrity Website TMZ.com, which broke the news of Ledger’s death, quoted a “confidant” as saying that the actor had suffered from a sustance abuse problem but had been “clean” for a year. A van from the New York Medical Examiner’s Office arrived at the apartment at 421 Broome Street last night to remove the body. A post-mortem examination will be conducted today, but toxicology tests will take at least several days.

On a role

— For his role in Brokeback Mountain, Ledger was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Bafta

— One of his early breaks was in 1999 as the lead in the teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You

— In 2001 he had a starring role in the medieval romp A Knight’s Tale and a more serious part in Oscar-winning prison movie Monster’s Ball

— In 2005 he appeared in the film Casanova and in 2006 as a drug-addicted poet in Candy

Good lord some people really need to get a life. Someone just died for crying out loud...plus, Heath is no fag but played a gay man in a film (I guess what I am saying is nobody deserves to be called a fag).

I detest the "f" word being used anywhere...I have barely used it in my life and consider it just as bad as the N word.

Those religious hypocrites or, as I call them, pseudo Christians, are a bunch of morons who need to let people mourn his death.

^its not really movie related. i mean it is because he was a movie star, but still.

like jamie lynn spears being prego wasnt in primetime tv section, but shes a primetime tv star.

and britneys daily dramas are in the OTL, not the music & movies.

i just always assumed the the movies & music sectionw as to discuss music & movies. and the OTL was more for celeb drama.

but idk.. sometimes son confuses me...

    •   I agree. Colby did a nice job playing against TMG. They had some nice sparring/energy. I think they matched well against each other. CM/Kat looked very pretty today (and really as always) and I agree that Kat is a smart character and I appreciate that.  I am interested in seeing how he plays against Nicole/Leslie. I'm not sure what will end up happening there. Especially considering they are such strong female characters. Maybe he will have chemistry with one or both of them. I hope he has chemistry with at least a couple of people. I would have liked to have kept Maurice, but maybe things will somehow work out with Keith in the role. He really does love them especially Naomi. I think he genuinely believes in her ability as an attorney as well.  He doesn't even get mad when she questions/chastises him, because I think that he thinks that she is capable and smart. I think his love for his children, definitely provides some good depth/balance to his character.
    • Someone called Leslie "LADS" for all the names she has used LMAO
    • @xtr I agree, Bill's love for his children levels out his character. There is something already lovable about him.
    • The new Ted comes off as older to me. His stature and appearance remind me of Vernon but without Vernon's charisma. He doesn't have the presence MJ had. Maybe KR will surprise us in the future but I'm not really invested in Ted as a character anymore.
    • Moving closer to the summer, I hope one of the new sets we get is like a beach house with/ a pool or something outside.
    • I agree that Keith's version of Ted does come across as younger. I thought that Ted's conversation with Kat today was interesting. He painted a picture that no one including the audience has seen before. Leslie behaving like he described why he was initially drawn to her, though of course it doesn't excuse him of hurting/cheating on Nicole. I did like Ted's honesty/vulnerability in his conversation with Kat. I also continue to like Bill's relationship with Naomi. I believe he does genuinely love her and vice versa. Like she stated today he doesn't make it easy for her to love him, but she does. I would like to see them team up one day and be on the same side with something. I think that it's interesting that June doesn't know who the pictures of the two children are. I think it might be an older picture of her and Hayley together as siblings, like some people up here have already suggested. I also wonder what Ted will get Eva for her birthday. And I liked Eva giving it a little to Leslie on today's show when she brought up that people may soon suspect Leslie regarding Laura's accident. Leslie tried to spin it more like it may have been Eva's doing to Kat, but I did like Eva standing her ground and telling Leslie she wouldn't allow herself to be used so that Leslie could get closer to Ted.
    • You make some really good points here. I think Abigail Klein is quite likeable she's just been written as very wishy washy and cookie cutter.   There is nothing that makes her stand out as Patch/Kayla's daughter like you stated. Ron never seemed to have a clear idea what to do with Stephanie or who to pair her with.  I do think it's a fixable problem, but she needs to get away from Alex, IMO.
    • NuTed comes off looking and sounding like a weakling compared to both Nicole and Leslie. Smh.
