Gwen Ifill Responds To "Very Conservative Folks" On Oprah: "I Haven't Even Written The Barack Obama Chapter Yet"

Huffington Post

Gwen Ifill appeared on "Oprah" Friday to debrief following Thursday night's Vice Presidential debate, which she moderated. Oprah asked Ifill about the drama surrounding her upcoming book on black political leaders that is slated to come out around Inauguration Day, a fact conservatives used Wednesday to question whether she was an appropriate debate moderator.

"I'm happy to set the record straight," Ifill told Oprah.

Ifill said "a lot of very conservative folks decided...that this was a 'pro-Obama book' and I was 'hopelessly conflicted.' Well, as I pointed out to them...I haven't even written the Barack Obama chapter yet."

Her full comments:

I've been working in blessed obscurity on this book for some time, except I've written about it for
Time
magazine, I've written about it for
Essence
magazine, it's been written about in
Vogue
, but for some reason, the day before the debate, all of a sudden it became a subject of some drama because a lot of very conservative folks decided — mind you, once again, the day before the debate — that this was a "pro-Obama book" and I was "hopelessly conflicted." Well, as I pointed out to them, to those who wanted to listen anyway: I haven't even written the Barack Obama chapter yet because no one knows how it's going to end.

So my publisher is happy that we actually got a chance to talk about the book, but everybody who's known me and known the kind of work I've done for 30 years in journalism,
I got a lot of support, including from folks in the McCain campaign, who called me and said, "This isn't fair, we know you, we know that you're a straight-ahead reporter."
And my thing was, watch the debate on Thursday night and decide if I'm fair or not and I think people can say I was fair.

Things have taken a turn because now I have the Dukes of Hazzard theme song in my head.

:lol::lol: You are still the bomb, my friend.

So her feelings were hurt because she couldn't answer a damn question?

Oy vey.

This queen is too much. So they didn't ask her the questions she wanted to hear? How biased of them! To think that we would actually like to hear her position on the issues or her experience? This world is so unfair.

Add this to the long list of questionable behavior from Obama that will be ignored by his supporters and the MSM..

Oh GMAMFB. What is this "long line of questionable behavior"???? I'm still twiddling my thumbs waiting for this "October Surprise" that was alluded to a few weeks ago....

And is that surprising to anyone?

People ignore things about every person that has been elected to office so why shouldn't Obama supporters do the same thing for him?

He hasn't been indicted. He hasn't been convicted of anything and there is no reason for him to be held to a higher standard than any other candidate.

Everyone should be held to a high standard period.

A legend in my own mind. You rock!!!

What is this "long line of questionable behavior"????

I didn't even want to touch that :lol::lol:

They do know how to get those emails flowing. I am so glad I'm not on any party's mailing list.....I couldn't do it.

I like KO's term "Fixed Noise" but that is the same as "Faux News."

Uhmm GGL....while you're waiting:

It's Official: GOP Ticket Now "Winky and Wrinkly"

Jane Hamsher

Sarah Palin proved last night she's more qualified to host a game show than be Vice President of the United States.

She looked directly into the camera and delivered one canned line after another with nary an "um" or an "uh," but her complete inability to do anything other than insert prepared speeches into more or less appropriate places became clear when Gwen Ifill asked the candidates about their personal limitations:

IFILL

: Let's talk conventional wisdom for a moment. The conventional wisdom, Gov. Palin with you, is that your Achilles heel is that you lack experience. Your conventional wisdom against you is that your Achilles heel is that you lack discipline, Sen. Biden. What id it really for you, Gov. Palin? What is it really for you, Sen. Biden? Start with you, governor.

PALIN

: My experience as an executive will be put to good use as a mayor and business owner and oil and gas regulator and then as governor of a huge state, a huge energy producing state that is accounting for much progress towards getting our nation energy independence and that's extremely important.

But it wasn't just that experience tapped into, it was my connection to the heartland of America. Being a mom, one very concerned about a son in the war, about a special needs child, about kids heading off to college, how are we going to pay those tuition bills? About times and Todd and our marriage in our past where we didn't have health insurance and we know what other Americans are going through as they sit around the kitchen table and try to figure out how are they going to pay out-of-pocket for health care? We've been there also so that connection was important.

But even more important is that world view that I share with John McCain. That world view that says that America is a nation of exceptionalism. And we are to be that shining city on a hill, as President Reagan so beautifully said, that we are a beacon of hope and that we are unapologetic here. We are not perfect as a nation. But together, we represent a perfect ideal. And that is democracy and tolerance and freedom and equal rights. Those things that we stand for that can be put to good use as a force for good in this world.

John McCain and I share that. You combine all that with being a team with the only track record of making a really, a difference in where we've been and reforming, that's a good team, it's a good ticket.

IFILL

: Senator?

BIDEN

: You're very kind suggesting my only Achilles Heel is my lack of discipline.

Others talk about my excessive passion. I'm not going to change. I have 35 years in public office. People can judge who I am. I haven't changed in that time.

She does not know what "achilles heel" means. Watch it. She Does. Not. Know. What. It.Means.

Forget the tight stripper skirt, forget the metallic eyeshadow inappropriate for anyone over the age of 40, forget the cloying sitcom delivery, the lies, the cruel and calculated needling of Biden by calling his college professor wife a "school teacher" and saying "she'll get her reward in Heaven" (to a man whose first wife died in a car accident) -- she's an idiot.

I cannot believe that we are seriously thinking of placing this dodo bird within reach of the Presidency.

Oh and while you're waiting GGL, let's put together a petition to get people in trouble based on their associations that way we can have less people walking around freely in society and more perks for ourselves....well this might need a lot of work but we have all month at least.

You can't be serious. First of all, the Rev. Wright should not be on that "list" because your own VP candidate isn't supposed to be questioned on her church, remember? Do you really want to open that can of worms?

Secondly, it has been proven in this very thread that your candidate has more ties to Frannie and Freddie Mac than Obama does. Are you seriously using that as an argument?

Lastly, I just have one word for you.... Troopergate.

Oh, and I don't recall a response to the death penalty issue.....

Wow you amaze me. I know you can't "read" emotions, but I get the feeling you are anxiously and gleefully awaiting a "surprise" that is character based. If you don't like someone's policies, that's fine. But this negattive character stuff, I don't know. We all have people and relationships in our past that reeked of bad judgement. Even your boy McCain, Keating 5, womanizing, cheating on his first wife,. Heck Davis is/was on Fannies payroll just recently. I think that we grow and learn from our past mistakes. At least afford someone that.

I could be wrong about this. I hope so. But you seem too invested in this "October Surprise" stuff.

Lowell ‘Bud’ Paxson

The Keating Five

And those took about 5 minutes to find, so do we really want to play this stupid-ass game that each of them should be held up by the people they said hi to years ago?

Before I sign off for the night, I just want to say something that's been on my mind the last few days.

As far as politics go, I tend to err on the side of what's best for the common good, for humanity. What I feel is the best for all of us, rather than saving a few bucks on taxes (which seem to be the Repub's biggest argument, although it rings hollow for me).

That is why I am supporting Barack Obama. And I'm very proud of that fact.

It may seem simplistic to some, or non-sensical to others, but that's JMHO. The arguments presented thus far in this thread and in the MSM have not persuaded me one iota that John McCain has the interests of the greater good of the American people in his heart, whereas Obama has given me that impression. Not only through his speeches, but in his proposals if he were elected president.

When all is said and done, what will be McCain's tagline if elected? I believe that it will be this. We may have a decimated Middle Class, but at least Big Business has tax breaks and Roe V. Wade has been overturned. What an accomplishment. <_<<_<
