Why are the psychopaths so fun to watch, that is my question?

You know people who are crazy in real life is both sad, chocking and very horrible. But on the soaps they are almost funniest to watch, what would any soap be without psychopaths like-

All My Children- Janet

As The World Turns- Barbara (when she where crazy)

Days of our Lives- Ali

Eastenders- Stella

Coronation Street- Richard, Tracy

General Hospital- Heather, Helena

One Life To Live- Niki, Margaret

Bold and the beautiful- Sheila, THE woman who pretended to be Angela Forrester, Morgan

Emmerdale- Steph

Passions-Norma

Guding Light- Carmen, Annie

Young and the Restless- Sheila, Mari Joe.

The Psychos are funny, but why are they so fun???????????????................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...........

I don't find psycopaths in today's writing funny or interesting at all.

Back in the day, once revealed, a psycho would not last as long as they do now. It's ridiculous that "writers" are "writing" such depravity and shilling it as a story.

Psychos usually last up to 6 months... Now they are the center of many of the shows.

Pathetic!

I think it depends on who is playing the psycho and whether there's some decent writing behind his/her character. On EastEnders, Sophie Thompson is doing a bang-up job playing Stella. She creeps me out and I despise what she's doing to Ben, yet I can't help but watch her. And the woman who plays May (or played because I haven't seen her leave town yet), she's also keeping me glued with her madness. On the flipside, psychos can become boring really fast if the acting and writing isn't there. I think about the Alex North storyline on Days. He was a psycho but he also wasn't very interesting or intriguing either. I FF'd through all of his scenes, which I found repetitive.

Psychos are a big reason of why I watch soaps, as you can see with my name lol.

You want to get me into a soap? Show me a psychotic character and I'll fall in love! Granted, my heart is usually broken when the character is eventually written off (Margaret, Jan, Helena, etc.) but I'll always cherish the memories they give.

I love the vulnerability...the determination....what MAKES them crack. They're just amazing and entertaining. I wouldn't mind if EVERY soap had one all the time.

Psychopaths keep the story moving along. We can't watch soap characters be happy all of the time. Plus, they didn't automatically turn bad. They have feelings, motivations, and a past to reveal why they do what they do.

Look at what Sheila Carter did for B&B back in the 90's, she made this show because as far as she could go, there was no stopping her! Until 2002 came and she shoots someone but back in the day she would've gotten out of it!

    • I admit...I too thought of Penny and Good Times at that ending with SilkPress.
    • Yes, just so.  Thanks for the info. I could tell this was going to be a big thing with ShawnD in this danger! Especially love that the little guy is Andrew!
    • I think the shocker would be if he's NOT playing Dumas. That's where Josh Griffith plays most of his stories. Now they have Cole "self-isolating" because they don't want to put up that hospital set. Will Cole cough himself to death at the GCAC? What a "storyline." I can't believe how much JG is playing with us regarding Nick and Sharon. The teasing has become pathetic, especially for Shick fans who want them back together. My guess is that he'll reveal his real name once he is exposed.
    • Maybe we'll meet Leslie's mama who'll be a former Articulette and they'll build the rival family from there that a lot of people seem to think is missing. It'd make sense considering Anita's been hammering on about going on tour and reviving her music career.
    • hahaha at the Brennan shade.   But even I saw this and have to agree. What's really sad is that some of the person on that list could easily have a love interest that is on the canvas. They just need to be written for.
    • The thought has crossed my mind. Tricia Mann-Grant did say in her EW interview w/ MVJ and DD, that Leslie wants to be a Dupree just as bad as she wants Eva to be. I believe now that's the direction they are going in, that maybe she is just obsessed with the family. I could be wrong though.
    • True. But I have always had mixed feelings about that twist. Since I love the Damian storyline which already had twists and turns. Also I could not wait for a new powerful AND BLACK businessman to mix it up at some point with Victor. It just seem like another twist that was added on for twist sake. And also for a character (whether I love him or not) to hijack a new and refreshing storyline so they can be propped.    Once good thing that I can say about JG is that he loves to keep the Abbotts in rotation. So I could see that happening with Diane. I don't think she has mentioned her backstory, either. I would be intrigued.
    • That's how I feel. Beats could have been played for the past couple months wherein Dante and Gio interacted and had a difference of opinion -- or something. I don't know. I do know that this crushing rant that blames everything on Gio is absurd. -- Reading over all the comments here about characters and couples, it's kind of amazing that we have any show left considering the number of times actors and writers and execs were given influence to make major character and story decisions. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
