Variety: PASSIONS Heads to DirecTv

'Passions' heads to DirecTV

Segments to begin airing this fall

By JOSEF ADALIANNBC is closing in on a deal that will keep sudser "Passions" alive via an unusual outlet: DirecTV.

In what would be its biggest-ever original programming initiative, satellite provider is set to acquire original episodes of the soap opera from NBC U TV Studio. Segs would likely begin airing this fall, after the sudser ends its run on NBC.

There will be some changes, however.

Instead of five days per week, "Passions" will air only four times per week. It's also expected the show's budget will be reduced further to accommodate the different business model.

Neither NBC nor DirecTV would comment, but insiders said a deal could be finalized by week's end. It's unclear how much DirecTV will pay NBC, but a typical sudser costs a little more than $1 million per week to produce for network TV.

DirecTV has been edging further into the original content business, airing several first-run skeins on what it calls the 101. It's unclear if the company will program "Passions" on that channel or use the sudser as part of a larger programming initiative.

Peacock said earlier this year that it was canceling "Passions" after an eight-year run on the net (Daily Variety, Jan. 15).

There are several non-Youtube sites that have full episodes of Passions now. It should not be hard to be able to watch the episodes after the switch.

I hope these non-YouTube sites are streaming video where I don't have to download anything to my computer.

And I hope that AND the exact opposite, so I can download DVD-quality eps to my computer and cherish my favorite ones FOREVER!!!

(I am, also, thinking about the switch -- but I have until September to do that. :))

For the fans who like their high speed Internet with their cable company...

You can have both DIRECTV and high speed Internet from your cable company. Lots of people do it and they are not "Passions" fans.

Bad News for Canadian Fans... :(

According to TV Guide Canada...Global TV will NOT be airing Passions after it's run on NBC. They will not be picking up the new episodes that will air on DIRECTV.

So basically at this time there is not a new home for Passions. Perhaps down the road another network in Canada will pick up the new episodes that will air on DIRECTV.

PASSIONS moving to DirecTV - Frequently Asked Questions

As previously announced, PASSIONS ends its run on NBC on September 7, 2007, but will resume broadcasting on DirecTV on September 17, 2007. Here are some answers to your initial questions:

Q) I want to make the switch to DIRECTV so I don't miss a single episode of "Passions." What do I do?

A) DIRECTV will make it easy for Passions viewers to keep track of the happenings in "Harmony" by providing fans free installation, a DVR or HD receiver upgrade, and a portable DVD player by calling a special phone number (866-788-0003) or visiting the Web (www.directv.com/passions) that will give those without DIRECTV plenty of time to switch before the new season begins.

Q) I can't get DIRECTV. Will I still be able to watch "Passions" episodes online or on iTunes?

A) No, "Passions" will only be available exclusively on DIRECTV's Channel 101.

Q) Will the current message board still remain active?

A) Yes - www.nbc.com/passions will continue to be the center of the official "Passions" online community. Look for enhanced features and new content soon!

Q) Will my favorite characters still be on the show?

A) We hope to have all of our "Passions" cast and crew remain as the show moves to DIRECTV. We'll know for sure in the next several weeks, and will keep you updated!

YouTube sucks, Kenny, only because soap fans (and you know this, I think, based on past posts) LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to keep their favorite episodes. And watch them over. On TV. Not on the Internet in pixelated form. I have a whole library of favorite "Passions" episodes on tape and I'll soon cave (one day) and get a DVR so I can record the final episodes on that, for best quality. You can't do that on YouTube.

So, again, YouTube sucks! :(

My only option, as I see it, is torrent.

You can save Youtube clips. As you said it probably wont be the best quality (but that really depends on how good the person capping the episodes is, and if this person is willing to make larger files per episode). But still, you can save them on Youtube.

A possible solution for most Passions fans and DIRECTV...Please Read!

I was checking out the DIRECTV website and I notice that they have a bunch of satellite receivers that you can use with your car, SUV, boat, RV, etc. Also, they have satellite receivers that are portable that you can use to go camping with or you can even use it in your house.

Now this may not be a solution for most but, I'm sure it will be a solution for some especially for people who are not property owners and can't install a satellite dish on top of the house or apartment building.

One product that I think is very cool and innovative is the portable satellite receiver that you can use for camping or even inside your house. This portable satellite receiver has a built-in 17 inch LCD screen and it's called DirecTV Sat Go.

Here is the website address about different types of satellite receivers that are very non-traditional...

Fellow Canadians!! We need to band together to find Passions a new home!!

I think it would succeed on MuchMusic, City TV, Space, or some other specialty channels. I can't see it going to CBC or CTV. Come on y'all, let's think of something!!!

How so?

It just is. I mean, is there any OTHER show on another television network that has an NBC.com/ "whatever" domain? I don't THANK so!

I might add: Keeping the NBC.com site likely would give the show more Web exposure (homepage wise) than the DirecTV site it may have. And then it could drive more clueless viewers to DirecTV. (We all know some TRULY ignorant people who don't know how TV works, and still won't get that even though they heard a show was "canceled," and they saw something advertised on TV as the final episode on NBC, they just don't GET that it really will live on.)

^Hell, related to that, I remember, back in high school, when some STUPID girl I chatted about NYPD Blue with, INSISTED that it was about to air its last episode EVER -- all because the promo said "SEASON finale."

You can't IMAGINE the string of vulgarities I thought up, when looking at that psychopath, acting like she was hot [!@#$%^&*] for knowing something I didn't! "Um, NOYADIDN'T, YOU'RE wrong, and you can go STRAIGHT to hell!" I thought to myself.
