DAYS: This is a great time to bring back an original cast member

With Alice and Mickey, DAYS' last remaining original cast members, off the show, it would be nice if at least one of the original Hortons returned.

The only original Horton (actor and character) still alive is Marie, played by Maree Cheatham. And bringing her back to the show, at least on a recurring basis, wouldn't be too far-fetched because her grandson Nick is engrossed in major story. She could come back to offer her grandson sound advice, and perhaps take an interest in his love life. Would she approve of Chelsea?

Marie could fill the void left by Alice and Mickey. With Maggie, Doug, and Julie on the show, she has veteran characters to interact with, as well as newbies like Nick.

DAYS should be making a play for Marie. Imagine the buzz they could create if they brought back an original cast member!

BTW: Maree last appeared on daytime in 2002 as Mona on Passions.

Wow, as soon as I read the title of this thread, I too thought of Maree Cheatham as Marie. She has held up well over the years and has that warm, maternal vibe. I think it'd be a great idea to bring a Horton child back and Marie makes perfect sense.

Definitely.

I didn't really realize how likeable and interesting Marie was until I saw her in the first episode of the show when it was broadcast on SoapNet. I looked her up, and realized that I recognized the actress from other roles (when she was older). Now, I'd love to have her back!

Yeah, I thought we were supposed to get this great Horton replenishment? Looks like the DiMeras came first.

Next Christmas, for the tree-trimming episode we'll only see the tree with an empty Horton living room.

I think it's just the whole idea of expectation, people expected more from the head writer change, and this whole thing about being off of NBC in 2009 casts a formidable shadow.

But I do think there is reason to be skeptical about the investment in Hortons, that family hasn't really been done well by in a while. They had some nice Christmases for sure but there's really no anchor for Salem's first family. In the 90s there was Jennifer and Mike, now Jennifer is gone and Mike is MIA. Abby is leaving, Nick is here and Jeremy is around but teens and tweens need to be connected to properly be able to assume the reigns. Maggie is a supporting character and they don't seem eager to give her an actual storyline. Hope is never really used in her Horton capacity, people think of her pretty much as a Brady now (I cooked up this storyline once where they can show Hope assuming some of the Horton administrative responsibilities at the hospital, that way they can show her checking in on Ciara at the nursery or daycare there and she wouldn't be called a bad mom, she'd get her scenes with her baby and also be doing something ... and then somebody could start undermining her there ... anyway). There is a lot of doom and gloom surrounding Alice and they are content to let Doug and Julie just guest now and then.

I don't mean to be a downer, but the Hortons is one area that I am not hopeful. I'd love to be wrong!

Marie better come back for Alice's eventual funeral. If they ignore that then I'll hit the roof.

I totally agree with Rion though. I think it'd serve DAYS well to get Cheatham back and have Marie, sadly, take over Alice's spot :( :(

I can't believe I'm even writing that. God, I'm tearing up.

Absolutely. And what's most fleeting about it is that Hogan Sheffer himself said that he was going to replenish the Horton family. Thus far, that hasn't happened... and there's no point in bringing on people like Nick and Jeremy if their parents 'n such aren't around to thusly connect them.

The Horton family are now the guest stars of the show that was once theirs, and it's sad.

I'd prefer Maggie to take over Alice's spot, rather than Marie. The simple fact of it is, she's been around all this time while Marie hasn't. Viewers are more attached to her, so she's the more logical choice, IMO.

    • Well, Claire did rig Rick's test results, but it was to flunk. They actually managed to get his correct results back after they were thrown into Cedar's furnace...I think? Everyone knew Claire changed them and Rick passed so that rewrite never made sense.   I agree. Pratt always seems "edgy" on screen (and her Locker Room interview prooved that it came from her personality.) I liked Claire causeing trouble and love Meta ringing her beads. Its just too bad that Abby left and they kinda just forgot Claire existed.
    • Oh so they did sleep together. The retcon was just the medical boards? That makes sense. I think Susan Pratt, while a good actress, was just an unlikeable presence onscreen and soaps wrote to that most of the time. There was some potential for more with her when she returned in that stint, as Pratt was at least interesting to watch and caused some conflict for the stifled Bauers. Instead of pairing her with Alan and then disappearing I might have had her hook up with Danny. I think there was a lot of flirtation with Bolger's Philip, but they never crossed the line.
    • I haven't seen Melchior in the role, but it would be astounding if she's worse than Linn. Her rivalry with Stephanie was sidelined IMO because Linn was one of the few actors who didn't have chemistry with, nor raise her game, when paired with Susan Flannery. To be fair, she did show some signs of life in scenes opposite Darlene Connelly, but way too little too late. It feels like Bell finally woke up after the Thorne switchover and sidelined the Kristin character with Mick to 1 or 2 appearances a week. As a result, the show improved by leaps and bounds after she was inexplicably at the center of the show for most of 1989. Margo is so much more enjoyable when not tied to that albatross. Even Clarke is watchable with less Kristin interaction. She can't exit stage left soon enough. As for the new Thorne, I agree that Norcross feels like a Forrester a lot more than Thrachta, even if the latter is a better actor.
    • The cast said that scenes were filmed over a few weeks, with a preplanned hiatus in the middle, and it was all out of order.  I would *guess* that they used Chandler when they could get him? They also had to work around Leo Howard getting married around the time these episodes were filmed, but I guess they worked it out since Tate appeared.
    • Maybe there was a scheduling conflict or something. He still has the full time 9-5 in Atlanta, right? Julie was there. Idk if Maggie’s gonna be a part of it though
    • At this point, the best nonpaywall coverage of Los Angeles (and anything political)  is in...the Tennessee Holler https://bsky.app/profile/thetnholler.bsky.social And as always, emptywheel continues to be consistent https://bsky.app/profile/emptywheel.bsky.social
    • Today Monday was the start of people arriving at the funeral, but the service hasn't started yet.  I know this is the nonspoiler thread but I think it's okay to say (in nonspecific terms) that the funeral episodes span a few days.  I won't detail it more here. Just sayin' keep watching.
    • Why am I only now hearing about what happened in L.A., lol?
    • While I agree that Reeves is Jennifer, I honestly do prefer Cady McClain in the role, as I feel she had/has a wider range of acting capabilities than I feel Reeves has. It's the strength of an actor, ultimately, for me, regardless of how I feel about Reeves' political/social views (which I widely disagree with). Plus, not to mention, they costumed Reeves like an old-fashioned frumpy farm/Moron wife, while McClain had some fashion-forward moments.
    • Wait - so no Will, Jack, or Jen at John's funeral? That’s just weird. What was the point of bringing them back then? Did Julie and Maggie even show up? I mean, seriously.
