When the Bradys were added to the show in the '80s, they were anchored to the Hortons. We were told that the two families had been friends for years; we just hadn't seen the Bradys on camera.

Roman and Kayla were around, and Shawn and Caroline popped in and out. Then Bo was introduced. It was some time later before we met Kimberly.

Roman had interaction with the Hortons and Marlena, and his relationship with Marlena took time. Bo and Hope were introduced rather slowly, and it took time for these two to get it together. Meanwhile, Doug and Julie were being edged out.

Even Marlena, when she was a new character, was introduced with strong ties to the others and given story development slowly. First she was Mickey's doctor, then she was a new doctor working with Tom and the gang, then she was dating Don, then she was friends with the Hortons, etc.

These days, the families are thrown together and relationships formed so quickly, and every new face has a mysterious past and evil plans for the Salemites. And, ultimately, they all work for Stefano or his offspring.

When they introduced new characters in the past, when they developed stories in the past, they did it SO WELL. Perhaps our society is too fast-paced to sit still for that long and allow for that buildup anymore, but something has happened to the storytelling on DAYS. Until the storytelling can be fixed, I don't think it would even matter who's on the screen.
