The N Greenlights the Third Season of the Critically Acclaimed Teen Drama South of Nowhere From The Tom Lynch Company

The GLAAD Award-Nominated Program for Best Drama Series Resumes Production in Los Angeles This Spring on 16 New, Original Episodes Slated to Premiere Fall 2007

NEW YORK, Feb. 16 -- The critically acclaimed teen drama, South of Nowhere will return for a third season on The N, the nighttime network for teens, it was announced today by Sarah Tomassi Lindman, SVP and General Manager, The N. The series which was recently nominated for its second GLAAD Award in the category of Best Drama Series explores one family's journey of honesty and self-discovery in the fast-paced City of Angels. This spring, production will begin on 16 new original 30-minute episodes from The Tom Lynch Co. that are slated to premiere Fall of 2007.

"We are proud to begin production on a series that continues to be applauded by both our teen viewers and an esteemed organization such as GLAAD," said Lindman. "We have created an authentic teen series that speaks to our audience with honesty and acceptance."

South of Nowhere is a fictional story about a contemporary American family and their multi-faceted journey of self-discovery. Set in Los Angeles, the series chronicles the five members of the Carlin family as they try to define themselves and make sense of their lives while they undergo a huge transition -- moving from a small town in Ohio to the big city of Los Angeles. The Carlins find they are unprepared for the fast-paced, metropolitan environment and the overcrowded, "anything goes" L.A. public school the family's three teenagers attend. The family is at the heart of the series and while their characters are unique, they reflect many American families today -- bound by their evolving identity and their close relationships.

I really don't think you should have to self-identify as a spokesmodel to play gay, but if you're an actor with no love for the homos, maybe you don't want to sign up for a show where the main storyline is about a teenage girl falling for her female best friend.

But on Wednesday night, at a roundtable for youth-focused media and marketing pros hosted by Ypulse.com, The N's Dixie Feldman slipped and said that's exactly what happened on their teen soap South of Nowhere.

To be clear -- Feldman echoed what the exec in charge of the show, Matt Welton, told me last month about Viacom's tween cable network: Everyone in charge, from their parent company on down, has generally been very supportive of the gay story. Welton happily named off a half-dozen high-ranking queer execs and writers on South of Nowhere, including himself, and the show is without doubt groundbreaking (and, I admit it, totally addictive and adorable).

But Feldman, The N's editorial director, also revealed that one actor on the show felt that the positive portrayal of coming out -- and the decidedly less positive picture painted by a conservative Christian mom who tries de-gay her dykey daughter -- was "morally wrong." So, said Feldman, the actor asked to leave the show. (An "edited" version of the discussion will eventually be pod- and videocast at Ypulse.)

No names were named, but there's been one leading cast member conspicuously absent both from the many gay award shows where the soap has been lauded and the PSA for GLAAD that plays frequently on The N: Danso Gordon, who plays Clay Carlin, sweet girl Spencer's adopted brother. (There are a couple actors playing smaller roles who aren't making the rounds, either.) But I love Clay and have often credited his nuanced performance! Say it isn't so!

The season ended with a bang, literally, when a drive-by shooting interrupted post-Prom coitus, and the question of who's been hit won't be resolved until next season. A call to the network yesterday yielded a frantic "I'm not even sure that's true!" followed by a promise to get back to me by the end of the day followed by...nothing. At least not yet.

The last episode I saw was when Spencer and Ashley ran away and when their car broke down they had to call Spencer's dad. The N hasn't been rerunning it, so I never got to catch up

yes MQ is still on it and turning in the performace of her lifetime, IMHO. her role is so good. she plays the mom of the daughter who coems out and starts dating another girl, and her moms not happy at all about it.

the show is simply amazing and im so glad that we have a network the th-n that is willing to go there and show it and show all sides of it, but it is ultimatly (sp?) a positve showing of a teenage lesbian. im shure that means a lot to lesbians out there - young and old.
