  1. oh wow. I didn't even know they were going on, lol.

Happy for Mao. Her FS at the Olympics was one of the best I have ever seen. Glad she got SOMETHING this year.

Also glad to see Javier on the podium for the men. I thought he deserved to be at the Olympics as well, but maybe I was just, uh, distracted biggrin.png

  2. If it were just Crimea, then it wouldn't be worth a major war over. But the thing is that Putin could have Hitler-esque potential (which Hillary seemed to allude to when she compared Russia to Nazi Germany). Once Putin seizes Crimea (which seems inevitable at this point unless troops are sent), he probably won't be appeased, but instead will want more and more. If he acquires too much of an empire, the result could be World War III. And, of course, far more bloodshed would happen then as opposed to a war in Crimea that would take place today.

But yes, I understand that mostly because of Iraq (and also Afghanistan to a lesser extent), the public wants no troops in Crimea. Yet just because a preemptive war was a mistake once doesn't always make it the case.

The thing is, Iraq was a country we would 100% win a war against with. War against Russia is different. We could beat them, but it would be costlier and bloodier and not limited to just Crimea. Plus, Russia has nukes.

Mutually Assured Destruction has kept the U.S. and Russia out of war since the 50s. Putin knows which countries are sacred cows and which he is not allowed to attack. Now it's time for the U.S. to afford him the similar respect and stop expanding NATO east. tbh NATO should not even exist anymore.

  3. Ashley Wagner got ridiculously low scores. She completely blew away that free skate. She wouldn't have won a medal, but she certainly shouldn't have finished lower than 5th. I'm glad that she called the judges out on the absurdity of her scores. I hope the matter gets some coverage, because the scoring system is broke and the judges cannot be completely trusted. I am remembering the 2002 Olympics and a Canadian ice dancing team that lost out to a Russian team, in spite of a clearly superior performance.

Ashley is getting a lot of [!@#$%^&*] for what she is saying but I am loving her outspokenness as well. That's what people do not get -- she is not asking to have medalled. She knew going into this that she was a huge longshot for a medal. But when ladies who fell were placed above her, that's bizarre. And it wasn't just Ashley who was screwed by the judging. Kim Yuna and Carolina Kostner should have been our gold and silver medalists, respectively.

If they are going to keep rigging, just bring back the 6.0 system already. There was no need to invent this elaborate new judging system that makes things less fun if you are going to keep rigging anyway. Or, just stop rigging and make the judges' scores public knowledge as Ashley logically asked for.

  4. The NBC commentary was borderline annoying throughout the whole Olympics. I preferred Lipinski and Weir's commentating at NBC SN over the main NBC broadcast.

Oh, absolutely. I was shocked that Sandra Bezic threw shade on Kim Yuna's silver though. Usually their job is to convince the audience how righteous the judging is, but she kind of called out the bullshit that occurred there.

  5. Even with the higher technical content, there is no way she should have won; She really should have been in third.

Agreed. Outskated by not only Yuna Kim, but also Carolina Kostner (who would have been happy with any medal, and I am thrilled for her).

Yuna Kim will always be the real winner in my heart. But the judges decided they wanted the "upset" storyline, so that is what happened, whether deserved or not.

Of course the real highlight of this Free Skate was Mao Asada. Best performance of the night, and one of the most legendary of all time. She knew she had no chance at a medal and she still did the best free skate of her career. Just heartbreaking.

  6. There was a big controversy this year as Ashley Wagner failed to make the top 3 at US Nationals and was awarded a spot at the olympics anyway. A lot of people think it was racist since Mirai Nagasu placed 3rd but is not being sent.

I am not sure what to think, but I hate that Ashley has gotten so much hate when she was not the one who made the decision. Poor girl had to shut down all her social media.

  7. I really wanted to like it but found it meh. It's not terrible but it's not compelling either. So far, one of the lesser HBO offerings for sure.

Agreed. I wanted to like it but it is too boring.

How come True Blood and Game of Thrones are softcore porn and "the gay show" is so boring. Like, shouldn't it be the other way around?

  8. And this is the type of silly nonsense that makes me reluctant to identify with either party.

    http://www.politico.com/story/2014/01/dems-hit-golden-globe-e-cigarettes-102215.html?hp=r6

I don't think it is silly nonsense. THere has not been enough research on e-cigs. They are advertised as safer than traditional cigarettes but there is no proof of that. They are not regulated by any entity. There is an epidemic of teenagers using them.

I am personally a smoker but I get this.

  9. If Britney wants to come back from this, she will come back. It all depends on her. She will not try to come back and fail at it. She will either take a break for a while after Vegas is over or she will stage a successful comeback.

  10. I don't miss Stabler. I liked him at the time and I love Chris Meloni but Stabler's story was done and I think they have done a good job re-inventing the show since he left. There are hundreds of Stabler-era reruns to watch, so it's no biggie if I want to see a Stabler episode. I hope they will bring him back if/when the series finale comes, which hopefully is not for a while, but honestly I don't feel like there is a missing piece when I tune in to the new eppys.

A big aspect in re-inventing the show has been the new ADA Barba. Love him. We haven't had a stable ADA since Casey got disbarred like 6 seasons ago. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Christine Lahti guest stint and when they would bring back Alex/Casey as needed but the "Order" aspect of this show has been suffering for years and Barba has definitely brought it back.

Benson doesn't bother me any. I actually like her more as the seasons go on. The way she always always believes the victim no matter what is just her signature trait and so needed on a show like this, and that they have kept that aspect of her character consistent for 15 seasons is amazing to me.

I like Rollins a lot actually, she is a good detective but she definitely has a dark side. To me Amaro is the weakest link. He is just so bland I really can't with him.

  11. What do you guys think of the Dean Winters character?

I really can't take him seriously at all and I think he is tame as a love interest for Olivia. I think they forgot that they wrote him out after season 1 for a reason.

I am sad about Dann Florek. That means Mariska is the last OG cast member left sad.png

  12. Christie has really disappointed me. I thought he was a different Republican, but the George Washington Bridge scandal paints him in an extremely ugly light. He is willing to use the government to settle personal scores. Just what we need, another Nixon.

  13. The problem with Femme Fatale is that the songs are all too similar. I prefer Club Britney to Pop Britney, I actually really don't even listen to her first 3 albums anymore even though I loved them once upon at time. But Blackout is just the best Club Britney album. So many experimental songs with WTF different sound effects and synths and beats. Plus Blackout was just so unexpected.

  14. The Democrats, even with a successful ACA rollout, were never going to capture the House in 2014. That was like fanfiction. Gaining a couple House seats would be a huge coup. Keeping the Senate would be a huge coup. Taking back the House was not going to happen, ever. It would be unprecedented.

It all matters so little. I post on politics message boards, and the conservatives keep coming at us like we are on the defensive with the ACA. But the hardcore liberal base never supported the ACA to begin with. To me, this is our transition to single-payer. We must keep it for now, but it doesn't mean I like it.

  15. I wonder if CBS saw where they were going and made them back off. It has been said many times that ABC was the instigator of making Steven "Less Gay" on Dynasty, It was just a matter of Esther knuckling under to pressure, and they lost Al Corley because of it. He saw the role as his chance to make television history, and when they wanted to water the character down, he wanted none of it. I think the chemistry between Laura and Ciji was VERY palpable, Connie and Lisa played that element to perfection.

Some of the interviews that have been done with the cast and crew seem to indicate that they weren't really going anywhere with the lesbian thing, it was just Richard being Richard.

  16. I'm not all that sure why people assume Christie will get out of the primaries.

The media worships him, they love that he hates the right people and verbally abuses for kicks - it makes them feel warm and squishy inside. It's their "strong father" fetish. But the media does not control GOP primaries.

I don't really know about Hillary. 2008 taught me not to bet on a sure thing.

The primaries on the Republican side seem to just be a side show. "The party chooses" the candidate. They chose Bush, McCain, and they chose Romney, and they ended up being the nominees even with wingnuts going crazy over it.

The media do not control the GOP primaries, but if the establishment chooses Christie, he will have the same inevitable march Romney and McCain had.

  17. I actually have to echo most of what Max said on this page. Hillary is a great elder stateswoman, she is a brilliant mind, she had played the game (she voted for the Iraq War for god's sake and supported the troop surge) but she is not a brilliant politician. She cannot sell [!@#$%^&*] with a smile the way Bill could.
