Someone on Soapcentral posed a theory regarding the spoilers about Nikki and the Newman family. They speculated that maybe it will be revealed that Nikki was the one who really killed Delia and that is why her world will be turned upside down. And that could be the thing that changes the dynamic in the Newman family. Though, I don't know if the show would do that.

    ROTFL!

I'm gonna pause my 1991 watch to view those 1986 episodes! Thanks again!!! Right now I'm in November 1991 and I'm convinced this HAS to be one of the Top Five years in Y&R history. Such a transformative year and so much has been done to integrate these new characters into the canvas without sacrificing the existing characters.

One key thing that stuns me is just how unbelievably good Victoria Rowell is. She doesn't get the credit she deserves for just what she did here. Bill Bell and Victoria Rowell are a FORCE together. You can tell he is loving writing for her! Something as simple as her getting a $50 raise on her paycheck was such a great character building moment and something that could never work the way writers write soaps today. She can literally do ANYTHING. Now after a chance meeting, she's become friends with Cricket and is interested in becoming a model. Having her interact and develop a REAL friendship with Cricket and Danny is just expanding her character even more. It's amazing seeing how well integrated the black characters are! She brings 110% to any scene given and no matter how slow an episode may be, if you see her you know it'll be worth watching.

Another heavy hitter is Nikki's alcoholism which has developed nicely over the year. She has left the ranch maybe twice this year, but it serves a purpose. I also love how they randomly have her in two or three outfits in one day even though she never leaves her home. There are so many subtle, but bizarre things that she's doing and MTS is knocking it out of the park finding different ways to hide her problem from her various family members and Miguel. It's getting to a critical point where Jack is reaching his breaking point and it's a real breakthrough for Peter Bergman as Jack. Also in the Newman household you have 16 year old Victoria losing her virginity after Ryan pressured her into sex. I love that they're actually developing the emotional impact of this and how she truly wasn't ready. And they're even allowing her and Ashley to confront Ryan about his actions. It's a simple story on paper, but the execution is doing so much to continue developing the character of Victoria. In general, most of Bill Bell's plots are very simple, it's the execution that makes them so engrossing. I *so* miss this type of writing!

Lastly, I finally understand why people love Sheila so much. I've reached the point where Lauren's son Dylan has died and seeing Sheila's coldness and glee is chilling. She's so subtle, but powerful. The way she's treating her mom and even Scott is getting to the point where I can't see him remaining married to her much longer. When they do break up I know her crazy ass bout to lose it and I cannot wait! This is the most interesting story that Lauren has had since I started watching.

Let me just tell you I love your reviews of the classic year you're watching. I'm not in the right place in my life to catch up with the old episodes but reading your reviews definitely makes up for it a little bit.

Griffith is a master at writing stories so boring you don't even care enough to complain about. You just stop watching.

    So true...

Now that the wedding is over can Nikki please take out Lola in one of her "Ooops, dreadfully sorry for your loss, Kyle...it was the MS, my foot jerked.  I lost control of the car........."  Theo could comfort him the way he obviously wants to.     Just a thought......(Suggestion), (Dream)

I would love to see that.

Not that I wanted this pairing, but it looks like DG got his way once again. Poor BM

    That is so insulting.

Plus, it must be so awful working with a costar who'd rather be on another planet, rather than share a scene with you. You can tell by DG's delivery he was phoning it in (more than usual).

The day DG leaves the show for good will be too late.

  5. I caught up a few scenes with NuAdam and Original Phyllis. Plus a couple of scenes with Teriah and Devon's sister (?).

I was shocked at how LIFELESS the whole show felt.

The scenes have no crescendo. No tension. No pace. You can't tell the actors have not even rehearsed the script, let alone do the blocking.

It's just a whole lot of people sitting around talking about stuff happening off camera. All the actions is elsewhere. It's being talked about. Compare this to the scenes that are popping up on YT, with 2000's Diane Jenkins plotting her revenge against Victor and you can picture a pretty disheartening scenario.

According to the description this was the only scene Michelle Stafford's Phyllis and Alex Donnelly's Diane shared. It was pretty standard soap fare but when you have two dynamite actresses (before MS became tic central!), Y&R excellent score and exceptional direction (that shot of Phyllis through the handle of Diane's purse was SO simple but they would never take the time for something like that on soaps today) you get something that rises above the rest.

Wow. I loved the show back then. And the blocking + directing choices were a huge part of it. I would pay money to watch 99-01 again.

  7. As a European man who grew up in Italy, I never had the chance to watch AW - although it aired in the country for a few years but it was never big.

However around 2008, P&G released a few years worth of episodes on its streaming service. I started watching and I was hooked.

The way the show was written and staged, it was like the best NYC theatre you could ask for. I still watch random episodes every now and then and I'm mesmerised. The actors had it all. Sometimes I wonder how many takes they would require to nail a scene because every scene seemed perfectly flawless from every point of view. Staging, blocking, dialogue. It was top notch.

My biggest mistake was taking for granted that P&G streaming service. I wish I had downloaded every single episode. Oh well. Youtube makes up for most of them anyway. I'm hoping the actors read the boards occasionally and realize their work is still being acknowledged.

He seems like a nice guy.

Sad that Devon is what we have left of the Winters family though. In their heyday Neil, Dru, Liv and Malcolm were such dynamic characters. Now we have...Devon. Played by a great guy. Nice guy. Swell guy. Good chap.

    LOL

I do find that Bryton plays every scene with this sort of...simmering

     rage. I can't explain it.

Oh yeah it's like he's always about to explode!

I always liked GT, just not as Phyllis. I'm not sure why they keep casting her as somebody unhinged, when her onscreen presence screams "with it."

    NAILED IT.

I think it's because Phyllis morphed from being a character created by Bill Bell to an extension of MS's own heightened persona. So it makes sense that she's coming back. She is really the only one who can embody her.

    NAILED IT.
