Y&R July 2023 Discussion Thread
There doesn't seem to be anywhere for Billy to go at this time. The podcast thing went nowhere,he and Chelsea are a snooze and another round of Billy/Phyllis or Billy/Victoria would be deadly. Had Josh just focused on Jabot and family/business conflict, Billy would have that to fall back on and be able to be around in a strong supporting role for a while forming alliances/rivalries with Jack, Ashley, Kyle ,Allie and other cast members working there eg Mariah, maybe Audra. A tight focus where characters can interact on a personal/business basis. But instead we have Newman Media, Devon's company, Marchetti (why?) Tucker's company, Fenmore's,Jabot etc None of it is dealt with properly but Josh keeps using takeovers and new ventures as the basis for stories when nobody has staff and most deals take place in restaurants.

ALL: Types of characters every soap needs
But it was stated the show was cancelled before her stories could air which puts the time firmly as 1962. Even if that was incorrect, there has been no mention anywhere else that Agnes had any involvement with TBD. Yet her association with all other shows in that timeframe is well documented. The Young Marrieds did have a connection to General Hospital as a couple of GH characters appeared on TYM. Just because Port Charles wasn't formally named it doesn't negate the fact that TYM was set nearby. I am not trying to assert that Agnes wrote the show in 62. Until I see a credible source state that she was involved I remain unconvinced. A Wiki entry possibly based on an anonymous post from a defunct website is not enough for me.

ALL: Types of characters every soap needs
Agnes Nixon had been hired to write the show (and had created the character on which Ada and Rachel Davis, two characters on NBC's Another World were based), but the show was cancelled before her work was ever taped. Ms. Nixon then went to write The Guiding Light. Two quotes from above posts. I am going to labor the point here. To say that we do not know when Agnes was writing TBD but also state that the show was cancelled before her work was taped clearly puts the timeline in 1962. I believe Agnes took over TGL in 58 when Irna wanted to work full time on ATWT. Hence my reluctance to accept this as fact. There is so much misinformation floating around that we need to have consensus.

ALL: Types of characters every soap needs
That Wiki entry says Agnes Nixon went on to write The Guiding Light, when in fact she was already writing that show in 1962. So on the basis of that incorrect statement and no other mention of this in any other reference I am not convinced about Agnes writing TBD or plans to bring on a mother/daughter story.

@Donna L. BridgesI'm interested in the Agnes Nixon/Brighter Day connection. I have never read that she was going to be headwriter. Did she mention it in her book? Is that where the talk of the mother/daughter character came from?

Yes ,although Y&R was a little shaky at that time, there was still Bill Bell at the helm and a lot of familiar characters to ease viewers through the transition.

Variety reports Dec 78 that Jaime Lyn Bauer has signed a new contract with CBS which included 'telefilms and episodic outings' as well as CBS 'to eye series possibilities' I assume that JLB signed a 5 yr contract when she started Dec 73 and those inducements were added to get her to sign on again. But like performers before and after, very little came of it. It seems the promises made were not really followed through and the contracts vague enough that the performer had no real redress. Do we know of any primetime roles that JLB had in that time? I know she did a Tom Selleck pilot'Boston & Killbride' and there is a TV movie'Mysterious Island of Beautiful Women' Was that CBS? Maybe JLB was so busy with Y&R and personal stuff she didn't really pursue much?

Ratings from the 80's
Variety reported daytime ratings for week ending March 7 1980 What is interesting is that the afternoon speciais were included, which I have never seen reported before . They were shown over a number of years pre-empting the 4pm shows. I always wondered how they did and if they were shown mainly for good PR. Anyway, this week shows that they did score excellent numbers although not the desirable demos that advertisers wanted. 1. ABC Afternoon Special 'What Are Friends For?' 2. GH 3. NBC Special Treat ? 4. AMC 5. OLTL 6. GL 7. Y&R 8. CBS Library Special ? 9. AW 10. ATWT

Search was reaping the benefits of the Corringtons stories that had begun in August 78 and building, particularly Travis and Liza. Unfortunately the momentum wasn't sustained. They had Travis and Liza marry, which shortcircuited that couples story potential. And their follow up stories eg Beau/Cissy had none of the appeal of their initial run. Guess that like a lot of writers they were able to come into a stale show and inject new energy but couldn't really follow through. And the next writers were worse. That was it for SFT. Also interesting to see 2 30 min shows in the Top 5.

General Hospital: July 2023 Discussion Thread
In a SOD article a few weeks back they had a performer from each soap detail a typical day. The GH actor (can't remember who) was the only one who talked about taping into the evening. The other shows were all done and dusted by the afternoon. So GH somehow makes the longer working day economical.

On Search it was the explosion at the Tourneur plant and the fall out-Carolyn blinded and Laine up on charges of criminal negligence, the possibility of Gary and Laine's affair being exposed etc.

@DramatistDreamer That was a great read. Now I'm intrigued. How did Colleen survive? How was somebody else buried w/o Traci knowing? Who's heart did Victor get?

ALL: Proposed Soaps Over The Years
I agree that some of those movie pitches seem an odd fit for soaps. The Seven Year Itch for example, just seems a bizarre proposal. Sunset Boulevard? How on earth would that work?

ALL: Types of characters every soap needs
Stefano as written by Pat Falken Smith was a charismatic, villianous character whose misdeeds bordered on the criminal .Once she left Days went to the campy crime stuff and Stefano was turned into a cardboard villian. Mascolo stated as much which is why he left. And then Days started on the merry go round of bringing him back over and over, in ridiculous stories. Marland brought back James and the first return worked but then once he kept coming back and going unpunished the supervillian tag applied I guess.

Ratings from the 80's
Looking at those 1980 ratings had me reflecting on the shows and the fact that 1980 was a poor year storywise for most of the soaps. NBC -Days restructure was a disaster, AW was trying to regroup from the loss of Lemay, the 90 min format and the Texas spin off, Texas itself was off to a shaky start and TD was struggling to come up with viable couples and stories. CBS- Y&R lost focus in the move to an hour,ATWT under the Dobsons wasn't firing and SFT lost the momentum of the Corringtons initial impact. Only GL under Marland seemed to be in a good place storywise. ABC -AMC ,OLTL and GH were strong,RH not so much as the original concept and characters were wearing thin. EON continued to deliver under Slesar. And for the most part, the ratings reflected that.

Best that subsequent regimes just had Traci adopt a child. Or maybe a reveal that Steve had a daughter who turns up and becomes a surrogate daughter to Traci. The back from the dead (Phillip/Diane) or doubles (Mariah/Amanda) stories have been poorly constructed and only the Diane reveal -as nonsensical as it was -has had any real impact. It speaks to the incompetence of TPTB that those decisions were made in the first place (excluding Phillip)
