@DRW50 thanks for sharing. a brief rundown of that story. Betsy lyingly tells Craig her doctor wants her to go on cruise. Betsy does so to warn the cruisebound Steve that Vermiel is dangerous Craig joins Betsy on the cruise. Steve, on ship, poses as wealthy Daniel Bishop and tries to find out more about Vermiel. Steve tells the captain of ship that Vermeil is planning to auction stolen coins. So some plotty stuff about stolen coins with David McCallum on board.

How many of those headwriter switches over the years have really worked out? The Corringtons were well received at Search but subsequent gigs at Texas, GH etc didn't pan out. The Dobsons at ATWT didn't blow us away after their GL stint. Henry Slesar at Search? Ann Marcus at Days? It does seem to be very hit and miss.

i was going to suggest that the Brooklyn studio may not have had the facilities to support production of 2 60 min daily shows, but then I remembered that Texas was produced there throughout it's run. I guess by the time GL moved it was too costly to produce Guiding Light there. I'm not sure what resources could be shared, and obviously not enough to to make it worthwhile economically.

Ron has had more than enough time at Days to strut his stuff. The show is a mess of gimmicky contrived stories and characters. Time for somebody else to be given a chance. Such a pity that there is no one around anymore that remembers what soaps used to be about. Even at this late stage Days could be put back on track somewhat.

Re Days and the early 1980 headwriter situation.A possible scenario. All involve agree that the show needs a shakeup , not only a new headwriter but a revamp of the cast. Decisions are made as to who will get the chop. Nina is contracted and wants to work on her new characters and stories, not wanting to spend her first weeks killing off/writing out the axed characters. So Ruth Brooks Flippen is called in and given the assignment of writing out those characters, so Nina can pretty much start fresh.

Had suspected brain tumor which lead to blackouts and odd behaviour where he believed he was still involved with Leslie -physically attacked her when she rebuffed his advances.Underwent delicate surgery and was cured. I don't think it was much of a fantasy then or now. Pretty common to see older, not particularly attractive wealthy men with much younger and prettier wives. Donald Trump? When analyzing second marriages, men on the Forbes list marry women who are on average 22 years younger.

Pictures of iris' house were featured in the The Soap Opera Book by Manuela Soares in a section on sets. Tt shows a tufted sofa with two patterned chairs either side in front of a fireplace with a portrait of Iris above, bookcases either side. The walls have decorative moldings and there is a recess with a desk off to one side. All in all it looks like an attractive set for the time, more so than her later penthouse. The terrace had wrought iron furniture. The whole look was kind of sophistiatced French. Did AW have better sets than other shows?

If Kandy was particularly witty or offbeat, maybe I would get it, but for me there's little appeal. Loved Ru's 'spontaneous' arrival on set (in full makeup and costume) to school the queens. Because of course he's in his trailer monitoring the goings on full time. They even showed a shot of the camera people to push that it was totally unplannned. And the improv challenge was better edited and more polished than the scripted challenges. Top 3 Jimbo, Kandy and La La.

Grrrr.... Kandy has the worst critiques in the improv challenge-as Michelle points out-she just plays Kandy, as she did in Snatch Game and a mediocre runway but Ru says she makes her laugh so she's safe. Thought Alexis wasn't destined for the chop based on the Kahanna redemtion arc, but La La showed class by voting her out.

Although later it was done to death on most soaps I think the first time a baby's paternity was in question would have been on Days with the Laura/Bill/Mickey triangle. Laura married Mickey but was raped by Bill and became pregnant. But mickey was sterile so the baby was Bill's. it took years for the paternity reveal. Around the same time on Another World Rachel married Russ but had sex with Steven Frame and became pregnant with his child. Everyone believed the child to be Russ' until the truth came out. ATWT did the Paul/Dan/Liz story where Liz got pregnant by Dan who was unhappily married to Susan. But Susan fell pregnant also so Dan stayed with her. His brother Paul married Liz and Dan was unaware Betsy was his daughter, not his niece. Up until then (late 1960's) that sort of story wouldn't have been permitted to due to censorship of the time.

One thing about Black and Stern as headwriters-they brought back Paul and Ryder(Teddy) 2 characters that were related to the core, who older viewers knew rather than invent some newbies. Later we had Eddie Silva and Georgia Tucker as the new young lovers- two characters that had no connection to the Hughes/Stewarts/Snyders-annoying when there were viable characters from those families offscreen.

No other nurse or staff in Sally's room? Ridiculous. The show is having extras and day players now so stretch the budget to make the scene slightly more realistic. And Sally just laying peacefully in bed not hooked up to anything. Let alone Adam making decisions with no authority. The show just takes short cuts with every story.

Nothing spells success more than a spin off from a failing show. In the Texas thread there was discussion on how the spin off was (mis) handled and the damage that was done to both shows.

re Mark La Mura The first mention of Mark Dalton in synopses is Feb 77. A newspaper article says he started Jan 77.

ABC won that week 20.9 NBC just pipped CBS 17.4 to 17.3 NBC ran movies 5 of the 7 nights -a scheduling strategy they couldn't sustain week after week. The 2 nights that they ran series Thurs & Fri they ran 3rd in every slot. Thurs Project UFO/Quincy/WEB and Fri Waverly Wonders/Who's Watching the Kids/Rockford Files/Eddie Capra. Little House and Chips were the only NBC series to win timeslots. The only new ABC series not to win its timeslot was new comedy Apple Pie Sat @8.30 WEB was the first NBC show to be dropped, David Casssidy Man Undercover replaced it. By midseason NBC had dropped all its new shows. Johnny Carson quipped that NBC stood for 'Nine Bombs Cancelled' The only bright spot for NBC was the introduction of Diffrent Strokes. CBS cancelled Mary, Mary Tyler Moore's variety show,People and American Girls. ABC cancelled Apple Pie and Operation Petticoat and brought in Lucan as a replacement.

Agree with all of the above. But several years later Steve returning played by Rod Arrants (who would be believable as a Williams family member) and getting involved with Ashley would work for me. It immediately gives established characters more to do, plays into history and keeps the Abbott/Williams connection going. The Steve Lassiter character was pretty much a plot device anyway and Leanna could still have arrived as Steve's obsessed ex-she was a writer so that would tie in -maybe they had worked on a project together. Having Patty return again would have provided interesting plot possibilities. She may be out for revenge on Jack, or have moved on completely. Would Barbara Crampton have made a good Patty ? I just don't like to see viable characters forgotten. Re Todd, Bill Bell wanted to do a forbidden love story with Marie Horton on Days when she was a nun, so maybe he was hoping for the chance to do that with Todd Williams.

So why bother? Soaps are supposed to be more than 3 week stories and I can't see any major ramifications coming from this unless Sharon and Nick get together for the umpteenth time. Sharon investigating her family history and finding a half sibling would be much more satisfying.

Poor Love of Life. After decades of leading off the CBS soaps, it's shunted to 4pm with limited clearances and immediately tumbles in the ratings, leading to cancellation.
