The poster Edwin Sanchez explains that this ad may have not presented what was actually seen on screen in the episode. He suggests it was actually shown in slow motion w/o any sound. That would probably been more effective.

Primetime stars - Their hits and misses...
I think Nancy set a record by having 2 failed sitcoms in the same season. Nancy, Redd Foxx, Rob Reiner, Harvey Korman- ABC raided the opposition to try and weaken their shows. John Amos was the first lead in the Maude revamp sitcom known first as Onward and Upward and then Mr Dugan. Amos departed early on and Cleavon Little took over. The show was scheduled to debut March 79 but there were objections about the depiction of the lead character and it was cancelled at the last minute. It was revamped again as Hangin In starring Bill Macy and aired for 4 episodes August 79. Apparently the scripts for all versions , going back to the original Maude concept was pretty much the same as was the supporting cast.

OK...finally that much talked about scene. Why would she turn and walk straight into a glass door? The safety standards in Henderson must have been poor at the time. Teeny little Jennifer should have bounced off it.

Ellen Parker taking over from Ellen Dolan as Maureen on GL.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Doug Marland talks about the Kelly/Morgan storyline He is referring to the sexual involvement of Kelly and Morgan who fall in love and have sex though Morgan is seventeen and they are not married. About censorship, sometimes I'll argue violently against it. We had a big problem last year with the first Morgan-Kelly sex scene. They certainly got very uptight and weren't going to let it happen. Codes and Practices said they were not going to let them go to bed together. There is a year and a half story down the drain. Their feeling was that, since my projection had them marry a year and so many months later, wasn't I really saying to teenage girls—-17 or 18-year-old, girls--that if you have sex with this boy it means a happy ending? They marry a year from now ?No ,that's not what I am saying at all. There is a lot of interim story where she suffers a great deal. What I'm telling is that you can be physically ready for sex at a lot telling of ages for but the are you ready for it emotional responsibilities that go along with a sexual relationship? I said the moral of the story was she was not. She is going to go through a lot--she is not going to marry Kelly a year from now because she had sex with him this year. To me, there is a moral point view and a very good lesson for a lot of teenagers. They need to know that along with physical satisfaction goes an emotional responsibility and you have to be ready for it.- Radio Soap Opera Discussion
It would have been interesting had they stuck around into the 60's and survived.- Primetime stars - Their hits and misses...
It might have worked better had Betty's TV character been a Waltons type mom so there would have been a contrast b/w the angelic character she played and the bitchy off screen persona.- BTG: November 2025 Discussion Thread
Agree. She went from Little Miss Innocent to Lucrezia Borgia and now everything is shown from that angle. I'm surprised there isn't a skull and crossbones on the jar's label. 27 sets was the number bandied around , which seemed a lot but on a day to day basis for the format it's not quite enough. Although on a quick count I couldn't get to that number.- ALL: Recasts who were quickly accepted by the audience
I'm interpreting this thread as focussing more on recasts that had to replace popular performers, and thus had to prove themselves rather than just taking the place of actors who hadn't made much of an impression or proven to very popular with viewers. eg Michael O'Leary as Rick on GL replaced Phil McGregor but Phil hadn't made much of an impression in the role and that was why he was replaced in the first place.- BTG: December 2025 Spoilers

Sherry Mathis as Liza on SFT. Meg Bennett was very popular and again Hope Busby hadn't clicked as the first recast, so audiences were probably ready to check out a new Liza. The timing was right as Liza was widowed so didn't have to share scenes with Steve and the new romance with Travis took off, giving Sherry the best opportunity to shine.- Y&R: November 2025 Discussion Thread

Some excerpts from The Barbour Family 'Memory Book' from One Man's Family. HENRY BARBOUR, born 1875. Married 1896. Father of Paul, Hazel, Clifford, Claudia, Jack. Founded the Henry Barbour Stock Brokerage House, 1912. With Henry - and partly from him - I learned what an important and stabilizing thing a family can be in this fast changing world. As he once said: "If we, by example, can in some small way further the desire in America for family tradition and family loyalty, we will have served a worthy purpose." CLAUDIA BARBOUR, born August 1, 1912. Married on May 6, 1931 to John Roberts, Jr. (Deceased 1933). Daughter Joan born May 3, 1933. Claudia married Captain Nicholas Lacey, Bart., June 24, 1935. Divides her time between their home in San Francisco and the Sky Ranch, which Nicky bought in 1935. PAUL BARBOUR, born June 4, 1897. Married June 1918 to Elaine Hunter (Deceased July 1918). Much of Paul's time away from the flying field is spent being a good father to Teddy, whom he adopted in the Summer of 1933. CLIFFORD BARBOUR, born August 1, 1912. Twin brother of Claudia. Married Sept. 19, 1937 to Ann Waite (Deceased 1938). "J.D." born Oct. 16, 1938. Clifford entered his father's business August 10, 1934. When Clifford was in bed with a broken ankle last Spring, he said: "It's a good idea for people to be sick once is a while. It gives them a chance to slow down, and kind of get acquainted with their families." That's what gave me the idea of making this book - as a way of getting acquainted with some of the things about my family I had forgotten. HAZEL BARBOUR, born March 11, 1900. Married William Herbert, May 7, 1932. Twin children Martin Henry ("Hank") and William Barbour ("Pinky") born January 30, 1933. Daughter Margaret born Aug. 2, 1936. When Hazel was a little girl. Father Barbour used to say: "Hmph! Won't that child ever be anything but all legs?" Now he admits she's one of the most gracious and courageous mothers he has ever known. Hazel herself says: "Naturally my chief interest is making a wellrounded home for Hank and Pink and Margaret. Beyond that I ask very little... simplicity, a little pleasure and a great deal of pleasant contact with the family." JACK BARBOUR, born January 13, 1917. Married Betty Carter, Deo. 18, 1936. Jack says: "Betty's the swellest wife a guy could have" - and Betty says: "Being married to Jack is more fun than I ever had in all my life." Jack and Betty have been married over three years now - and I've learned this from both of them: that when young people of the newer generation decide to marry, they try with everything that's in them to make their relationship solid and honest. They seem to see in marriage and a home not only something pleasant and exciting in itself - but one of the few sure, stable institutions that are left them in this changing and uncertain world. Claudia says: "Betty's a pretty wise young wife... When she calls Jack 'My great big wonderful man' he does ex¬ actly as she wants him to. Even Jack admits: 'The reason Betty and I get on so well is she goes her way - and I go with her' ." NICHOLAS LACEY, born London, England, Oct. 6, 1907. Husband of Claudia, and' father of Penelope. Nicholas deserves a full page in this book. ..because I have learned from him that a son-in-law can be so generous and considerate, so open-hearted, that he wins his way into the heart of the family. As Nicky himself says: "Joining a new family's like reading a good book - with something new and interesting on every page." Nicky married Claudia June 24, 1935, at our home in Sea Cliff, with Clifford as best man. When Nicky went to get the license, they asked him if he was looking for a hunting license and he said: "No, the hunting is over. I want a license to marry the girl I've found." In the Summer of 1935, Nicky bought the Sky Ranch where he raises thoroughbred horses, and where he and Claudia and the children spend their Summers and a lot of weekends. Here is a snapshot of Claudia beside the swimming pool they built last Summer. The whole ranch covers 400 acres - and much of it is woodland. FANNY BARBOUR, born 1878, married 1896. Voted by the Barbours the most loving, tolerant, and kindly mother that they ever had. Knowing her generous nature, perhaps the best we children could wish for her is what she wished for herself - when she said, just a little while ago: "All I ask or hope for the years ahead is a repetition of all the good years that lie behind me. I have your father and I have you children. What more could any woman ask? I will find strength in Hazel's strength, anticipation in Claudia and Nicky's anticipation, and pleasure in Clifford's pleasure. I will find food for thought in Paul's reflective nature, and I will find youth and the excitement of being alive in Jack and Betty's new found happiness. Mine will be a future running over with good things. "- Primetime stars - Their hits and misses...
Following Maude, Rue had the short lived flop Apple Pie with Dabney Coleman and then it was guest shots till GG. Her only other network series was an 11 episode stint on Safe Harbor. Speaking of Dabney, he had several attempts at finding a hit. He was a regular on Mary Hartman/Forever Fernwood 76-78 Apple Pie 78 Buffalo Bill 83-84 Slap Maxwell 87-88 Drexell's Class 91-92 Madman of the People 94-95 None of those sitcoms worked. The Guardian 2001-2004 Back to sitcoms with Courting Alex 2006 And finally Boardwalk Empire on HBO 2010-11- Y&R: November 2025 Discussion Thread
There was nary a mention of Paul. Like he never existed. I think it would have been nice had there been a message from Paul wishing the couple all the best. And maybe Christine reflecting - something along the line's of 'Paul will always have a special place in my heart... After all Paul and Christine were pretty much presented as the perfect couple. If Michael and Lauren, 2 characters who plotted against Danny and Cricket can now be besties, I think Paul deserved something.- ALL: Recasts who were quickly accepted by the audience
Erika Slezak as Viki. A bad recast (Joanne Dorian) following Gillian Spencer probably had viewers on side with the new Viki and Erika of course made the role her own. Chris Robinson as Rick on GH. On Y&R, although David Hasselhoff was a 'different' Snapper audience acceptance seemed positive. Whereas I think audiences never really warmed to Victoria Mallory in the way they did Janice Lynde, but accepted her nonetheless.- ALL: Recasts who were quickly accepted by the audience
I think Carmen Duncan was pretty well accepted as Iris on AW. The fact viewers knew Beverlee was not returning and Iris was such a dynamic character helped. Also the time b/w the two actresses helped and Carmen was a good actress also.- Primetime stars - Their hits and misses...

If it's written well they could get at least another year out of Hayley. The poisoning plot could go awry, she could be blackmailed by someone, she could blackmail Bill etc etc Not quite sure while the poison is still having no effect? And if Bill almost dies, what is her cover story? I wonder if the storytelling style is disenchanting some viewers eg characters not appearing for a week or so and their stories losing momentum.- BTG: November 2025 Discussion Thread
You probably won't get much of an argument around here, apart from those stanning for the destiny couple Ashley/Andre. But at this point MVJ seems happy to keep them on. And a nitpicker observation- I wish they would stop using those establishing shots of mega mansions and then transitioning to small rooms with no coherent floorplans that in no way match the exterior. Maybe the establishing shots should be more closeup eg an entrance porch or just a portion of the house.- Primetime stars - Their hits and misses...
I guess the contract issues Bain and Landau had on MI might have caused them to be seen as troublesome? Maybe neither of them wanted to be tied down to a network series after all that went down?- BTG: November 2025 Discussion Thread
Agree that keeping the Hawthornes in the background to be brought on later is a good strategy. It would be nice to see another family to contrast with the Duprees. Of course the issue is there is only a certain amount of budget and airtime available. So they can't keep adding characters. Doug was dropped and Isaiah arrived. Who do you think might possibly be next to go in the coming months? - ALL: Recasts who were quickly accepted by the audience
