ALL: Actors who returned in a new role - has it ever worked?
Renee Jones on Days as Lexie #3 could be considered a big success compared to her Nikki Wade character a decade earlier and was more successful than the first two Lexie’s. She of course is a rare exception. The whole doppelgänger/lost twin/same actor, different character has been completely over killed by both Y&R and Days. And back in the day I though Tamara Braun as Ava/Taylor recast was bad on Days. Even primetime soaps were not immune, especially for short-term stints and roles. Most notably Dallas brought back the Pam recast actress in another season as a Pam lookalike.

ALL: February sweeps previews
Yeah these spoilers for Y&R and B&B are pretty much already going or in the case of Xander, all over with unless there’s something more to that. As one soap columnist in the early 00’s use to joke the magazine previews were already over by the time people pulled them out of the grocery bag LOL.

BOLD: Could this be Sheila's daughter
LOL!! That was so awkward. If she really had wanted to honor her mother she would’ve just named her son Taylor 🤣 I wonder if it’s because “Jack Hamilton” was already used on that MIA child of Nick, Taylor and Brooke’s LMAO. In all seriousness when Sheila came back in 2021 she did mention to both Deacon and Finn all her other children had disowned her, so I’m guessing that was a blanket statement to cover Mary, Diana, and possibly Ryder and Daisy. Because the logic on B&B is always so dumb. Reminds me of that time Ivy needed a green card even though she was a daughter of a US Citizen 🤣

ARTICLE: Kate Schettler Is Not Playing That Diana on ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’
@Soapsuds You know Carlivati would have made the connection 😏🤣

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
May have not been that soon lol but it felt like it LOL. What I found even more amusing was Frons’ exit mirrored Barbara Bloom’s exit at CBS; both left shortly after a soap ended (AMC for Frons, ATWT for Bloom) as their contracts expired and both had the same cover story of “Proud of our accomplishments but I just wanted to try something new!” (In other words, asked to resign). I forgot The Chew ran through 2018 before it was canned. I wonder how Frons felt about that.

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
I’ll always remember reading an article where Frons championed on how The Chew and The Revolution would be ABC Daytime’s new legacy only for Frons to get fired from ABC a few weeks later and his “new legacy” shows would get cancelled. I hadn’t seen karma for a soap killing executive like that since the downfall of NBC’s John Rohrbeck in the 90’s. No wonder he turned down an interview a few years back.

1990s trends
If there was one good trend in the early 90’s it was almost every soap brought, expanded and/or revitalized AA families and characters. Y&R got the Barber/Winters, GL had Hamp and the Grants, Days revived the Carvers etc. Unfortunately it was all for naught as by 1996/97 except for Y&R and to some extent ATWT all the shows dropped them. In the late 90’s a lot of the soaps decided to do their own Titanic-esque plots including ATWT, Sunset Beach, Days, Passions etc. There was a trend of soaps bringing back their 80’s supervillains in the mid-90’s. Stefano, Carl, Alan, and finally James all resurfaced 1993-1996/97.

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
Prayers Y&R is next up for a major HW/EP change! I don’t watch GH but I’m glad Mulcahey is still in the business as I too have fond memories from his GL and definitely thought Thudley wasted his talents at B&B. Back in late 2019/early 2020 when Mulcahey was leaving B&B there was a rumor that he was up to replace JG at Y&R that I had so hoped to be true but alas it was just a rumor.

R.I.P.: David Gail, 1965-2024 (Joe, Port Charles; Dean, Savannah; Stuart, BH90210)
Wow, RIP indeed. I first remember Gail on a little watched NBC soap that I watched called The Round Table before seeing him again on 90210 and Savannah where I enjoyed him the most. Savannah was a show that ended way too soon. I have wondered about the Stuart arc before. I have thought that maybe the writers didn't quite know what to do with Stuart. Going from my memory: first he's a great guy, then he's kinda lazy/spoiled, next Dylan is warning Brenda about his past and finally he flips out on Brenda and he's gone. Of course Brenda was then gone not long afterwards, so perhaps the backstage drama played a factor.

You’re right she was his attorney I couldn’t remember the connection for sure. But hey violent on-screen murders that occurred on Days, GL, and Y&R didn’t stop those shows from retconning those murders just a few years later, so AW could have been ground breaking LOL.

Cass/Rex was fun from what I saw when it reran on SoapNet. Anne O’Donnell was also really strange story in AW’s dying days made even stranger when Anne revealed she had been Fax Newman’s lawyer and that’s why Fax killed Frankie. I don’t know who wrote that mess but the idea was essentially reused years later on Y&R for the reason of why Patty stole her psychiatrist’s face. AW should’ve gone for broke and have Anne be Frankie after all.

The silence of that is with good reason. The Coronation Massacre was nothing more a blatant rip-off of Dynasty’s Moldavian Massacre, and only Brandon’s blink if you miss her wife died. It was nothing more than a laughable sweeps stunt already padded between a plane crash that involved the majority of the cast before the Massacre, the Kiraksis mansion fire, the Salem High chemistry lab exploding the following month, and then by May/June bombs in Salem. It was very easy to forget.

Falcon Crest
Gotcha for some reason I thought Lorimar was struggling when Warner acquired them. But Perfect Strangers? Shame on Lorimar for releasing that on an unsuspecting public. 🤣

ALL: Imposters/clones/impersonate
Pretty much this. I recall Hattie did get an exit scene by leaving town when Stefano left following the ridiculous “Bombs in Salem” story because she was going to be a liability or something lol, but I think the only people who knew Hattie were Marlena, Roman, Fay and I think Kate. Langan’s era was full of story/plot danglers. All that needed to be said. The Langan era was sheer insanity. Rachel/Justine was one of the strangest stories I had ever seen on a soap at that time and actually made the Possession story, which was running concurrently, look more plausible and sensible. The story suffered from a turnover of EP and writers with the very baffling decision to kill Ryan off. And VW somehow kept her Justine accent all the way to the show’s end.

Personally I think the one I haaate the most is the use of masks! WTF, put on a face mask and suddenly your whole body conforms to that person’s? Days uses this tactic the most, so corny LMAO. Y&R went overkill in this category. During the Bell years we only had Katherine/Marge and Blade Rick. Then, since 2006 we have had: Phyllis/“Sheila” or whoever that was Carmen/Ines William/Jeffrey John/Alistair Katherine/Marge 2.0 Patty/Emily Lauren/Sarah Patty/Emily 2.0 Cassie/Mariah Adam/Gabe Jack/Marco Hilary/Amanda Did I miss any of them? B&B has had Johnny/Rush, Amber/April, and Owen/Casper Oddly B&B has had a reversal of this when Phoebe and Steffy were identical twins but became fraternal twins. Yeah I remember wayyy back during the SSK story when they brought Hattie but played by back there was much speculation that this was the case. Then a few years later when Samantha appeared to Marlena in a dream DH played and there was outrage that Andrea wasn’t brought back and I remember someone commented that Andrea didn’t even look like Diedre anymore.

Falcon Crest
Okay @kalbir I just went back to see what was originally planned and it was much worse 😮! This is what I found: Before the writers came to realize that CBS would definitely cancel the series, they planned to have a seasonal cliffhanger in order to lay the groundwork for a tenth season. Their plans included the following ideas: The question might arise if Pilar's baby is really Lance's or possibly Jovan's. Falcon Crest was still supposed to belong to Michael Sharpe, who had plans to pave it over to turn it into an industrial park. Angela's attempts to get the property back with the help of her family were supposed to be supported by Sydney. Angela and Sydney were to come up with a plan to publicly destroy Michael Sharpe — at the wedding of Sydney and Danny. While Danny was supposed to really love Sydney and have turned against Sharpe, Sydney was supposed to marry him out of convenience only. Although Danny was to know she is not in love with him, he was to agree to the wedding. The ceremony was to be Sharpe's final victory, however as Angela's plan was supposed to backfire. The writers' ideas called for final scenes in the style of "The Godfather" movie where Sharpe was to orchestrate the demise of all of his enemies during the sacred event of the wedding. He was supposed to destroy them all — to quote the season 9 bible, "whether financially, emotionally, or physically — leaving all of our 'Falcon Crest' characters to pick up the pieces of their lives next season." Yikes! I’m definitely glad none of this happened. Did they forget what kind of show they writing for? And double yikes that they had wanted to keep Frank Runyeon’s comical character around.

Falcon Crest
I suspect there was a lot of rewriting and refilming as well. Of course as we know Angela’s monologue was written by Wyman herself and I remember reading on that Falcon Crest Fan Club Website she also ad-libbed some things to bring closure during those last few eps. I’m just glad they were able to take a hint, especially after what happened to Dynasty the year and did not as we discussed in the Dynasty thread. Oddly Dallas made the same mistake Dynasty did. I know Lorimar was collapsing at the time but I wish the show could have at least given Sullivan and Ladd their set number of episodes throughout the season, sort of like Joan Collins during Season 9 of Dynasty. But alas. In addition to insult over the budget issues, a good chunk of viewers just did not come back after the 1988-89 reason. I think the back to basics would have been a good thing but they totally botched it by killing off Melissa and inserting a bunch of boring characters I could have cared less for. Even though they were nasty, I at least found myself intrigued by Michael and Genele while Tommy/Kelly and Nick/Anna drama felt very pointless IMO.

Falcon Crest
Apologies @kalbir I had thought my reply went through wayyy back, I was musing through recent threads and found my reply from last was still sitting in the reply box 😵💫 While I found Season 9 a lot more entertaining than Season 8, there is a little lot of stuff that is very unnecessarily cruel, like Maggie’s death, Pilar fierce to sleep with a sleazy obese businessman, Emma in an abusive relationship once again and Chris Agretti’s murder etc. I get the theme of the season was losing everything and then winning, but the losing everything part was overkill indeed. The storylines surrounding Frank and Genele and Walker made me think I was watching Twin Peaks, Melrose Place, or even Desperate Housewives to a degree. Definitely were not typical Falcon Crest or even an 80’s prime time soap stories. I think keeping Maggie alive and around the whole season as well as Emma would have been a lot more beneficial. The saving grace of Season 9 was at least everyone on got a happy ending, even right down the fact that Michael might still be Danny’s father after all. I had seen Morgan’s obituary earlier this month, thanks for sharing this! Morgan actually played Lori,Lance’s side piece, before being recast and later returning in a new role as Gabrielle. Gabrielle was interesting but also DOA as the character was just placeholder to have Chase have another affair before Chase was killed off since Foxworth was known to be leaving anyways although she made a pivotal return in Season 7. Interestingly the actress who was the Lori recast also returned in Season 7 in another supporting role.

B&B: January 2024 Discussion Thread
Darin’s been buying time for the longest. I had to literally LOL when Wyatt mentioned to Liam he was single last year (So much for Flo!🤣) and now just out of the blue he’s leaving LA. I know Darin has done some other projects but I’m sure he could fall back on B&B if he needed to unlike so many. And yes the Carter/Eric stuff was just….unfathomable. Carter may need some professional help if he thinks Eric asking him to keep sleeping with his wife because he’s impotent was “fatherly”. Meanwhile Sheila is back to where she was at the end of her 2017-18 stint as a gossiping waitress at a restaurant everyone keeps visiting even though they know she works there… @YRfan23 If you noticed this too. Don’t worry Poppy pretty sure we all made the same face:

Y&R: January 2024 Discussion Thread
Haha yeah and ever since then Jack had been shown to indulge himself with the occasional champagne, wine, hard liquor etc. on a show that use to make sure we saw Nikki and Katherine drinking club soda In champagne glasses for special occasions. Yeesh. I don’t know, but the Abbott men have been treated differently from others in their addictions. It use to bother me for the longest Billy was often in trouble for being big time alcoholic and gambler but everyone was always laughed “Oh that’s our Billy!” and turned a blind eye. I joked about Fen and his sponsor earlier but it is interesting they also brought that up to involve Lauren in this. If I recall right Fen’s addiction mainly happened offscreen between ZT’s two stints in 2019 and was mainly used as a plot point for Adam to blackmail Michael.

Y&R: January 2024 Discussion Thread
Yeah Phyllis was so pathetic and annoyingly desperate LOL. Danny and Christine only went on a couple dates and she couldn’t contain her jealousy. Just pitiful. Jack’s addiction was something that was swept under the rug for years now….I remember for a few years Jack was Neil’s sober and teetotaler friend, but that changed when Jack had his affair with Gloria and ever since then Jack drinks. Jack mentioned to Diane about his 2012 gun shot wound, but I don’t recall Diane learning about Patty’s antics at all unless I missed something. The Nikki and Audra scenes today in the 1/18 episode were very nice. Audra surprisingly again came as Nikki’s confidant. Ah finally we get a glimpse into Audra’s past with the mention of her father.

Phyllis is so psychotic and pathetic LOL. Lauren: “I know how important a sponsor is to someone in recovery. Fen is very close to his. In fact he and Trey spent Christmas with him.” Translation: Trey got the below shocking view of Fen and his sponsor on Christmas morning when Trey opened up the guest bedroom’s door @Soapsuds 😁
