Also GL summer 1993: Roger/Holly become involved and Roger's crashes Ed's party at the country club (the episode that got Michael Zaslow his long-awaited for Lead Actor Emmy.)

Forgot to mention in my previous post

B&B summer 1992: Sheila's new reign of terror.

B&B summer 1993: Battle for Belief. Bill Bell's last hurrah before passing the reigns to Bradley.

Summer 1993 was also the summer of SMG’s Kendall appearing and wreaking havoc on Erica on AMC. For me, that was the last really good summer for soaps (as 1993 was the last really strong year for soaps in general).

  2. I saw Chris Eubanks play FAA at the USO qualies way back in 2018. He lost that match, but it’s so cool to see him win his first title today in Mallorca against a solid grass player like Mannarino. Especially at this point in his career, at 27. He’s now 43 in the world.

Yes, so much sneak watching on school breaks.

Y&R summers 1986-1993: Social issue storylines that usually featured Cricket plus a cringey Danny concert in many of those summers.

Y&R summer 1990: Early Dru plus Sheila's reign of terror beginning.

B&B summer 1990: Caroline's death. I cried so much after her final episode. Thankfully school didn't start for another few weeks.

GL summer 1991: Alexandra exposing Roger at the country club.

    GL summer 1992: Blackout

Y&R summer 1994: Frat party started

GL summer 1993: Kat/David with David accidentally killing Vinnie and going on the run, all the Macaulay West stuff with Joe Lando

OLTL summer 1993: the aftermath of Marty’s rape

I’ve seen him in so much stuff over the years, but this was probably the most memorable moment for me. So glad I saw this in the theater and was unspoiled. (If people haven’t seen “Wait Until Dark,” an absolute classic, go watch. TCM used to air it a lot.)

Not necessarily. The profile I posted up top indicates he is highly susceptible to fame and flattery, and kowtows to those he considers to be big names in Hollywood.

But you're right that there is a sustained cultural movement Trump was the flashpoint for, and while we've made some gains it's going to be a long road continuing to fight it off.

Looks like you called it. WBD reversed the ousting of TCM’s 25-year head of programming (at least they’ll have his institutional knowledge, which had been a concern) and Spielberg/Scorsese/PTA will partner with the network to curate content.

We need more character's like FINN on BOLD. A good moral person, always tries to do the right thing

We don't many MALE character's that are true soap heroes anymore, they're usually abusive douche bags

I wonder how much the Sopranos-era push for more “antiheroes” played in that, but you could see the shift on soaps in the ‘90s. Obviously, soaps have turned rapists into heroes since time immemorial (Luke Spencer being most notable) and dark, troubled characters saved by a woman’s love are a romance-novel staple, but the feeling that good=boring and/or hypocritical, the pursuit of shock value, the valorization of Todd Manning not only after he raped Marty but terrorized Luna and Nora, etc. really shifted the landscape until Guza and co. just said “Fück it. Let’s put our thumbs on the scale and make killers heroes and more traditional characters the villains” and Sheffer professed the need to “give men their dicks back” to critical applause and Emmy wins.

You need at least one self-identified outsider. They don't have to be from the wrong side of the tracks, but by design, intent or circumstance, they should feel out of sync if not isolated from others in their circle.

Do you feel like any soap has done that well recently? Sally could have been that on Y&R. B&B used her for a quick, empty nod to history that CH managed to transcend.

    A vixen

    Does Days have one?

On Y&R, Audra is in that mold. Imani could have been as well. Does GH have one these days? B&B with Brooke apparently having aged out of those types of stories?

This is all fantasy for me so why not?  Although I can’t quite imagine them working well together.  I wonder what someone trained under the lush style of the Bell shows would do with them at SB.  The clash of modern storytelling and intelligent characters with lush production.

Am I missing a John Conboy joke?

  8. Obviously, ideally, characters should be multidimensional and not fit comfortably into a box. And soaps have different story needs based on their style or what types of stories they are trying to tell at a certain time. BUT what are some basic “types” that every soap needs to maximize drama, create a sense of community, etc.? Which characters historically embody that type, and which soaps have lacked (or are lacking) characters of that type, to their own detriment?

@slick jones mentioned Audra on Y&R as a good “sh!t stirrer,” and it’s been a while since the show has had an effective one of those, even though it’s a very broad type. A good, gossipy, strategic manipulative mind-fücker with a hidden agenda (at least to most of the other characters). The actress and the writing sometimes overplay the rubbing-her-hands-together scheming so that her victims like Elena seem dim when they can’t see through her, but in general, she’s a good addition IMO.

As much as I loved Claire Labine I’m not certain where to put her.  For some reason her style seems like it would have been fabulous on Another World with the characters/actors from the early 90’s.

I think AW is an inspired idea. Lots of actors who could have made music out of her literary dialogue like Mark Pinter and, of course, folks like Charles Keating, Linda Dano, Vicky Wyndham, and Stephen Schnetzer. Plus it would have been interesting to see how she would have handled the young scene (Lorna/Dean/Jenna/Matt et al), similar to how she handled Brenda, Robin, and that crew over on GH. I used to think Claire might have been a good fit for AMC, but I’m not so sure anymore. Then again I wouldn’t have naturally assumed she’d be good for GH, but she on paper should have been a decent fit for OLTL.
