  1. according to online sources, kavovit left ‘world turns in october 1991. the role wasn’t recast until model john howard’s short run in 1996. scott holroyd took over in 2001 until replaced by roger howarth in 2003.
  2. i remember her well from a touching episode of l&o svu. lois smith played her mother, who was beside herself when friedman’s character became pregnant.
  3. rarely mentioned, but crucial; from wikipedia: “Overall, the first half of the 1980s saw a revival in Guiding Light's popularity, with a top-five placing achieved in most years and even a brief dethroning of then-powerhouse General Hospital from the #1 ratings spot for three consecutive weeks. However, as the decade progressed, the ratings slipped a bit, although it was still performing solidly. In 1995, beginning with CBS flagship station WCBS-TV in New York, Guiding Light began airing at 10 a.m. Eastern time in several markets. Its once-solid performance began to crumble by the mid-1990s, when its ratings sunk as low as ninth place out of ten.[25] However, during the controversial clone storyline in 1998, the ratings experienced a brief resurgence, moving up to fifth for many weeks that summer. Nielsen reported Guiding Light had 5 million viewers in 1999. Up until its CBS finale in 2009, stations in a number of markets aired Guiding Light in the morning either at 9 or 10 a.m. local time: Miami, Chicago, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Dallas-Fort Worth, Orlando, Atlanta, Columbia, SC, Fort Wayne, IN, South Bend, IN, Portland, OR, Quad Cities, Buffalo, Reno, Portland, ME, Milwaukee, Albany, NY, and Scranton-Wilkes Barre, PA. Guiding Light aired at 12 noon local time in Honolulu, Hawaii. In Savannah, GA, it aired at 4:00 pm local time.”
  4. a freebie from today’s ny times: i survived guiding light
  5. and, according to her imdb page, ‘love of life’ (1967-8) and ‘secret storm’ (1973-4). not surprising — so very many ny stage actors were on soaps.
  6. atwt: chris hughes should have been the ultimate legecy character. but the combination of multiple recasts, inconsistent storylines — his ongoing conflicts with his father made absolutely no sense — made that impossible.
  7. thank you both for these astute observations. for years, i’ve struggled to articulate why i prefered the p&g soaps, i had always described as a styalistic preference, but never realized it was the actual day-to-day writing. and, as donna noted, while cbs pretty much left bill bell to his own devices, the network felt that the p&g soaps needed the network’s “help.” have that on the record from lucy johnson! of course, that help led both gl and ‘world turns straight down the [!@#$%^&*]-shute.
  8. i recall seeing it on youtube a while back, but can’t find it. but, i do know it’s in the paley center archives. don’t know how to access it, though.
  9. here’s a freebie link to that ny times article: as the world turns interrupted by kennedy shooting
  10. lara parker of dark shadows has died. free link to ny times obit lara parker
  11. agreed! that would have been something to see,
  12. here’s the ny times obit: david mccallum obit doesn’t mention his turn on ‘as the world turns’ in 1983. his ‘man from uncle’ cast mate, robert vaughn, was also on ‘world turns for a short run in the mid 90s.
  13. here’s the ny times obit: david mccallum obit doesn’t mention his turn on ‘as the world turns’ in 1983. his ‘man from uncle’ cast mate, robert vaughn, was also on ‘world turns for a short run in the mid 90s.
  14. oh — i did see that. when you said ‘read between the lines,’ i thought there was some actual text to parse that i had missed:)

  16. could it be that the studios are finally getting serious, or is this just for show? top studio execs join wga talks
  17. hard to believe it’s been 13 years…
  18. arlene sorkin obit nice obit from today’s ny times (it’s a freebie)
  19. the great advantage abc daytime had over cbs was that abc owned their shows, so they were able to create a brand that was immediately recognizable. cbs had to deal with sony, bell-phillips, and, of course, p&g all had to agree, and i can’t say i was surprised when a cbs publicist told me that p&g was an absolute nightmare to deal with when it came to marketing. and that the bell shows and p&g shows were so stylistically different prevented cbs creating a brand for their shows.
  20. interesting fact: steve babecki was the first husband of irna’s daughter, katherine. she’s credited as ‘world turns headwriter under that name from 1966-70
  21. technically it was a block. but guiding light really took a hit from the time shift in so many major media markets. from wikipedia: In 1995, beginning with CBS flagship station WCBS-TV in New York, Guiding Light began airing at 10 a.m. Eastern time in several markets. Its once-solid performance began to crumble by the mid-1990s, when its ratings sunk as low as ninth place out of ten.[26] However, during the controversial clone storyline in 1998, the ratings experienced a brief resurgence, moving up to fifth for many weeks that summer. Nielsen reported Guiding Light had 5 million viewers in 1999. 22. also remember her as fran fine’s cousin the the nanny
  23. according to a variety article you posted upthread, liamst’s share was under 30. in the 60s, atwt was pulling shares as high as 60 — sound’s like half. curious about where you heard that irna quit the show a month after its debut.
  24. true — but i suspect that if it hadn’t been those two storylines, she would have found another reason to leave. and, this may be an unpopular opinion, but i gotta say i think cbs made the right call re those storylines. by all accounts, they were unpopular with viewers, and, and yes, i’m award that a good deal of tha pushback on mia was likely due to anti-asian bias, i also think there may have been conservative catholic viewers who objected to the nun storyline. but, as one of the variety articles referenced upthread notes: cbs was on the verge of cancelling the show. so, change the storylines or cancel the show?
