BTG: July 2025 Discussion Thread
Those character interactions wouldn't have been prevented if the secret was revealed to the audience through Martin's dream. Maybe we would have understood why Martin doesn't want to tell his family or maybe even empathize with his course of action a little more. We could have seen Martin struggle with his decision to hold the press conference. However, keeping the secret hidden from the audience this long, has taken the life out of certain scenes. The scene with Kenny and Smitty was so brief and revealed nothing. It could have been so juicy had we known the secret and we saw Kenny taunting Smitty about it. Both men having a real face off. The men gathered at Bill's office as many have mentioned before was pointless. All that to have Martin have a breakdown so nothing else would be shown just to keep the secret under wraps. Now we have had multiple scenes with Smitty and Jacob and Vernon and Bill that don't go anywhere and regurgitate mostly the same thing all for the sake of this secret not being out to the viewer. Ted who knows his son's secret is MIA and being played by Leslie. This would have been a great time to build that father/son relationship we really haven't seen from Martin and Ted. I mean Vernon is pretty much the paternal role in Martin's life. My understanding in the beginning and based on conversations that Martin had was that he wasn't fully aware of his dream or what happened that night. Otherwise, why would he go talk to his mother and say he's been having weird dreams and not sure what they're about. When Nicole told him to seek help, he knew not to because Vernon had just told him he couldn't talk to anyone about it. He had conversations with Vernon that implied he didn't know what happened. When he first confronted Kenny, he wasn't sure what the whole "What color is your money?" thing was about. I think it would have been interesting around now...maybe a week or two ago, Martin would have at least had the realization of what this dream was all about. The secret wouldn't need to come out to everyone, but it would have kept some momentum going. Right now, we are in this weird limbo of reveal and nothing really moving for the sake of keeping the secret still secret. It was a little ridiculous for all these men to get Kenny where they wanted him to then botch the plan and have Kenny parade all over town like he didn't have a hit on him. It's fine that Randy didn't go through with it...but is Joey a criminal or is he cosplaying as one? You mean to tell me Big Bad Joey has never had someone offed and that Randy, his right hand, has never had to do something this questionable? There is where sometimes I feel the creators are too close to their characters. Maybe someone didn't want to make Randy an intentional murderer, but at least make Kenny's escape something more believable. I know there aren't many sets, but this could have been done in a more interesting way.

Not telling his family first so they aren't completely blindsided by the shock this will cause, no crisis management team, and not seeking legal advice (thankfully Bill offered), Martin is just a full on mess. Mostly due to Vernon who has forced him to keep this a secret for so long and clearly Martin isn't coping well, but to not secure your family, your career, and yourself before holding this press conference is just dumb. I guess we know why Ty and Samantha seem to have no sense either. I'm glad you pointed that out about June's stay. Since when are busy and expensive hospitals just holding onto patients as acts of charity? I am still holding onto hope that there is something more to this secret otheriwse yikes. I am fine with stories and reveals taking their time, but the way the played this story, it should have been revealed to the audience already or it needed to play out differently. This circling the airport and never landing is tedious.

When I found out Joey was involved, I assumed that it may have been something to do with sex work. One of Joey's escorts gone bad and Joey himself wanted to keep it under wraps. If not, it seems messy getting Joey involved when he doesn't need to be. I enjoyed it and I'm not the biggest Vanessa fan. Considering that Ted knows Martin's secret, it is such a missed opportunity to not have him supporting his son through this. We heard about Bill and Ted having these excellent adventures as the outsiders of the Duprees in their marriage - what have been amazing to have them team up and show us this dynamic while supporting Martin. Would give both Bill and Ted some humanity and layers.

Considering it was self defense it might be viewed differently under the law. Now hiding it and paying people off might not be looked at so kindly. However, there are people in politics who have done much worse and they have no issues.

But hadn't he mentioned to Vernon not fully knowing what his dream was about?

BTG: July 2025 Discussion Thread
I am going to be honest, but respectfully, this whole secret seems to be building up to be a let down. I will take some blame for it, because when it was stated that a showrunner said no one has been able to guess the secret so far on social media, I made it out to be something more complex and layered. I assumed early on that the secret was an accident or self-defense that led to someone's death. I think most of us figured that out. While we don't know Kenny's motive yet - racism and social status seem to be triggers. Unless Kenny's motive is some big shocker or there is another element we don't know - than I think we pretty much know all the major details of this secret. Now that Kenny is potentially dead, what else can we possible learn about this secret from that end? Also, does Joey have any stake on this secret coming out or not? Vernon said that they can get Joey out of this plan if necessary. So does he care or not? So Bill was hired as the fixer after Martin acted in self defense. The cops were paid off by someone to keep this quiet. But why would Joey have paid Malone? So we will have a press conference for Martin to tell us what we already know. I really hope this is more layered than this. Otherwise, this is lame. Also, why cut the Kenny and Smitty interaction short. I was hoping that Kenny might have spilled something more to Smitty that would have added another layer to this secret, but then he told his kids he doesn't know anything. I am hoping I am very wrong, but this would be dumb if this build up and all these men involved gave us this.

And when did Martin regain full recollection of the secret that he is able to hold a press conference about it. And yes to whoever said the press conference at Orphey's was a weird move.

Wouldn't Naomi have Hayley's number in her phone? If she were to put that number in than Hayley's name would come up.

My goodness massive 🙄 I will have to comment on this and how dumb it all feels in a sec. But I had to laugh when Samantha said if he's not here where would he (Martin) go...girl, maybe his wealthy grandparents or parents homes with more than enough rooms.

I was just going to comment that Vanessa and Dani make better friends than Dani and Pam. And I'm curious how Pam would play against Nicole, because I am sure it would read better than whatever Pam and Dani are giving now.

I have grown accustomed to his more casual interactions with other actors. It sounds a little less like he's narrating Reading Rainbow and has a more natural flowly conversation feel mixed his unique cadence and tone. However, there is no denying those bigger emotional reactions come across poorly. I am not calling for a recast at all. This is how I felt about Ted. The acting needed work, but the actor should be able to stay and given the resources to improve. I second Smitty and Jacob not needing to be involved romantically. I enjoy their friendship and I wouldn't mind there being some unfounded spousal jealousy because of how close those two become, but I do not need them to actually cheat. Friends is a good direction for them. Glad he has a sense of humor about it, but Martin should have been home teaching these kids some lessons because they're a mess as teens.

Also, Martin's family is now involved and he still refused to tell them anything. Meanwhile, Martin doesn't fully know the secret to begin with, so it is a bit maddening. He wants to protect his family, so tell them they're in danger and why they might be. How dumb is it that Martin knows Kenny is out there and he just lets Samantha go to the park, where Kenny apparently tracked Ty done originally. I didn't mind the trees as some of you did, but it did bother me that the park was completely empty. Ashley is right that pregnancy cravings are usually heightened or occur during the second trimester, but as a nurse she should also know that every body is unique and it is not uncommon at all to have cravings happen in the first trimester. As a nurse, she should know that. She was acting like it was impossible. Granted she is suspicious of Hayley at this point, but still seemed weird. Furthermore, Hayley is technically second trimester by now anyway. When she had those cramps with Dani, we learned she is 10 weeks pregnant, so that would mean by now she should be at least 13 weeks or at the start of her second trimester.

Honestly, best scene Ashley has had so far IMO. JJ does not do the emotional stuff well. Every sad scene or crying scene was so painful to watch, but this meddling stuff came across much better. I hope I don't end up regretting saying this.

It is time for someone to spill this secret, even if it's just a small part of it. It is starting to feel like those awful clickbait stories online "You'll Never Guess What She Did When She Caught her Husband Cheating with the Best Man." You click through slides and ads, but the story really doesn't go anywhere, it just regurgitates really vague details and you are stuck flipping through each slide until you finally get to the end and it's usually not very satisfying.

I don't necessarily think it's regression. Around the same time that everyone was saying BC was showing growth, I mentioned that he has shown some growth in his more casual scenes, but whenever he needs to give more emotion, it comes across unintentionally funny. Bc needs some work and it's one of the downfalls of giving such green actors such heavy material, because we all get taken right out of the moment. The same is true for the Chelsea character. I think the way her whole love life is being written is a little ridiculous, but the actress isn't helping either.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I also agree with the weirdness in continuity and the progression of stories. We saw all the men gathered in Bill's office and nothing came of that. We saw no follow through of what that conversation was and why they would choose not to have that scene at all. At first, I thought they would flashback to it, but now I just think they wanted to maintain Martin's secret hidden from the audience for longer. Yet, you had all that cast together and you delivered nothing. It could have been quite the scene. Also, the cliffhanger with Ty and Kenny and now Sam and Kenny made me feel absolutely nothing. It just felt so beyond stupid that a teenager and a 30 year old (kidding) would interact with strangers in that way. At least, Samantha is out in a public place and who knows maybe Kenny asked her something, but I still didn't care. We just need to know the secret and I am hoping that the secret is actually layered and not as basic as I am starting to assume it might be. They played it up like it is something no one has guessed and it was going to be something. It seems more and more like it might not be that special.

Knots Landing
I'm watching on Plex, but I noticed something odd in episode 8 of season 2. When Karl explains that Michael is hyperkinetic, he asks Karen if she knows what it means and whatever Karen original says is dubbed over with "neurological." It is quite obvious because the flow of conversation is interrupted and the mouth doesn't match what is said. Is there some antiquated term for "neurological" that can be perceived as offensive today?

Knots Landing
Really minor and insignificant question, but I noticed the actor who plays Dave Culver on Dallas is on the episode of Knots Landing titled "Kristin." Interestingly, he mentions coming from Washington, but he isn't playing Dave. Pretty sure that Tom Fuccello had already appeared on Dallas by this time, so interesting to pair him with Kristin who is also from the Dallas-verse as a different character. As you all probably know, Priscilla Pointer, who also plays Pam's mom on Dallas portrayed a different character on Knots season one, but she wouldn't appear on Knots for another year or so. I also noticed she just passed, which was sad but also incredible to see she lived to see 100. I hope they were mostly healthy and peaceful.

We need things to move along with this Martin secret. The stop and go formula knocks a bit of the life out of it. I was a bit bored today, but will give it a proper rewatch later. I mean the most exciting part for me was Naomi's hair in the previews.

This Articulette mess is giving Xscape: Still Kickin' It vibes. Anita (Kandi) doesn't need this tour to be successful, because she already has money. The other band members are bitter because one of them left to seek their own solo success and also mad that she was always bossy and trying to control everything (Latocha). Here with go with the Articulette Strong again. No, Chelsea. You are not being followed... you pretty much live at Uptown.

Thanks everyone for your answers. Definitely seems like Abby was brought in for season 2 to stir the pot. From what I've seen so far, season 2 does have more of an interconnectedness between the episodes that was not really present in the first season. Abby to me is super unlikeable so far. She needs to rein in those kids. They annoy me through the tv screen, but it is fitting because she seems a bit absent. She's also already throwing herself at everyone's man.

It's just not authentic. Who nowadays naturally speaks that way? It is not an accent that is around today unless you are forcing it or playing a role. I would have preferred a watered down British accent from someone who has lived here for a long time.

I wondered the same thing and assumed that this Dr. Perkins must be somehow involved in the baby mess with Hayley. Either she is being paid off, bribed, manipulated, or something more sinister and she is in cahoots with Hayley for whatever reason. Otherwise, I don't get it either. Also, what is Hayley's end goal if the pregnancy is in fact not real. Hayley was supposedly 10 weeks pregnant when she was rushed to the hospital after her argument with Dani. Even if she were to get pregnant for real right now, there is no justifying the timeline...it will be obvious she lied. What is she hoping to do? Is this Dr. Perkins going to get her a baby. I also agree. It is getting a bit to ugly on Kat's part. Like I totally understand why she is angry, but to mess with you father's practice just to make your sister look bad is a touch extreme when Eva is not to blame for her father's infidelity and sister. She's also a snob and pretentious for someone who is supposed to be "good."
