Knots Landing
It seems to me that as soon as the Emmys and Golden Globes could get away with ignoring the nighttime soaps in terms of acting and, well, existing, they did. The GGs showed a little more respect. Both (particuarly the Emmys) also seemed to seek out as many nominees as possible from the prestigious shows (Hill Street Blues, Lou Grant, St. Elsewhere, L.A. Law, etc.) while mostly sticking to the usual suspects from the Big Four. Dallas -- Emmys: two nods for Outstanding Drama Series (for 1979-80 and 1980-81), two nods for Larry Hagman (79-80 and 80-81), one nod for Jim Davis (80-81), three nods for Barbara Bel Geddes (1977-79, 1979-80 and 1980-81; win in 1980) and one nod for Linda Gray (1980-81). Golden Globes: five nods for Best Television Series -- Drama (for 1979-1983), three nods for Larry (for 1980-1982), three nods for Barbara (for 1979-1981; win for 1981) and one nod each for Linda (for 1981) and Victoria Principal (for 1982). Dynasty -- Emmys: one nod for Outstanding Drama Series (1981-82); three nods for John Forsythe (1981-82, 1982-83 and 1983-84), one nod for Linda Evans (1982-83) and one nod for Joan Collins (1983-84); Golden Globes: six nods for Best Television Series -- Drama (for 1981-86, win for 1983), six nods for John (1981-86, wins for '82 and '83), five nods for Linda (1981-85, win for '81), six nods for Joan (1981-86, win for '82), one nod for John James (for '85) and one nod for Gordon Thompson (for '87). Knots -- Emmys: one nod for Michelle Lee (1981-82) and one nod for Julie Harris (1981-82). Golden Globes: one nod for William Devane (for '86). Falcon Crest -- Golden Globes: two nods for Jane Wyman (for '82 and '83, win for '83), one nod for Lorenzo Lamas (for '82) and one nod for Gina Lollobrigida (for '84). Flamingo Road -- Golden Globes: one nod for Morgan Fairchild (for '81). For the record: Dallas won four People's Choice Awards (Favorite TV Drama, in 1980-82, then Favorite Nighttime Dramatic Serial in '87), Dynasty won 10 (Linda Evans in 1982-86, Joan Collins in '85 -- tied with Linda -- and the show itself in 1984-87 -- the last one tied with Dallas) and The Colbys won one (in '86).

Knots Landing
I have similar feelings about the (also-mocked?) idea of Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal re-enacting Bobby and Pam's 1978 wedding in 1986. Hopefully this isn't too much of a spoiler: there will be more opportunities to see Knots characters in their youth.

All My Children Tribute Thread
Riding out a storm in my neck of the woods (southeastern North Dakota), I watched the first two episodes of the 1994 tornado week (July 25-26). It was my first time watching them all the way through since the original airing. I know Ruth had a bad tornado experience in her youth, but you think she'd be a little more poised amid a crisis. Thank goodness she and Joe weren't at Pine Valley Hospital at the time.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Most if not all of those people were based in New York/the East Coast, so that probably cut down on expenses.

The missed opportunities abound. They could have brought Douglas to town around 1991 with his longtime prep school buddy, Spencer Olson. Or in 1999 (as played by Victor Webster, allowing Nicholas "Nicky" Alamain a few more years in limbo before being reintroduced sometime in the mid-'00s).

One Life to Live Tribute Thread
Out of all the formats to dramatize the lead-up to, event and aftermath of a school shooting, I think a soap opera would be the most suitable. What would need to happen, however, is near-complete trust in the storytelling. Nothing ever goes completely as planned, but you would need a long-range plan and the commitment to ensure that little or nothing is getting skipped. You've also got to look holistically, including what @j swift mentioned, having characters confront each other about their opinions. This is not a storyline that's over and done within two weeks. It has to matter. (Oh, Agnes Nixon or Doug Marland, where are you when we need you?)

Erica's fame is a funny thing to measure. She spent years ascending in the modeling world, but didn't succeed at establishing herself in show business. For a few years, she succeeded as a magazine publisher, then definitely succeeded as an entreprenur. Along the way, her husbands increased in prominence. Also, of course, she's got her fame as a talk show hostess (Was The Cutting Edge strictly local? Could it be seen nationally, or at least in NYC?) and retroactive icon of her heyday. Did I miss anything? I can't quite compare Erica to one person, although I suppose Janice Dickinson would be the closest analogue in terms of modeling (I'm open to better suggestions). And Tina Brown for the Tempo years. Enchantment was likely following the lead of Elizabeth Taylor, Cher and Joan Collins' perfumes, but I personally think of it more along the lines of Jessica Alba and the Honest Company (a surprise and highly lucrative second act). The retroactive icon of her heyday ... I guess Erica's like every woman who's survived to give commentary for a pop culture documentary. Also, now that I'm writing this, I think there was a big missed opportunity not having Erica hook up with a rock star (he doesn't have to be British, but it wouldn't have hurt) during her modeling years.

To some degree or another, it goes all the way up to 1991. A few years back, Mary Crosby did an interview where she admitting wishing she had better capitalized on her fame. Seems like there were mutual missed opportunities on both sides.

GH: Classic Thread
And here's how the introduction played out in-universe: March 7, 1994 -- Damian wants to honor the nurses of GH in a public way. He learns about how Bobbie wants to revive the Nurses's Ball. Damian goes to Audrey wanting to underwrite the entire cost of the Nurse's Ball. Damian wants Bobbie to chair the event. March 9 -- Audrey asks Bobbie to chair the revived Nurse's Ball. Bobbie learns the money to underwrite the ball came from Damian. Bobbie confronts Damian telling him she is not for sale. Damian apologies and Bobbie does not want GH to suffer so she agrees to think about chairing the ball. Bobbie tells Tony that she wants to decline to chair the ball due to Damian's involvement. He thinks she should do it, as it would benefit GH. March 18 -- Lucy asks Audrey if she can co-chair the Nurse's Ball with Bobbie. Bobbie agrees to let Lucy help her with the Nurse's Ball. Lucy does have a good idea to bill the ball as a talent show. Lucy tells Damian that she just volunteered to co-chair the Nurse's Ball.

This reminds me that Vivian had only been on canvas for about two months at the time of the Forest Alamain reveal. Later in 1992, we'd get the Nicky is Carly & Lawrence's son stuff, but I wonder if they were danging some red herrings about John/Forrest being Vivian's son? Oh, good choice! And there was a prominent new male role available in 1991, Dimitri. Or was the character established before the Tale of Two Romans got started? Ah, either way, Drake would have done fine on AMC Oh, Miller-Boyett would have loved Drake. I also have to laugh at you mentioning MacGyver, since Drake and Richard Dean Anderson played kin on 1982's Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

It's worse in The Glass Inferno. In that book, Dan and Lorie are more pathetic. He makes trophies and other promotional materials and she's a never-was model. In the movie, they got some dignity, borrowed from The Tower and a pair of cut characters. An opposites attract pairing between a conservative-minded politican and a liberal woman, who are doomed because there's no way they're going to safely get out of the building in time.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Let's talk a little more about the Wired for Sound performances. According to a Soap Opera Digest blurb from 1982, the first was Judy Collins, followed by The B-52s. Bertie Higgins wasn't mentioned in the blurb, but YouTube has his June 8, 1982 appearance. SOD picks up with Ashford & Simpson and Maurice Gibb. And according to a July 5, 1982 issue of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Neil Sedaka was next (July 13), with Air Supply, The Waitresses and Quarterflash on the way. Plus, of course, Miss Jennifer Holiday. My questions are: did any of these happen before or after the summer of 1982 and did they actually help in attracting viewers?
