  1. I think I posted some synopses from SOD years ago, but from what I remember, they died in a plane crash. Shana was guilt-ridden because she was supposed to be on the plane too. She became determined to find out the truth, and I think she eventually found out that Cabot had unknowingly had something to do with it, which led to Cabot's "death," didn't it? Does anyone remember?

Yes your right about Shana's story . I always found Loving so bland and generic. But i did enjoy watching the episode. I guess it gave me a nostalgic feeling.

  2. Jessie was so bland and basic. I liked Simon and India they were fun and mischievous. Reva and HB played well off one another.  I like Larkin Malloy but i find Kyle dull. The stolen art story seems like a dud. GL was rudderless during this time. Not as good as Pam Long's second run. Or it's early 90's resurgence which ushered GL last golden age. Never seen this soft jazz closing. With the characters still interacting. I really liked it.

  3. I've been enjoying the ATWT episodes from 2000.The show isn't prefect but it's watchable and entertaining. The best story was the stalker story. Lilly and Holden story lacked direction. Jake naturally worked very well into the Oakdale canvas. It's a shame Jake was killed off only a couple of years later. John's and Camille's mentor relationship was great. I wished Andy's and Denise's story was written better none the less Scott DeFreitas and Cassandra Creech did an amazing job. Characters are a bit isolated in this era but it got worse in ATWT last years. Still i'll take ATWT from this era over Jean Passanante's.

  4. Good to see Alex and Zach still be close like Jennifer and Jesse. That's what I loved about ATWT. It seemed like they truly were extremely close offscreen as a cast.

I know! Seeing the pic of Jen and Jesse and now Alex and Zach, makes me miss ATWT even more

That group of extremely talent young actors always elevated the dreck Jeanie P wrote for them.

  5. 1986 HBS and GM were lively and interesting as Tom and Margo. While SH and ED were so stodgy. I loved seeing both Frannie,Marsha  and Kim having flashbacks of Doug. The amazing Elizabeth Hubbard gave a heartbreaking performance  Lisa was dancing with an old queen? oh it's Earl. Under Marland ATWT was so well written and so full of life. 1997 I loved Lucinda and Holden scenes locked in Lucy's wine cellar. One the best things from this era was Lucy and Holden finally burying the hatchet. By this point Lucy's hatred of all things Snyder was stale and played out.  I thought Emily's rape by Diego was overkill. I hated how after Mr. Marland death Emily became so neurotic. I liked Nikki and Ryder but the teens during this era never got great stories. ATWT missed a golden opportunity not bringing back Ryder's bio mom Joyce Lisa's arch nemesis. It's strange how Ryder was still a teen but both Andy and Paul were older.  FMB's run as EP started strong and quickly fizzled out.

  6. IMO ART Connor was vibrant, independent strong woman who came to Oakdale to get what was stolen from her by Lucinda. She did it marvelously completely making Lucinda looking like the biggest fool in Oakdale. As much as I loved what Connor did I felt bad for Lucinda. Thats more to do with the writing and the actors involved. After ART was replaced/Marland passed…..Connor became a weak, whining needy non business female pining for a man she really didn't need. She was fine on her own as a strong independent business woman.

Connor's triangle with Cal and Mark did a lot of damage to the character. I liked Susan Batten as Luna on OLTL. Firing AR-T and recasting Connor with SB was so stupid. AR-T brought something special to the role. SB looked lost while making awkward faces. Plus her thick southern accent often came out.

  7. If Goutman and Sheffer were so eager to bring Howarth (and his fanbase) to ATWT, that would have been one thing.  But I always believed they would have been better off creating a new character for him -- even one who, down the road, might turn out to have some surprising ties to established characters -- than to bring him in as a recast of a pivotal character in some attempt to make longtime fans care about him.  It's so cheap and obvious whenever a soap goes THAT route -- and IMO, it hardly ever works.

As for Darryl Crawford and everything else associated with the Carolyn Crawford story...you know, as much as I admire and respect Marland's body of work on this and other shows, I must admit, in hindsight, that that might have been the point where someone (either at P&G, or at CBS) needed to admit Marland was burning out.  Even Julie Poll admitted (years later, in some interview for SOD, I think) that Marland had changed his mind about the story's direction about halfway through, which was something he rarely did.

Someone needed to sit the man down for a discussion about his future with the show.  Maybe he needed to move over to one of P&G's other shows -- AW, perhaps, or even back to GL -- or maybe he needed just to stop working for awhile and then determine where to go next.  Who knows?  He had been working on his own soap, after all, so there were no guarantees he would have stayed with WT much longer, had he survived heart surgery.  Either way, though, I feel like Marland, by that point, had given WT everything he could and needed to move on.

Sadly there never was a worthy successor to the late Mr. Marland. I do agree he was burned out by the tail end of his run.

  8. I've been watching post Marland ATWT from 1993-96. ATWT  still had plenty of life. But there's a dullness and predictability. The best stuff from this period was Damian breathing some life to Holden's and Lilly's played out love story. the whole John vs Lisa saga. The plane crash with Damian, Margo and Sam. The introduction of Carly. John publicly humiliating Lisa during there lavish engagement party. The worst the boring Kasnoff family, The introductions of Zoe. Sarah,Diego, The whole convoluted Kingsley-Malta saga which ran for yrs. Emily's rape by Diego. All the soft core porn love scenes with Mark and Connor at the treehouse of sex. The Martin Chedwyn saga with Lisa. The teens were badly used and written out. Nikki Munson was the only one of the teens that managed to last 3 yrs. Paul and Dusty weren't just badly recast their personalities were completely changed too. Poor Andy was written out and never brought back. In hindsight maybe it was a good thing that Andy was never brought back. I did enjoy Mr. Sheffer's first year on ATWT.  But it was clear he had disdain for ATWT's rich and vast history.  Where the late Mr. Marland reveled in ATWT's rich and vast history.   The last 17 yrs of ATWT the quality started going downhill year after year.

  9. Carly has become a played out character. But she had so much potential in the early years. During Bob Guza last run Carly alongside Sonny and Jason ate up the show. Now Carly has been reduced to a Stepford Wife and Sonny apologist. At the time i actually liked the introduction of Carly. I also liked how Bobbie's backstory as a teen hooker was being used. I can't believe it's been 20 years, since Caroline Benson Bobbie's hellspawn first set foot in PC.

  10. Gunnar was a favorite of mine and loved Gunnar vs James story. I am surprised many didn't care for Gunnar. I am more shocked to hear CZ say that Henry(eww..) was a greater love to Barbara than Gunnar. She apparently didnt care for her pairing with Gunnar.

A flaming gay bearish Henry i never bought him with Katie, Vienna, or Babs. But i am glad Barbara did end up with someone at the end.

  11. The Dobson's were hit or miss on ATWT during their two runs. I find it strange since their run on GL was flawless from everything i've read. From what i've seen of Gunther i was not impressed. Were Barbara and Gunther popular? Which was worse The Mr. Big story or Barbara's past life? What other outlandish stories took place during this time?

  12. Santa Barbara is a hard soap for me to get into. But i have been enjoying the episodes from late 1989. I like the rivalry between Gina and Laura. I find Ethan hot but dull but he did have chemistry with Gina and Laura. Walker,Martinez,Born and  Carrington are mesmerizing to watch. The canvas is very small for an hour soap. The Capwell's lacked warmth as a family unite. It's strange watching a soap with only one core family. In 1990 Mack. Ric, Sasha, Laura, Bunny and Phyllis are gone. The revolving door of characters really hurt SB. Another World also had this problem. But they were still smart enough to hold on to characters like Cass, Felicia and Donna to just name a few.

  13. 2 more years of Abby the oldest goth chick on the planet rollerblading around the morgue. 2 more years of McGee getting fat then skinny again. 2 more years of the hottest petty officers getting murdered. My boy friend is a huge fan and forces me to watch.

  14. I was watching both GL and ATWT in 1990, come to think of it and GL was superb that year!

As depressing as ATWT was in '90 (Casey's last days were brutal!), I still think the writing was several cuts above any of today's daytime soaps.  I'd rather watch 1990's episodes than any of the four remaining soaps now.  In fact, I am.

Those years of ATWT were almost like. "Oh see how SERIOUS we are!" I missed the days of Kim's Stalker, and James back from the dead...(the first time) after that, it is as if Marland got caught up in his own reputation. A show should always be fun to watch, and fun does not have to be "dumb."  GL at that time was like "Hey, look, we're a soap and we're proud of it and we care going to trot out every soap convention in the book and write the hell out of it..enjoy!" ATWT was the dour sibling while GL was the fun one....(though the days my friend were numbered.)

Your assessment of ATWT and GL is dead on. Still the tail end of DM's ATWT is still vastly superior to present day soaps. ATWT and GL were on fire back in the early 1990's. In a couple of years there slow and steady decline would begin.
