Ratings from the 70's
Just read back through the pages here and it amazes me looking at all the ratings how all over the place they are. ABC seemed more patient with their soaps which paid off in the long run while NBC let AW and DAYS rot in the late 70s and CBS/P&G systemetically destroyed their soaps I guess due to timeslot changes and bad executive producer/head writer changes. A lot of short lived soaps that deeply interest me were doing a helluvah lot better than soaps still on today in various postings. The only other guess I have as to the ratings being dramatically all over the place is that more of the soaps had better quality back then so people were checking them all out. Sad to think by the time I started ratings were so stagnant it would never happen again. I truly wish ATWT and GL/OLTL and AMC had just dropped the hour format and done thirty minutes and hell if that failed then 15 minutes.

The EON scenes with Nancy and Serena/Josie sound epic. I wish those were available. On OLTL were DB and AP still playing Anna and Vinnie? It seems the show was definitely moving past the ethnic backgrounds and social stories they started with after reading 9 months of recap. Only Ed is even mentioned. No Carla.

One Life to Live Tribute Thread
I had read those years ago but forgot about them. Thanks for sharing again. It was interesting that the complaints of 1984 (which seems boring based on everything I have read and seen) were fixed by 1986 but by 1987 the O'Neill family was gone and they would just bring c-story families in and out for years. Then by 1988 they were into the flights of fancy as mentioned. I actually love the mix of the fantastical (Eterna and Mendorra) and the reality based stories (Carla and Billy Douglas) but I wish Rauch had kept the cast diverse (so much potential lost IMO in losing Blair Underwood and Lisa Carrington-that one scene with Tina/Bobby/Lisa just oozed chemistry for me) and at least SOME community/reality based stories intertwined with the over the top drama. Is that what happened to Schnessel? I have googled him multiple times over the years trying to find SOMETHING and was unable to. How sad. Does anyone know when he actually passed? Did he ever come to the studio, I have never seen anyone mention him in interviews or anything. He wrote some of my favorite scenes and stories outside of my time watching the show...thankful for YouTube!

Didn't Rauch remodel Llanfair multiple times? Did he just take things to far? I guess a lot of 1989 was filler but I still enjoyed it for what it was. We know RC was a big fan of the 80s and has the same problem today on DAYS (and when he was at OLTL) of basically filler and then climax.

1989 is one of my favorite years I have watched outside of "my era" and it just seems so fun with Eterna, the baby switch, the crown jewels, Tina and Cord wrestling convicts in an arena, the baby switch, Megan/Ruby, etc. I only found the B stories and cast boring but I guess the show was gettinf absurd. Can you share what SOD called them out on?

That was the first full interview I watched for Locher and after a rough beginning it was enjoyable. Tina and Gabrielle are my ultimate faves so I was most excited for them. I wish they had focused more on story points and less on Tonja's social media/politics talk. I had no idea that the random scene of Tina being admired by the natives of the falls actually consisted of...natives of the falls. I dont know if they actually dressed like that or what but I was shocked and that was a cool behind the scenes story.

Ratings From the 90's
Thanks Soapsuds! I didn't even realize ATWT was hitting #2 in the 90s. Really shows all the squandered potential by the end of the decade and just how good the shows were at one point.

What year are the 4th of July ratings from? OLTL was doing terrible! Actually so was AMC. DAYS and ATWT werw doing really well though. What was going on during this time?

This is like the ideal interview of what you would want them to say. I wish he would have this realization again. I really truly enjoyed early Hope/Liam/Steffy but after years and years of the same thing. Then he builds up Ally and Oliver and destroys that. Same with the Avants and Rick and Maya. They could have done years of story with Amber/Rick/Maya IMO. They don't keep any villains on the show without them being comic relief. So on and so forth.

What I would do to see this Mark Toland investigation on OLTL and the Phillip death on Y&R-which had way more going on than I imagined. I can't believe none of these episodes have been made available and are just sitting somewhere. They could air one episode with Phillio going over the cliff and then his funeral in an hour block. Smh.

Ratings from the 80's
Was the ratings success for GL based on Phillip/Beth/Mindy/Rick popularity and Reva? I am shocked how high those ratings are and wonder what could have been if they did not decimate the show. I was once super into GL history and nothing interests me from 1984-1989. It just sounds dreadful both the plotting and the casting. I wonder what could have been had they left things alone.

Oh so Phillip died in 1975, I always thought it was 1976. Maybe Bill Bell ran through the original story bible and was playing around with things before coming to a decision?

I would love to see the Mark Toland murder mystery on OLTL. Sounds like a true umbrella story as everyone seems involved from what little I know of the cast then. I had no idea Mark was blackmailing with Viki among other things before his death. The role of Mark was never recast so this is Tommy Lee Jones, right? Its nice to see more of Larry and Viki's friendship being prominent as well and I always wanted to see more of Julie too. I am so, so glad they killed Phillip off instead of Katherine on Y&R. I don't know where they were headed with Phillip getting close to Lorie and Jill marrying Phillip. I feel like this isnt well known and will soon be dropped. Hope to see the Kay/Brock/Jill/Phillop quad play out for a while though.

All My Children Tribute Thread
I started watching in 2006 so I was used to the Ryan focus but he dragged the show down for me from 2008 onwards. I loved Aiden and Greenlee together and then they ruined Aiden for him but MCE just shined as crazy Annie and adding her to the Chandlers was probably the only good thing about the last two years outside of the Hubbard family. Still a lot of lost potential and bad casting to me though. I hate ER was not back as Bianca (and I would have liked to see the added stakes and flashbacks with the history of JR and Bianca) and I never liked anyone playing Marissa. Then they wasted Frankie, Natalia and Brot while whoever played Randi never impressed me. I just watched the 1987 Chateau explosion episode. It looks like 1987 started out strong from the Angie/Jesse/Yvonne/Lester story into the explosion and then Mark's intervention. Was this a well received time for the show?

I am loving how complicated the Jill/Phillip/Kay/Brock story is and how juicy for Kay to goad her son into marrying her enemy and then send them to the cabin. I almost hate that this was not more of an ongoing story I feel like there could have been a lot of drama milked out of that. But they never even slept together did they since they were "siblings" years later?

Y&R: Old Articles
This is so unfortunate. Did he not like being on the show? Did they ever do anything with AL's Colleen and JT? Did they have chemistry? I was half watching in 2006 and 2007 (mainly just interested in Davetta's Lily and Drucilla at the time as I was young) but once I got into the show in 2008 I was sad that AL and DS were gone as Colleen and Lily and replaced with zero energy actresses. I also read that in 2002 the show wanted to hone in on the AA audience. Did the failure to build up Damon, keep Shemar Moore on as Malcolm and all the Victoria Rowell gossip just lead them to drop it? I know by 2008 you only had Lily, Devon, Roxanne, Neil, Karen and Tyra on every Wednesday with zero depth. They wasted Tonya Lee Williams her last several years, let VR go, wasted the Harmony character, etc.
