Looks like we'll be treated to more of Lauren singing :D

I haven't watched yet, but just from skimming... why does it seem like Traci is wearing the same dress in every episode from 1984!?

Lol, I just went back to the July 03 1984 ep and she is wearing something similar or possibly the same dress again. I feel like wardrobe were rationing outfits and told Beth here is your summer dress.

Only along the lines that she had a different attitude to when she was on Days.

At Y&R she decided to be 100% positive about her character, story, appearances, co-stars etc.

I guess going from front burner at Days to being marginalized was a humbling lesson for her.

Yeah I get the feeling it was Y&R or unemployment at that point.

I started the 1986 episodes and have worked myself up to episode 3396. (July 1986)

I can’t believe they got Susan Seaforth Hayes from Days and didn’t really used her properly from January until July. That’s quiet a disgrace tbh.

But at least the other storys are great

I was always under the impression Bell brought her on to just give her something to do and her hope was always to return to Days. So he didn't make her too important on Y&R in case she got the call back. She was basically there from the time she left Days until she returned. It seemed more like a favour than anything else.

Has SSH ever really talked about her time at Y&R

It was another solid fun episode overall (minus Danny and Lauren’s singing…haha) even from the few scenes I’ve seen of Danny and LIllibets Patty, I can definitely notice the more natural chemistry he had with her compared to Andrea Evans.

The Victor/Cora scenes really got to me. It’s nice to see a vulnerable Victor in denial about his mothers illness, and thinking she’s gonna live longer then expected. I liked the seeds being planted for Matt’s arrival, although I wonder if they could have just brought him on now while the Cora story was going on?

man, after that kiss Dina laid on John, I don’t blame Jill for being insecure. John didn’t seem like he totally rejected it either.

Honestly the more I see of Jill/John from 1984, the more I understand why so many viewers wanted Jill to take John to the cleaners in 1985/86. He neglected her and basically spent more time tending to Dina (who was still waivering between John and Eric) and Lindsay.

Even Ashley told John he was ignoring his wife and needed to make a decision about his marriage. I wish Bell had Jill throw this stuff in John's face more when they were getting divorced.

I received some more DVDs from the Y&R angel who sent me things in the past including that wonderful New Year's Eve 1985 with the Conga scene. :) I'll be uploading things as I go through the disks. The angel had Phillip III's death scene in English which I had been looking for for many years! It used to be on the website Soap Hunks and is finally online once again thanks to the angel!

It's an amazing scene. Tricia, Jeanne, and Jess really deserved Emmys for this. Hard to believe they could undo this with the stroke of a pen later.

It is great to see this in english after over 30 years. Thank you

Oh yes the unforgettable Kristen The Rapist story! I admit I would've liked a glimpse at that, maybe they could do it now on Peacock, They Have A Gay Icon EJ now

Plus they hinted Kristen was basically a sex slave at the Harem. Not sure they ever got explicit with it though

    Lol yeah

The chemistry between Will and James Scott’s EJ had a lot of fans suspecting that something was going to happen between them

It should have happened. EJ was twisted enough to use Will to get back at Sami and Will was head strong enough to go against his mother. It would have been fire works. It didn't have to be a romance (maybe in Will's head) no need to make people love or ship this couple. It should have been a dark story. They were going there with Kristen at the time, dark I mean.

@will81 @Paul Raven Bill Bell lost interest in Nathan when Shemar Moore blew up in popularity.

    9 hours ago, Soaplovers said:

Which is a shame because they had different personalities and places on the canvas.  I think had Nathan #1 not left, Bill Bell wouldn't have lost interest.

Why is Maura West not on this list?  She was a bad fit for the show no matter what character she played.

And Michelle Stafford would get an award for biggest letdown since she hasn't gotten a hold of the character since returning this past time.  Gina T.and Sandra Nelson had a more intense and scary vibe when they played Phyllis

Yeah it is a shame, and I agree. Had Purdee stayed he might have kept Nathan around and done better. Bell is on record as preferring to keep original actors. With only some minor exceptions (those that were maybe only in the role a few weeks or less) I feel the same was true with Leslie Brooks. She became nothing more than a reactionary character for Lorie, rather than a more fully fleshed out character. I even feel Deborah Adair's Jill was sidelined until Jill married John, but the character really became a centre piece again more so once Brenda came back.

I liked Michelle in her first run, sometimes a bit over the top though. My memory is of multiple episodes of her standing in her apartment spouting exposition all the time. Sandra was far better though, but the show just wasn't as strong. I wish Sandra had stayed to be honest. I did like Michelle though and I didn't mind Phyllis and Jack. Though I was barely watching by that point.

Yes that is puzzling but as we know from later, Bill kept the storylines very separate at times.

The sibling relationship between Liz and Bruce and Mark's relationship with the Fosters doesn't seem to be explored.

Same as Lorie's connection to Philip. When he died did she have any reaction?

With Lorie, yes. She was very upset and even asked Stu to keep all the details under wraps (he was apparently going to publish a story about Phillip's death) to protect Jill. She mourned him but seemed to get over it quick.

Bev said in the interview that it was after she joined AW initially as Iris.

She had a 3 month contract, as at first Iris was just there to be Alice's employer in NY until Alice and Steve reunited.

Then they decided to make Iris an ongoing character so Bev was offered a longterm contract.

That's when Conboy approached her about Y&R.

Bev first appeared on AW in Dec 72 so March 73 is when she would have been out of her initial contract and available for Y&R.

So it seems an original cast member. Maybe at that point Bill planned to introduce the Hendersons soon after the premiere but as he got into it, found there weren't needed. So in that case, the character of Regina could have been the one  offered to Beverlee.

Yeah I am pretty sure Bruce Henderson was introduced in May/Jun 1973, so that timeline would work. Regina might have been set for the same time or there abouts, since the Bruce/Jen affair was established around that time and Regina would have fit in well to that storyline. The writers strike might have also derailed the plans too. Not sure.

It is still so odd how Liz doesn't seem to have ever had anything to do with the Bruce/Jen affair, at least as far as I can tell. Seems right up her ally to give her bother an earful for breaking up a marriage. The whole paternity thing I get, since barely anyone knew about that, but by 1975 the affair was very much out in the open, yet no synopsis detail about Liz or the Foster's ever acknowledging it.

  9. 19 minutes ago, Paul Raven said:

Don't know if this has been discussed somewhere in the previous 800 pages but Beverlee McKinsey was offered a role on Y&R by John Conboy.

Bev was 38 at the time. So what role would have fit her?

Maybe Liz Foster based on her performance as Emma Ordway on AW where she played a drab older woman. Juliann McCarthy was 6 years older than Bev.

    Any thoughts?

Depends when they approached her. If the Henderson's were still part of the show when the offer was made, it could have been Regina Henderson.

I do wonder what Bev would have been like on a Bell show. I don't think this fact was ever brought up before. Thank you, very interesting to wonder what might have been.

  10. Although I agree that Shari was miscast, she wasn't an awful actress. She just didn't fit the part. To give her some leway, Bell's writing, especially for the Abbott's was off during this time, I felt he had somehow lost his way with characters and plot. So Shari + not the best writing = a bad time

I haven't re-checked but is Adam Lazarre White on this list? He was not a great Nathan recast. They hire a younger actor, then put a grey streak in his hair to make him more distinguished and give him a mid-life crises cheating storyline, which was so out of character. 1996 and 1997 most characters seemed off and I think most new characters or recasts were not great. Only a few stand out

Including Melinda Fee on that list is odd. She was a temp replacement and nothing more.

Might as well include Giselle McKenzie as Katherine and Robin Eisenman as Nikki. These people are brought in as placeholders only.

I would place Amelia at #1. She changed the character of Victoria completely and has never been able to achieve what Heather Tom brought to the role or really refashion Victoria into something else.

I'd add Jason Thompson as there is nothing of the loveable screw up in his portrayal. He would have been better as an Adam recast.

Gina made Phyllis more tolerable for me.

I'd include Kelly Kruger as Mac and Ryan Brown as Billy. Mac could still be part of the show had they gone with a better recast.

    Maybe Victoria Mallory as Leslie.

Robin Eisenman would make more sense than Melinda Fee. She at least was there for a few months, Melinda was there probably a couple of episodes at most. Though I didn't mind Robin. But yeah as you say both were temps

I would also add the other Victoria recast from 1997. Sarah Aldrich??? I can't remember her name, though she was barely there it was an official recast and she was terrible. Thankfully Heather came back

I was out exercising this morning, and my thoughts kept circling back to Victor and Nikki, and I realized I still have nagging questions...  (only on a soap forum could people understand that I would be out exercising and thinking of vintage '90s Young and the Restless 😂🤣)

I recently watched summer '96. Nikki was vulnerable with Victor and made it clear she was open to a reconciliation. IMO he seemed totally disinterested. Like, he had moved on from that chapter in his life. Hope straight-up asks Victor if he will remarry Nikki, and he replies, "I don't see that happening"

So I guess my question is - when does Victor re-discover his love for Nikki? Is it before Nikki is shot, or is it because Nikki is shot and on death's door?

Even up to around Jan or Feb 98, Nikki and Victor were not on good terms. After Nikki learned Diane wanted a baby and Victor wasn't really interested. Nikki turned up at a party Diane and Victor had thrown (it was some big deal but I can't remember what it was) and announced she and Joshua were planning to start a family, sticking it to Diane and ruining her party. Victor was furious with her. The shooting happened only a few weeks later and Victor was suddenly in love with her again.

  13. I'm dubious that any actors from the show are in the loop. Unless production is already slated to stop at a certain point, I doubt any of the actors know what the future holds.

I wouldn't be surprised if Days move is because they plan to drop the axe and try to push viewers to Beyond Salem and keep that going, and maybe try to drop some classics from the past as well. They could drop a years worth then expire those after several months and drop another years worth, if they can sort that rights and things out. This way they are keeping old school fans happy and Beyond Salem and annual Christmas movies being the consolation for current viewers of Days if it does get cancelled.

I used to believe this until Doug Davidson said he had already signed off for digital/streaming broadcast of Y&R and was suprised it wasn't being streamed already. I think Sony and the others already have this covered in terms of actors.

In terms of music, people act like every episode had pop music in it. The scores (unless they were sold) probably still belong to Sony and pop music can be replaced. Sony has a big catalogue and possibly still owns rights to many songs used in Days or Y&R anyway. Most pop songs used were not vital to the show and I doubt many would even know what they were missing. Y&R might be harder in the early years, but not that big a deal.

  16. My holy grail (besides the soaps) is the May 24, 1959 episode of Val Parnell's Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Chita Rivera performed America from West Side Story. The only known footage of her ever doing that number, or anything from WSS. This was while she was in the West End production. I know they have found a few episodes of the show, but not that one. All I have ever seen of her in the show is a split second from Dance at the Gym in London.

Agree that Eileen with several years of soap under her belt felt the time was right to make the break.

Just wondering whether recasting so soon was the right move?

Maybe it would have been better for Ashley to be off the canvas for a year or so to rest the character before a recast.

It was  a natural time as Ashley was now widowed and at the end of that story.

Do you think Ashley off the show was viable at that time?

On another note, I wonder  if Bill decided with Eileen leaving, to kill off Steven. Maybe he had other plans but thought it was better to give Brenda a fresh start.

Steven was really a nothing character and like Blade and then Joshua very bland who presented no real rivalry to the likes of Victor. And they each had a crazy ex coming out of the woodwork.

Ashley was barely used in Brenda's first year. Things kicked off more for her in 1990, and I think this worked better for Brenda. She had settled into the role without too much heavy lifting and her acting style was definitely more natural by then. I think she understood Ashley a lot more by that point too.

In terms of the character. I have always wondered who would have been a better recast. Marcy Walker?? She was only a couple years younger than Eileen and had the drier tone about her and slightly harder edge, but could also do fragile as well. I do think Ashley could have sustained a year or so off screen, if a return with a big name recast or if Eileen had changed her mind and wanted to return.

With Steven there are too many variables. The biggest for me is, when did Eileen give notice? She has always said it was a long period and I wonder if she gave notice when she signed her last contract. If that was June 1987, maybe Bell convinced her to stay because of the writers strike. She made a movie around Aug/Sep/Oct 88 and was off the show for two and a half weeks right before she was set to depart. Makes me think she had never intended to still be on the show that late in the year and they came to an agreement. If she gave notice at any point in 1987, then Bell married Ashley and Steven possibly with his death in mind. It is also possible Rod was never going to be there as long as he was and it bought him an extra year or so.

The other, did Bell always want Victor and Ashley to reconcile and marry. Did he envision the marriages of Jack/Nikki and Ashley/Victor long before it happened or did it fall in his lap and he took advantage of it. The issue is Bell plays both ways so it is difficult to say.

  18. In terms of Eileen. I think she wanted to move on. I don't think it was Cricket.....but I don't doubt Eileen and Terry had discussions about it and saw that it was time to move on, so it may have had a minor influence. I actually think Eileen's departure made Terry more unhappy. I think if she had stayed he might have tried harder to stick around and make it work, but in saying that he had been wanting out since 1985.

  19. 17 minutes ago, Paul Raven said:

Yes sorasing Nick so soon ultimately was short sighted.

Nick was born in 89 and was a  teen lead 6 years later and married by 97.

To fill the gap Billy was then sorased to be the new teen in 99 when again he was only 6 years old.

If the writers had been a bit more creative the show would be in better shape later on.

Maybe Matt Miller's son shows up in GC looking for his dad who has vanished. He stays with Victor and Nikki as a surrogate son and plays out the Nick stories.

Jennifer Foster was born in 1981 and could have returned in the mid to late 90's. She could have fallen for Brock's previously unknown son, thus setting Kay and Jill against each other in a variation of Mac/Billy.

Re Cricket : do we have any episode counts from that time to see if she actually led the appearance counts or did it just seem that way?

Agreed with the above. In terms of Cricket. Her appearances started going up in 1987 and even more so once Brenda was gone (probably just a coincidence)

We don't have enough from 1988 or 1989 to know for sure, but after the 87 counts I wouldn't be surprised. She was fourth for the year with 146 appearances of 246 eps. Lauralee was only behind Eric (148), Eileen (156) and Thom (156) for that year.

You are my twin on this topic 😂

Haha, yeah I was never a fan. I kept waiting for him to get better in the role but I think ultimately he was miscast. I think John Nelson-Alden should have held on to the role a few years and Nicholas could have been part of the late 90's teen set with some minor aging and with someone else in the role.

  21. 5 hours ago, kalbir said:

    Despite Cricket eating the show?

Lol, yeah. Even as a kid I would ignore her scenes, so I often forget she was in it so much. I pretty much skip her scenes on re-watch unless it is neccessary to view them. I did the same with Josh Morrow as Nicholas. I rarely paid attention to anything he was saying and only tuned into his scene partners, haha

In saying that I don't dislike Lauralee Bell, but Cricket is often annoying or worse, not interesting.
