  1. While skimming through some research material, I decided to use my university access to various databases for something useful. Soap Operas, haha I came across this and think it might be worth reading. It is a long dissertation done on As the World Turns which covers the years 1956 - 1978. I have only skimmed through, but it discusses the creation of the show, the various actors, stories, production and has interviews with producers and cast members. The woman who wrote this seemed to have unprecendented access to various materials and people from the show. It is a very, very long read, but hopefully there is something here you can enjoy and information you might like. out.pdf
  2. Yeah JMR passed in May 86 and Nancy took over until recently Lynda was part of the magazine Soap Bubble (which also did recaps) it folded in summer 76 and she began her syndicated column in October 76. Both also did editorial/info/Q&A columns too. Lynda did one and JMR two every week. I will post a couple here if you don't mind
  3. Thanks @FrenchFan For adding more synopsis. Great to see June up as it is the first month Jon-Michael Reed began his weekly columns. For those following along, I am sure we all know about the tumblr site that has collected JMR's weekly recaps. I actually found the first recap which was a week earlier and covered June 7 - 11 1976, and I found a slightly longer version of the second weeks recap, with an extra line of synopsis for most of the soaps covered.
  4. Yeah I had so many Daytime TV magazines and others like SOD that got ruined some time ago. That is why I am being more protective and trying to get them scanned, as insurance, haha. Daily TV Serials is great too as Jon-Michael Reed really loves soaps and takes them seriously enough as well.
  5. Bell and Alden were writing the show when that happened. It was just before he left.
  6. I got some Daytime TV magazines from 73/74. I haven't gone through them properly yet and they join the pile of 70's magazines I have yet to scan, but at a quick glance I have some cast information to share. In both the Sep and Nov 1973 issues Dorothy Adams is listed as Ma Henderson from the end of June 1973, which matches with Bruce Henderson arriving to town in June as well. I assume this was for the Liz cancer scare storyline which I assume took up most of the summer since there were so many pre-emptions due to Watergate and a writers strike as well. I think the Jennifer/Bruce affair story may have started around this time too (Bryna Laub in her early 74 synopsis suggests they reunited the previous summer). In the June 1974 issue Robert Clary's last airdate is listed as March 22, 1974 and the actor playing his killer is listed as Peter Maxmillian but no character name given. So Clary was on for one year Mar 26, 1973 - Mar 22, 1974 and I guess Peter Maxmillian aired most likely the week of Mar 18??? but not confirmed. Depends how long between the time Pierre was injured and when he passed I guess. Tom Selleck is also listed as Jed Andrews in that issue Also one of the Daytime TV issues covers the debut of Y&R, though there is nothing too exciting there I will try to get it scanned soon I have a backlog of magazines to get up (including SOD 91 - 96) and I also bought more Daily TV Serials Magazines and a few Rona Barrett Daytimers issues as well so hopefully I will get there eventually now that I am on holidays.
  7. Definitely. Reversing it was even worse.
  8. There is definitely an upswing in late 97 which was around the time Alden became co-HW with Bell. 1998 and 1999 were solid years, but I am almost certain Alden was pressured by the Sony brass to scandalise the show more and do more Days/Melrose Place type stories, which lead to the sperm caper story and a massive drop in ratings in 2000, which then lead to her taking on Trent Jones as a co-HW. Within a couple years Jack Smith was back and began taking over. 02/03 as Smith had barged his way in we got Chris being raped by Paul (or not really, or maybe) Olivia and Brad's affair on a cancer ridden Ashley, Sharon making the moves on Victor, which honestly was the beginning of the end of that character, and Jill and Kay becoming mother/daughter. In my mind Jack Smith was the reason Y&R began falling apart, and most likely Alden and Ed Scott being around helped slow the destruction down somewhat. I think by 2002 Bell had little to no control over either Y&R or B&B, as I feel both shows were doomed by that point. Bell even lost his Senior Exec title by 2004 and became a co-exec producer with Jack Smith. I don't believe for a second this was something Bell would have willingly gone along with.
  9. Exact same, and I mean 100% I always thought Morrow was miscast and I also felt Bell never really understood Nick and the potential he had. Anytime I watched a scene with Morrow I tuned him out completely and only listened to his scene partner (usually Sharon Case) We also had the end of Sheila, Scott, Traci (she was back here and there but had no real story anymore) and Lauren. And as we moved into 94/95 there were too many stories that were not working and characters who felt off. I have said multiple times but the Vietnam story belonged to John not Jack and Luan should have been battling Jill while Jack and Keemo fought over Mari-Jo. Then we have Victoria who hated sex suddenly deciding to pose nude for a men's magazine, Ashley and the evil twin, Mamie being humiliated and sent packing, Malcolm raping Dru but he's still a heartthrob and a great guy cause he didn't know she didn't want it, and they de-age Nathan only to give him a mid life crises storyline. Probably the big draw for me back then was Phyllis. I can't say I loved Chris and Paul together though.
  10. Yeah I would say May 2002 is the actual end of the Silver age for me, as Jack Smith became a co-HW in June 2002, so my end point is only 6 months off yours. @YRfan23 I'd say Cassie's death could end the bronze age and push the show into the dark ages. I think that happened in May 2006, so not too far past LML becoming co-HW which I think was Feb 2006.
  11. True, though I am not aware of that story as I stopped watching entirely in 2005 or 2006. Whenever Cassie died and the Phick affair was happening. Actually I did see Ashley's miscarriage that was caused by Adam, whenever that was, but that was more curiosity, as everyone was talking about how disgusting they thought the whole thing was. 2007 onwards I consider the dark ages of the show, I have only heard people on these boards discuss it. Kay Alden was well and truly gone by then and Ed Scott also was out the door for the second time. Making 2006 the last year anyone in the writing or production team had any real connection to the Bell years. 73-94 (Golden Age) 94-02 (Silver Age) 02-06 (Bronze Age)
  12. Lol, I have watched that ep multiple times and never once recognised her. Thanks for that. I know there was a character named Rebecca, I assume she played her, as Kathy is never mentioned in synopsis during the cult story. Though we could just say it was Kathy and she changed her name. I am fairly certain Rebecca and Paul slept together as part of the cult story, so maybe this is where Doug and Cindy fell in love, awwwwwww. Haha
  13. I didn't actually know she was in the cult, I am guessing she wasn't playing Kathy but a different character, but I am not sure
  14. Yes, she also played Kathy Bruder in 1980, the girl who stole Victor's car and introduced the Newman's to the show. I think her 1980 appearance was when she and Doug first met
  15. Yeah no worries, will upload shortly @BoldRestless Uploaded the clip. Added it to clips 1987 and is labelled as June 25 1987, although it may have been June 26 (most likely was)
  16. No I don't have the full episode, just the 8 minute clip that has been floating around
  17. Yep agreed, the one I put up should be June 16 by the sounds of it. Yeah it is a bit confusing with the guides. Thanks for uploading those eps. Those ep #'s seem accurate, I know 1987 starts with #3510 and ends with #3755 according to the Bill Bell catalogue/script archive I linked to previously. @BoldRestless Yeah the first ep is definitely June 11, as it carries over from the previous day of Nikki's video (We see this in the vault clips uploaded with a much longer sequence with flashbacks and ending with Jack arriving at the ranch) The last few minutes are repeated on Jun 11 with Jack arriving prior to the opening theme. The next has to be Jun 12 since it carries on from Jun 11. The ep you have as Jun 15 seems right, it feels like Brad interrupting Danny and Lauren was probably at the end of Jun 12 (or maybe not since it is the next day) and maybe picked up on June 15 and is part of the first 5 -7 minutes missing from the episode prior to the opening theme. That ep starts after the intro. I think June 10 was also available as part of the GenoaCityGuy clips as I had a 1min clip of Jill welcoming Ashley back to Jabot, but I have since lost it
  18. Jess Walton took over the role of Jill from Brenda Dickson in 1987 and remains in the role to this day. She is semi-retired though and doesn't appear too often Although we don't know exactly what happened. The official word is Bill Bell wasn't happy with the way Brenda was playing the part and fired her.
  19. She had her daughter July 11, 1995
  20. More info on writers for Y&R for those who want it from newspaper article May 22, 1978. So Elizabeth Harrower was with Y&R at least by 1978. I am guessing she left either late 78 or early 79 to HW Days. I am pretty confident Jack Smith joined in 79 as Kay Alden mentions in an interview from that year the only writers of the show are herself, Bell and one other.
  21. The other thing I looked into was head writers post Bill Bell. What I have found so far goes like this Kay Alden: July 1998 - Aug 2000 Kay Alden & Trent Jones: Aug 2000 - June 2002 Kay Alden, Trent Jones & John (Jack) F. Smith: July 2002 - Aug 2004 This isn't listed as such anywhere. But I believe it is correct I believe after this it was Alden and Smith until LML came on in Feb 2006. Alden and Smith were demoted in Dec 2006 and I think Alden was pretty much gone at this point. Also interesting that Smith became co-exec producer in 2003 with David Shaughnessy. By Feb 2004 Bill Bell lost his Senior Exec Producer title and became a co-exec with Smith (Shaugnessy was out) Bell's credit was removed the day after he died. For some reason Jack Smith stepped down as Exec Producer in 2006 and LML stepped in and then in affect fired him and Alden. I hadn't realised after Ed Scott left the show in Dec 2001, he returned as a supervising producer between 2004 - 2007. So 2006/07 really was the end of an era for Y&R. Alden, Smith and Ed Scott all gone. Oh right, cool, thanks. Yeah I doubt she appeared again after this since she had other projects going on. I think for sure her contract status was cooked by Feb 92 and she was recurring after that with probably only that one last apperance
  22. Not sure if I shared this before a newspaper article from May 19, 1990. I checked the 1990 eps we have. Chester last appears in those as Nina's lawyer when she wants to buy the Chancellor mansion. I think he appeared in the June 7, 1990 ep. So June was probably his last appearance. Seems Todd Curtis (Skip Evans) was taken off contract around the same time. I found a Feb 26, 1992 Y&R synopsis on Google groups that mentions Leanna and Jack. I checked the 1992 eps we have, the next credit list is March 6 and Barbara is nowhere to be found. I wonder if Feb 26 was her last date. Barbara made a movie with Lisa Rinna called Robot Wars which began filming in Tex and Los Angeles between Mar - May 1992. So I am betting Feb 92 was her last appearance. I have also looked into Beth Maitland. I know I have listed this before, but this seems to be the most definitive of her contract status and appearances pre Nov 96 (when the soap central daily synopsis start) Jun 82 - June 87 (On Contract) Beth chose to leave this time around and had no plans to return Nov 87 - Nov 89 (On Contract) Beth was asked to come back to wrap up Traci's story. She had agreed to a few weeks, but before she returned she signed a one year contract that extended to two. She made an appearance Dec 22, 1989 but had definitely left the show by this point Sep 90 - Aug 91 (Recurring) Beth returned on a recurring basis initially Sep 91 - Aug 92 (On Contract) Beth signed a three year contract, but was taken off contract a year into it. Don't believe she was ever on contract again, during the Bell years anyway. Aug 92 - Jun 93 (Recurring) Beth made a few appearances during the remainder of 1992, but was back more prominently from Jan 1993. This was when Brad did the whole 30 day reconciliation trial Dec 93 (Recurring) Beth was more like a guest star Feb 94 - Aug 94 (Recurring) This was very off and on. Traci and Steve were back and forth from New York to Genoa City for Ashley and Blade's wedding, Brad wanting Colleen and Brad's heart attack. This really was the end of Traci under Bill Bell (IMO) Feb 95 - Apr 95 (Recurring) Almost a repeat, comes for a wedding (Jack and Luan's) stays for a heart attack (John's) Again Traci wonders if there is hope for her and Brad, but ends up heading off. At this point Traci really only returns to support other characters stories Apr 96 - May 96 (Recurring) Pretty much a guest star appearance when Dina came back. Yeah I did and found it confusing, haha. If need be happy to have the ep removed and re-labelled, or keep as is. Let me know what you come up with
  23. I do have the episode where Phillip is drunk driving after the press party and is arrested. I will upload. I have the other genocityguy eps too, but I was missing stuff so thanks for putting all these up I had the ep as June 15, and the others as June 10, 11 & 12. But happy to follow your dates. I will upload now
