That's the big question, some remember Halsey in the role when Jill got hired, others remember Sean. Halsey wasn't mentioned in the press until Aug, the same time Deb Adair was announced as the new Jill. There is no mention of Sean Garrison at all that I could find, but Halsey is not mentioned at all in May/Jun either.

Yeah he was the character with the least development. Greg also never drove much story until Hauser was in the role. Jim Houghton had the Gwen Sherman story which I don't think was a major one at the time, or if it was, it was the only one he had and when Houghton left after three years, I don't know that Greg was that important for the show, I mean there was a six month gap before Brian Kerwin came on, so was Greg really all that missed? Brian, who was barely there and played out only the Euthenasia story which he was supporting in probably didn't make much impact. Then the character was off screen for another six months. I am guessing by 1977 the idea of changing Greg may not have seemed like such a big deal. Viewers probably weren't that attached to him.

I always thought the same of David as Snapper and if anything David should have been Greg. I think Wings had more the attitude of Snapper. Just watching that clip you see it, Hauser looks like the older brother, is dark and gloomy more like Espy's Snapper and David is just a relaxed happy go lucky guy. And maybe that influenced things. They lost the darker moodier Foster boy when Espy left. Maybe Bell and Conboy just decided to try to switch them. That seems to be what viewers essentially got during Hauser's time on the show. In terms of his looks, it is interesting, as Conboy was pretty serious about his cast being young and beautiful. In general that is what Conboy hired, so I can't really understand it either. Interesting point about the anti-hero stuff in the 70's. I would be willing to buy that being part of his casting for sure.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
While skimming through some research material, I decided to use my university access to various databases for something useful. Soap Operas, haha I came across this and think it might be worth reading. It is a long dissertation done on As the World Turns which covers the years 1956 - 1978. I have only skimmed through, but it discusses the creation of the show, the various actors, stories, production and has interviews with producers and cast members. The woman who wrote this seemed to have unprecendented access to various materials and people from the show. It is a very, very long read, but hopefully there is something here you can enjoy and information you might like. out.pdf

Look into the past - 1975
Yeah JMR passed in May 86 and Nancy took over until recently Lynda was part of the magazine Soap Bubble (which also did recaps) it folded in summer 76 and she began her syndicated column in October 76. Both also did editorial/info/Q&A columns too. Lynda did one and JMR two every week. I will post a couple here if you don't mind

Thanks @FrenchFan For adding more synopsis. Great to see June up as it is the first month Jon-Michael Reed began his weekly columns. For those following along, I am sure we all know about the tumblr site that has collected JMR's weekly recaps. I actually found the first recap which was a week earlier and covered June 7 - 11 1976, and I found a slightly longer version of the second weeks recap, with an extra line of synopsis for most of the soaps covered.

Yeah I had so many Daytime TV magazines and others like SOD that got ruined some time ago. That is why I am being more protective and trying to get them scanned, as insurance, haha. Daily TV Serials is great too as Jon-Michael Reed really loves soaps and takes them seriously enough as well.

I got some Daytime TV magazines from 73/74. I haven't gone through them properly yet and they join the pile of 70's magazines I have yet to scan, but at a quick glance I have some cast information to share. In both the Sep and Nov 1973 issues Dorothy Adams is listed as Ma Henderson from the end of June 1973, which matches with Bruce Henderson arriving to town in June as well. I assume this was for the Liz cancer scare storyline which I assume took up most of the summer since there were so many pre-emptions due to Watergate and a writers strike as well. I think the Jennifer/Bruce affair story may have started around this time too (Bryna Laub in her early 74 synopsis suggests they reunited the previous summer). In the June 1974 issue Robert Clary's last airdate is listed as March 22, 1974 and the actor playing his killer is listed as Peter Maxmillian but no character name given. So Clary was on for one year Mar 26, 1973 - Mar 22, 1974 and I guess Peter Maxmillian aired most likely the week of Mar 18??? but not confirmed. Depends how long between the time Pierre was injured and when he passed I guess. Tom Selleck is also listed as Jed Andrews in that issue Also one of the Daytime TV issues covers the debut of Y&R, though there is nothing too exciting there I will try to get it scanned soon I have a backlog of magazines to get up (including SOD 91 - 96) and I also bought more Daily TV Serials Magazines and a few Rona Barrett Daytimers issues as well so hopefully I will get there eventually now that I am on holidays.

There is definitely an upswing in late 97 which was around the time Alden became co-HW with Bell. 1998 and 1999 were solid years, but I am almost certain Alden was pressured by the Sony brass to scandalise the show more and do more Days/Melrose Place type stories, which lead to the sperm caper story and a massive drop in ratings in 2000, which then lead to her taking on Trent Jones as a co-HW. Within a couple years Jack Smith was back and began taking over. 02/03 as Smith had barged his way in we got Chris being raped by Paul (or not really, or maybe) Olivia and Brad's affair on a cancer ridden Ashley, Sharon making the moves on Victor, which honestly was the beginning of the end of that character, and Jill and Kay becoming mother/daughter. In my mind Jack Smith was the reason Y&R began falling apart, and most likely Alden and Ed Scott being around helped slow the destruction down somewhat. I think by 2002 Bell had little to no control over either Y&R or B&B, as I feel both shows were doomed by that point. Bell even lost his Senior Exec title by 2004 and became a co-exec producer with Jack Smith. I don't believe for a second this was something Bell would have willingly gone along with.

Exact same, and I mean 100% I always thought Morrow was miscast and I also felt Bell never really understood Nick and the potential he had. Anytime I watched a scene with Morrow I tuned him out completely and only listened to his scene partner (usually Sharon Case) We also had the end of Sheila, Scott, Traci (she was back here and there but had no real story anymore) and Lauren. And as we moved into 94/95 there were too many stories that were not working and characters who felt off. I have said multiple times but the Vietnam story belonged to John not Jack and Luan should have been battling Jill while Jack and Keemo fought over Mari-Jo. Then we have Victoria who hated sex suddenly deciding to pose nude for a men's magazine, Ashley and the evil twin, Mamie being humiliated and sent packing, Malcolm raping Dru but he's still a heartthrob and a great guy cause he didn't know she didn't want it, and they de-age Nathan only to give him a mid life crises storyline. Probably the big draw for me back then was Phyllis. I can't say I loved Chris and Paul together though.
