The Politics Thread
Politico let someone who clearly hates libertarianism and more than likely Daddy Paul get some kicks in on the libertarian "ascendancy." The end is especially satisfying. http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/10/rand-paul-2016-libertarianism-213265

The Walking Dead: Discussion Thread
My DVR erased most of the Walking Dead and Talking Dead stuff I had on there from the last few weeks (since the FTWD finale, which I did manage to watch). I feel like the universe is telling me something, and I'm just going to drop the show for a while, after barely getting through the back half of last season anyway.

I don't know if I felt it was inappropriate, but I guess some may have. The main stumbling block was his love for Katie. Bernice is probably about 10-15 years older than Andy. I do think they have chemistry. Today's scenes were very tender and sweet, and her scene with Lawrence was heartbreaking. The whole thing reminds me of an old MGM picture with Joan Crawford. I hated the Aaron scene today. The show is so horribly exploitive toward self-harm and suicide. They make it into nothing more than tacky melodrama and a plot point. It's becoming offensive. The writing for Diane and Doug was AWFUL. I hate that the show has no trust in viewers and is trying to manipulate us to pity Chas and Aaron. Too many stories are about plot and the characters are losing all identity.- All My Children Tribute Thread

HBS nearly left in 1988, while she was pregnant (there were "goodbye Hilary" type articles in SOD), but Calhoun convinced her to stay as I think she had flexible hours or could bring her baby to work (did he play Adam?). When Calhoun left in 1989, Laurie Caso supposedly did not have the same flexibility toward HBS, and she left. I thought Ellen was very good in her first run as Margo. It was when she came back that the character became so shrill and unlikeable to me - starting around that awful PTSD story in early 1996. I do think Calhoun and Marland were the better team, although what I've seen of 1988, 1989, and 1990 (Caso's first full year I guess) are probably the time of Marland's run I feel least involved with. In spite of the Carolyn Crawford stringalong and a few dud new characters, I think 1991 and 1992 were pretty good rebuilding years for the show, and 1993 could have been a good year too if so many terrible things hadn't happened offcamera.- All My Children Tribute Thread
I didn't know they used music beyond the AMC theme for the closing credits. Is this Nina Southern? She's not a bad actress at all - she even kind of looks like Gillian Spencer - but it's so jarring.- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
Well, if anyone wants to know, some soap site decided to spoil who shot Robert. I will tell you privately.- All My Children Tribute Thread
Wait - were they trying to say Julie and Robin were the same age? Seriously? I know it's been discussed here before, but did they fire Stephanie Winters? I think she's really good here. I can't think of an actress who looks less like Taylor Miller than this Nina. No wonder fans had a hard time getting used to it. Is this 1985 or should it be 1986? Nice to see more of Edna. Nice chest hair, Charlie. You can tell this is the '80s...- EastEnders: Discussion Thread
I wouldn't be surprised. I keep forgetting she's on the show. I have a feeling they may only still have her so she can sleep with Vincent.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread

The Eastenders scenes with Ben and Kathy went about how I expected (strong work from Harry Reid, decent enough work from Gillian Taylforth, mediocre-to-poor, timid writing). Still, I have to complain… - It would be easy for me to make Jay a saint, when actually he’s a 21-year old who easily gets fed up, especially with someone as volatile as Ben. With that said, I have a difficult time believing his only reaction to Ben being angry about Kathy’s lies was that he’d be thrilled if his parents came back from the dead (which, as Abi pointed out, is laughable), and dismissing Ben’s pain as just being in a “psycho” mood. I guess we had to see Ben isolated yet again, so we could see him lean on Kathy. Lazy writing. And yet again, for all the huffing and puffing about Sharon being “Ma Mitchell,” I don’t get the impression she gives two [!@#$%^&*]. - Perhaps the show will talk about this later on, but there was a whole lot of a whitewashing of Ben’s childhood in order to make this into “Ben hated himself for not conforming to Walford norms.” It wasn’t just about Ben falling apart because of the shunning of singing and dancing - he was physically and mentally abused by Phil’s girlfriend Stella for an extended period of time. Not even getting into Phil’s own years of child abuse, since Phil can do whatever he wants. - “I hate myself more than you could ever hate me” is a rotting turd of a line, and if anyone ever said that to me, I would shoot them out of a cannon. - Ben’s self-hatred and jagged coming out should have provoked more than “I told Phil you were gay” (which should have angered Ben as he likely would have taken that as another reason Phil was so ashamed of him) and, “whatever you are doesn’t matter.” Clearly it DOES matter to him, given what an absolute wreck he is as a person. Generic “you be you” platitudes can be saved for a less emotionally fraught period, surely? And is it deliberate that the closest to open acceptance by a relative is from someone who is conning him? Is this supposed to make us be more admiring of Phil’s “you make me sick and I might hit you or strand you naked in the road, but if you do everything I say I might tolerate you” rulebook of parenting? - Is all this being done to yet again make Ben into Phil’s foot soldier? Kathy is fairly obviously manipulating Ben for whatever is going on with that boring old man she’s married to, while Phil’s own part in all of this is mitigated because he’s off, I don’t know, being tortured by cold oatmeal and marathons of Are You Being Served Again? - Why is this story so rushed? Why did Ian and Ben have to get over their anger so quickly? If they get angry over the lies she’s telling with Gavin, then it will just overshadow the more compelling confusion and hurt they should have felt for a longer period of time. Are we in for weeks or months of Jane mean-mugging in self-righteousness and Kathy attempting to look “scared” of the latest Archie Mitchell knockoff? Sorry, that wasn’t supposed to go on so much… Anyway, at least the acting was good.- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread

Someone has been uploading, unlisted, some AMC 1990 episodes. Here's the playlist for one batch of them.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
This playlist also has an October 1988 episode I hadn't seen elsewhere. They have some January 1990 ones too that haven't been uploaded anywhere else (yet), although that's a year ahead of where you are so you may not want to watch. But you may want to download or something in case the videos get zapped.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I never knew she was with Tom. I think she was also with David Forsyth. I thought there was more November-January stuff around. Maybe it will pop up someday.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I think that was it, yes. If you want to see a few more episodes between that large November/December and February gap, Munecojim has a few others. There are also two unlisted episodes in this playlist. patc2000 has the Christmas episode for that year. I believe Rosemary was a retcon. I totally understand why you'd invest in the Jackson story. You definitely weren't alone in that. I agree about the current show. I just yawn through (or get angry through )anything with the Robert shooting or the Debbie/Ross/Pete mess. The other stories have their moments but could be better. If it makes you feel any better, the outgoing producer insists the remaining months of 2015 will not be about crime and drugs, because Emmerdale isn't that type of show. We'll see... My channel is so erratic as I don't upload consecutively, but I've been putting some January 1997 episodes up lately that you might enjoy. They remind me of what you've described.- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I don't think they did enough to have Jackson get proper treatment and mental care before making his decision. I think they wanted the drama of Aaron suffering and isolated so they could have his self-harm story, and it came across as him being emotionally abused and manipulated by Jackson and his mother. I just thought it was crass. But if you liked the story I don't want to take that away from you. A lot of people did like it. Of the current stories is there one you think isn't too bad, or do they all bother you?- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I agree, but that's how it's been with Emmerdale for a long enough time now that until I get angry and quit watching again (as I did around the time they killed off Viv and Terry and the offensive Jackson story began), I try to push through a lot of the dross. It's not easy, but the Laurel stuff and stuff like Leyla and Tracy using Eric's !@#$%^&*] ways to pretend he's part of a big party trick - it was really compelling or worked for me. I can see why it wouldn't for others. - Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
