That was a very good read - I'm glad the person didn't seem to be an [!@#$%^&*], as many Academy voters are in these writeups. I've heard enough praise for Richard E Grant the last week that I wonder if he's going to end up winning.

That was interesting. I'm glad to see someone talking in more detail about the 1937 film, which is usually all but ignored. It's also interesting to read about how male-identified the new version is because I've seen so much focus in recent times on Bradley Cooper, how unfair everyone has been to him, how he deserves to win for Best Actor because he was the true "transformation" of the category, and so on. It feels like this has become more and more of an open vanity project for him, with Gaga left in the dust.

The Media/Journalism Thread
The thing with these channels is they're so damn po-faced, wearing the cloak of America's conscience and telling us how brave and special they are because Trump yells about them. They don't care. They don't care about the people who work for them who are in harm's way, and they certainly don't care about the public. Jeff Zucker openly gloated about how much Trump has done for him and his network. And am I supposed to believe that smirking Mika and her windbag right wing boyfriend Joe actually have a problem with Trump beyond his dumping them and publicly humiliating them? If these channels were open about being tabloid features, I'd at least admire their honesty. Instead they roll around in the dirt and only wash themselves off long enough to beg for validation. You can't have it both ways.

The Media/Journalism Thread
CNN hates America and they hate us, like most of the media does. They only want money. That's why I will never give them my time. I am not even watching their New Year's Eve stuff anymore, aside from one or two minutes at the countdown. That's the best I bother with.

Jeff Zucker boasted about how much Trump has done for them. They've only ever pretended to dislike him. It's one of many reasons I avoid that network.

UK soap promos have had excellent promos but many times the stories are nowhere near as good. Here are the two strongest examples of good promo [!@#$%^&*] story. There's also this promo, which is just...hilarious, and completely out of proportion with anything that actually happened onscreen, but Julie Goodyear sells it.- The Politics Thread

I think someone here already said this a few months ago but many obituaries of women are inherently misogynist - like when Zsa Zsa Gabor died and countless obituaries were just interested in saying she was the first Kardashian.- The Politics Thread
It sounds like there is genuine anti-Semitism and bullying from the extreme left that has a lot of power in Labour now, so I can see why MPs are now leaving, but some of the MPs who are leaving also sound like they are deluded and desperate for attention and some vague glimpse of power.- The Politics Thread

Mika and Joe are about as liberal as Roy Cohn. It was likely this guy, not AOC, who stopped Amazon. It's just that nobody wants to [!@#$%^&*] him, the way Joe likely does AOC, and she doesn't get them clicks and wagging tongues, the way that AOC does, so they ignore him. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/05/nyregion/michael-gianaris-amazon.html The sheer desperation of the media to use her name for relevance is astonishing. I think that's what she meant, yes. I was just surprised she even thanked him for that as it was crumbs. My main memory was having to sit through Terri Conn and Daniel Cosgrove as Lisa and Don (and it still annoys me they remembered Don THEN but didn't mention him after Nancy died).
