Kim was excellent as Nola. She deserved more credit than she got.

As if this year doesn't become more and more bizarre and unsettling. (this is loud)- The Black Lives Matter Thread
This is one of the best recent examples of the perils of Twitter trying to play Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew - two men were falsely accused, and one was doxxed.- The Media/Journalism Thread
I'm seeing a lot of spin that the NYT is anti-Semetic and are putting this man and Bari Weiss up as targets for being Jewish (never mind that Weiss put HERSELF all over this). When will Ben Shapiro and other far right types realize they are the ones encouraging anti-Semitism?- The Black Lives Matter Thread

We're back to the hells of 2004-2006. I'm already seeing "don't out him, don't be homophobic," so I know how this will go. He's a horrible man, and the truth is he was always a horrible man, long before Trump. If he uses this to get sympathy I will retch.- Racism and racial representation on soaps
Hollyoaks' representation of the black community has tended to be very shaky, generally keeping the characters in their own bubbles and having questionable storylines that no one seems to take much notice of in terms of racial dynamics. They do at least try for diversity, but it never goes right. Kudos to her for speaking out, as I know she's putting her whole career on the line.- The Politics Thread
I keep seeing some say "it's not fair to question, they're impartial!" to try to shame, but Trump questioned these numbers for years and no one cared. You can't have it both ways. There's no reason to trust anything from this administration.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Frank is still around in early November 1985, as he questioned Kevin after Kevin found Marie's corpse. I think Maggie was gone by this point. I think she left as soon as Marland's material began to air. I wonder if Marland or someone at P&G had an issue with Mary Linda Rapleye, as Maggie was not only written out, but I don't even remember her being mentioned again, even though her entire family was still on the canvas and Marland's era was usually very good about history. I had no idea she even existed until I got the history book in 1996. It's a shame, because the character had some worth, and was a good contrast to Lyla and to Margo.- The Politics Thread
NYT is at it again, with much of the media ready and eager to try to find a new "gaffe" to tut-tut at. They will do or say anything to finalize a fascist takeover in this country. They lied their way into a war that killed millions. They did everything they could to help Trump in 2016. And here they are again. That paper is an enemy of democracy, and should be treated as one. It's time for any Democrat who has any desire to rebuild the country to start ignoring and isolating that tattered toilet paper, starting today. Tina Brown's old tabloid site isn't any better, just much more irrelevant.- The Black Lives Matter Thread
That video is so awful - a good reminder of what's actually going on, no matter how much social media and the powers that be try to distract with Bari Weiss or Candace Owens. I was watching this clip with Fannie Lou Hamer. Just as true today as in 1968.- The Media/Journalism Thread
I don't even know why they keep Weiss. I guess to try to avoid even more backlash from the very important center-right. They were trying to appeal to the hardcore right with that Cotton op-ed - they alienated everyone else and only managed to get meager praise and a lot of "toldja so" from those they wanted approval from. I'd say I hope they learned a lesson, but... I'm sure Weiss will have more to pout about the next time she goes on Bill Maher or Joe Rogan.- Racism and racial representation on soaps
When Paley was interviewed in '96 she praised Rauch for his bringing talented black people into AW (of course he would go on to write her out at GL, aside from some brief returns for the David/Vicky story, but the story with Gilly and Griffin was so terrible I'm not surprised everyone was written out). Someone at the show must have seen that Quinn had potential, as she lasted for 6 years. It's unfortunate she had to die so violently for such a gross storyline. An SOD after her murder had a negative fan letter, and a response from SOD that, in so many words, the producers had not realized she had any fans. That's just pretty [!@#$%^&*] pathetic.- Racism and racial representation on soaps
I agree in some cases, but not this one. The story and scenes I mentioned got criticism at the time from the soap press and a number of fans. 1999 wasn't as far away as it now seems, and ATWT had done a better job, admittedly in a dry and smaller way, with Duncan and Jessica's family on the subject of black characters rejecting and confronting a white system. They did manage to write Denise with some sympathy by the time of the Hope reveal and Lily fighting for custody, but by that point a lot of fans weren't willing to accept her or to forgive. I think they could have and should have handled Denise's early material differently, and if they had then the whole story might not have been such a bust.- Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
That is the only good scene Michael ever had on the show - aside from when he was plugged full of lead. Randall Edwards was very special as Delia. It's a shame RH never understood or appreciated this, instead pushing a series of failed new characters like MJ and poor, tired characters like Faith who tanked everything they touched.- The Media/Journalism Thread
The "not me, us" crowd was so full of proud racists, and enablers of racists, which is one of the reasons Bernie's campaign died such a death. Once the sneering and posturing about Biden and then delusionally trying to claim credit for the protests began to slip into hard reality, the cracks have shown more and more. Just disgusting people. I wish they'd just be fully open and go work for Trump's campaign. The endless posturing is unbearable.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
It was, yes. I'd forgotten Michael and Margaret were together for part of that period. A lot of ATWT couplings in those years... I've never been able to get past hearing Michael without the accent. I've sometimes wondered if that's why his other soap roles didn't work out.- The Black Lives Matter Thread
Before George Floyd's murder, I'd seen some debate on Twitter about how unrealistic Brooklyn 99 was, how progressive all the characters were even though a supermajority of cops are Trump supporters (this was partially tied to a debate of how unrealistic the Michael Schur workplace sitcoms have always been). At the time I had mixed feelings, because I thought - well, it's just a fantasy, people know it's not real life. After the last week, and other stories (I think this was already posted here) like the one about the L&O writer who was tweeting about wanting to kill looters, I realize the shows are a real concern and should be addressed. I think we will see a fade of some (probably not the Chicago PD/Fire/etc. series) and then they will return in a year or two under the umbrella of some kind of "good cop against the system" banner. Watching the John Lewis interview, I can't imagine how he's feeling and what he must be reliving.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
