GH: Classic Thread
@Dion Thanks for the extra details. I'm not sure why I tried to watch some of that week and not others at the time. Maybe I just wanted to see Robin Mattson again. @Khan That's how I'd describe Guza's second run as well. Emily is one of those characters who offered little to nothing of value herself but did serve as a positive presence for the Quartermaines, or could have anyway. That is the aspect which made her death hard to take after all their other losses. I never really bought her relationship with Nikolas - or any Nikolas relationship, to be honest. Georgie's murder will always be the most senseless and seemed based more on the actress not being the right "type" for the people at GH/ABC.

@janea4old Thanks. I got them mixed up. Appreciate the correction.

The Politics Thread
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2025/01/19/lady-mcbiden-alexandra-pelosi-first-lady-00199164 I'd say we shouldn't go along with media games and distractions, but Pelosi's daughter chose to say this on the record. I'd only ever heard of Alexandra Pelosi for making TV documentaries, and more recently, due to rumors that Nancy is trying to make sure Alexandra gets her seat in Congress. I can understand that she is deeply distressed right now, seeing her mother breaking a hip after her father was nearly beaten to death, but there was no need for her to be so crass, or to even say anything at all. The Bidens didn't do anything to her mother.

One of the problems now is many voters don't want solutions. They want suffering. They want other people to hurt and to die, and they think they won't be affected. If they are affected, then they will just blame immigrants, or black people, or trans people, or women - take your pick. That's why Trump is so effective. He spreads chaos and fear. So does the media ecosystem around him. If we have fair elections in 2026, there's a chance Democrats can regain some ground, and maybe win the White House in 2028 as the pattern tends to be Republicans burn everything and Democrats put it back together, but it's going to take a miraculous and visionary candidate to truly make change. And one who cares much less about norms or false assurances of how the public will see sense and believe in goodness, the downfall of Biden and most establishment Democrats. They are, yes. And sadly, many of them prefer Trump to Democrats because of these identity politic grievances.

Not liberals. Dead end leftists and more radical types. Many believe almost all gay men, especially white gay men, are rich, conservative, and bigoted. They will tell you that the only good gay men died of AIDS 40 years ago.

Twin Peaks
Thanks @Vee . SNL had a little card for David Lynch last night, which says more about Lorne wanting to be part of the zeitgeist than their views on the man (Lynch was never on SNL, but Bob Uecker, who hosted in season 10, was ignored). Still, SNL and Twin Peaks do have a lot of ties - from about 1990-2001 they had a near-constant connection due to hosts, musical guests and cast members.

The Village People don't even have a connection to gay culture or life in recent years so the attention on them feels like another smokescreen to me. I imagine those on the left who believe that all gay men are Republicans and are eagerly waiting for them to lose their rights will be enjoying all this.

I think Louise's character faked an injury to sue the hospital, or something. Courtney worked for her.

Great find @janea4old I wonder if Kyle ever talks about Santa Barbara or if Reed mentions the pilot in the primetime soap thread.

This was criticized a lot at the time. The daughter in question ended up being 10-15 years older than some of the possible choices. It would have made more sense if Rae's maternal backstory had just recreated this game:

Primetime Soaps

I love Linda Dano, but the whole arc was a very odd choice which showed how out of touch Angela Shapiro was with fans. Most ABC viewers had never heard of Rae and if they knew Linda Dano it was probably through QVC or seeing her in the Daytime Emmys. There are some characters who did go from soap to soap and charmed fans, like Myrtle (did they even mention Rae or Skye when Myrtle died???), but Rae was not one of them. I remember her AMC stint in particular getting a lot of viewer negativity.

From this it seems the main story she had was witnessing the Rachel/Kevin hostility and briefly hoping Eve was her daughter. Port Charles Recaps: The week of April 17, 2000 on PC | Soap Central Port Charles Recaps: The week of April 24, 2000 on PC | Soap Central

It's a good promo. I'm also reminded of how many times Liz has been in triangles that really weren't as something inevitably doesn't shake out (most recently Lucky and Ric being hung up on her but you know they aren't going for Liz/Ric again). I wonder if Frons or others thought Brannon wasn't conventionally attractive enough. Either that or they were worried he might have fans and might take attention away from their important characters, similar to what happened with Alcazar. It's a shame as Zander is one of those characters who could have become much more vital to the canvas later on thanks to Cam, and with so many 'stars' leaving or becoming burnt out.

Someone put up these very early Loving episodes in Italian. Not sure if they're already up elsewhere but posting anyway just in case they aren't. There's some nice location footage here.

It was RKK, yes. I really loathed the funeral scenes back in the day. Watching them now I can appreciate the performances and visceral anger more, given the dead zone you often get with soap deaths in recent decades. I am glad they were able to turn things around for her. As you said the writing has generally been superficial, but Kristina is so likeable and direct in her work, she makes you care. Without that directness and her chemistry with JJY I'd have a hard time with Mac/Felicia after the Fluke disaster.

Thanks @Vee for the confirmation about Heather/Edward. I have some vague memory of the lights being out at the mansion and her claiming to be possessed (by Lila...?), but maybe I'm reaching even further. Based on the coarse tone of Pratt's AMC run I'm happy to blame him for this period. The odd thing with Sandra Ferguson is she never even worked with JFP, IIRC, and she had a rough history (allegedly) with an FOJ, so she must have just been known to some casting person and was easy to hire. I remember wanting to give her a chance and tuning in to see her at a time when Kristina should have been there (I think when Maxie's heart was going out again or something). I'm not surprised she didn't last long. This "comedy" episode is all Frons, right? I think AMC had one around the same time.
