  1. The Rookie, Abbott Elementary, American Idol, Will Trent, ABC, Midseason, Drama, Comedy, 2024

    Just over six months after it was first announced that “9-1-1” would be moving from FOX to ABC after six seasons, the alphabet network has finally announced a premiere date for the highly anticipated seventh season of the highest-rated broadcast drama series in Adults 18-49. The network has also announced premiere dates for the bulk of its regularly scheduled programs following the end of the dual Hollywood strikes.

    Featuring a robust lineup of high-stakes dramas, fan-favorite comedies, unparalleled unscripted series and groundbreaking news hours, ABC will kick off its lineup of midseason premieres on Monday, January 2022, when Joey Graziadei begins his journey to find love on “The Bachelor,” which returns to the 8:00 p.m. slot for two hours. Falling under the ABC News “20/20” banner (title to be announced), an all-new eight-episode true crime series will follow the reality show at 10:00 p.m. on Monday nights.

    Comedy is back on ABC starting Wednesday, February 7 with an all-new season of “The Conners” at 8:00 p.m., followed by a second season of “Not Dead Yet.” At 9:00 p.m., ABC will air the special one-hour premiere of “Abbott Elementary.” At press time, ABC had not yet announced which show would occupy the 9:30 p.m. slot behind “Abbott Elementary.” At 10:00 p.m., “Judge Steve Harvey” closes the night for the network.

    A new season of “American Idol” is back with all three of the show’s judges returning along with host Ryan Seacrest, starting Sunday, February 18. A new season of the ABC News program “What Would You Do?” will air at 10:00 p.m. The iconic hidden camera show is being reintroduced to new and returning viewers who may have forgotten the concept.

    Starting Tuesday, February 20, ABC makes tweaks to Tuesday nights with “Will Trent” moving to 8:00 p.m. followed by “The Rookie” in its new time slot at 9:00 p.m. and “The Good Doctor” moving from Monday nights to Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m.

    Finally,” the long-awaited return of “9-1-1” moves to Thursdays beginning Thursday, March 14, after a long run on Monday nights while on FOX. The drama will air at 8:00 p.m., followed by the 20th season of “Grey’s Anatomy” at 9:00 p.m. and “Station 19” moving to 10:00 p.m.

    In anticipation of the show’s move to ABC, the network has released a nearly two-minute teaser trailer highlighting key rescues and how the “9-1-1” team works together to save lives during major disasters.

    Outside of the above announced programming, ABC expects to make additional scheduling announcements in the coming weeks. Additionally, the previously announced series pickup of comedy “High Potential” has been pushed to the 2024-2025 broadcast season.

  2. Brandon Barash, Eric Martsolf, Wally Kurth and Carson Boatman, The Day Players Band, Days of our Lives, DAYS, DOOL, #DAYS, #DOOL, #DaysofourLives

    After playing shows earlier this month in Huntsville, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee, the Day Players Band is heading to Florida, Illinois and Michigan for additional performances in 2024. 

    Comprising of four leading actors from the daytime drama series “Days of our Lives,” including Carson Boatman (Johnny DiMera), Brandon Barash (Stefan O. DiMera), Eric Martsolf (Brady Black) and Wally Kurth (Justin Kiriakis; Ned Quartermaine on “General Hospital”), the Day Players Band provides an unprecedented 90-minute acoustic concert, encompassing rich harmonies, engaging storytelling, and a guaranteed unforgettable night out.

    First up is a weekend in Florida with two performances scheduled, including a show on Saturday, February 24 at the Improv Comedy Theatre in Dania, Florida, starting at 2:00 p.m., followed by a performance on Sunday, February 25 at the Improv Comedy Theater & Restaurant in Orlando, Florida, also at 2:00 p.m.

    On Saturday, April 20, the band heads to the Comedy Vault in Batavia, Illinois, and on Sunday, April 21, they move on to the Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan. Both shows are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. 

    General Admission tickets to the Orlando event at the Improv Comedy Theater & Restaurant are available for $65, while VIP tickets are $140. 

    Tickets to the other three events keep in line with previous tour dates with prices starting at $55 for General Admission, $125 for VIP Experience (includes concert plus 20-minute Q&A, meet & greet, photo op), or $225 for a Super Pass (includes concert plus early access soundcheck, pre-show photos, post-show meet & greet, photo op and autographed band photo).

    So gruesome. I remember someone commenting on Deadline's story on this, saying that Hollywood needed a true crime story like this in the vein of the Nicole Brown Simpson murder so that people could take their minds off of the Hollywood strike. To think that way takes a special kind of person. Ditto for someone committing the crime. Just yuck.

    Upthread I mentioned this terrible murder in LA with a severed torso.  Since the incident, six neighbors have released their front door camera video showing the time of the incident. 

    DAYS is going to have to catch up with technology and explain why The Kiriakis and Dimera mansions don't have Ring cams (since we all know you can't lock your front door on a soap).  I was proud of them for using the "family tracking" app to locate Nicole.  But, wearing a black hoodie to steal a baby isn't going to cut it in modern storytelling. 

    Isn't that the one about the Hollywood producer's son who killed his wife and her family members? Or am I conflating some stories?

    Yes, I read online that the actor is still under contract so we can expect Dimitri's return to either turn the screws on Sloan, or perhaps his return will be the catalyst for the reveal about the switch.

     

    I guess so, given that I have watched for a solid year at this point and Leo's motivation regarding his family of origin has never been referenced.  It seems like with Sonny gone, John would be well suited to temper Leo's wacky schemes, but they barely interact.

    When it was announced that Peter Porte had been signed to a contract, I kept quiet on the matter because I was told that he WAS on contract but by the time that news story ran he had already been dropped to recurring. Just sayin'.

    ABC’s “The View” hit a new season high among Total Viewers, averaging 2.489 million viewers during the week of November 6-10, 2023. Not only was the daytime chat fest up week-to-week (+42,000 viewers), but the show was also up year-to-year (+110,000 viewers) and up over the same period two years ago (2021), gaining an impressive +143,000 viewers. Further, “The View” attracted its largest overall audience in nearly two years – since the week of March 28-April 1, 2022.

    Seven weeks into the 2023-2024 broadcast television season, “The View” is up over the same point last season, adding +57,000 viewers on average (2.361 million vs. 2.304 million). For the fourth season in a row, “The View” ranks first in Households and Total Viewers among all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs, topping second place “Live with Kelly and Mark” (2.314 million viewer average through the week of October 30-November 3, 2023) and third place “TODAY 3rd Hour” (1.949 million viewer average through the week of November 6-10, 2023).

    Outside of “The View,” only the first half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.278 million) managed to see week-to-week gains, adding just +6,000 viewers. Meanwhile, “The Talk” (1.351 million) was the only daytime broadcast series to see year-to-year increases, adding +11,000 viewers over its performance in 2022. As for improvements over 2020, “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.796 million) was the only daytime broadcast series to see an uptick, adding +69,000 viewers.

    Tied for first place in Women 18-49 (0.4 rating) and tied for second in Women 25-54 (0.5 rating), “The Young and the Restless” (3.175 million) hit a new season high in the unrounded* Women 25-54 demographic with a 0.54 rating. Only 0.03 ratings points separated the top-rated second half-hour of “The Price is Right” (4.288 million) and the daytime drama series in the unrounded* demo (0.57 rating vs. 0.54 rating). “General Hospital” (2.027 million) saw an uptick of +0.03 in the unrounded* Women 18-49 demographic compared to its performance one week earlier and a +0.02 increase in the unrounded* Women 25-54 demo.

    During the week of October 30-November 3, 2023, most daytime broadcast shows saw an uptick in virtually every category with few exceptions. The CBS lineup saw season highs across the board among Total Viewers, including a season high for “The Talk” (1.351 million).

    For the week, “The Price is Right” (3.812 million / 4.385 million) remained the most watched and highest-rated show, gaining an average of +137,000 viewers for both half hours compared to last week. “The View” (2.447 million) and “TODAY 3rd Hour” (2.074 million) were also up week-to-week, each gaining +140,000 viewers. “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” (1.536 million) was close behind with an uptick of +139,000 over the week ago period.

    Hitting a season high in Total Viewers, Women 18-49 and Women 25-54, “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.868 million) gained the most viewers week-to-week among the three daytime broadcast dramas, up +77,000 viewers. In fact, the half-hour series also saw gains during the comparable week in 2021 and 2020 (+29,000 viewers and + 186,000 viewers, respectively). 

    “The Young and the Restless” (3.185 million) was up +55,000 viewers and also hit a new season high among Total Viewers. The show beat its season previous high set during the fourth week of the season (week of October 16-20, 2023) by just +1,000 viewers (3.185 million vs. 3.184 million). Daytime’s most-watched drama series was up +59,000 viewers over its performance during the same week in 2020.

    “General Hospital” (2.059) was the only daytime broadcast series to see week-to-week decreases, losing -17,000 viewers. While the show remains down compared to the same weeks over the last three years, the overall declines are minimal compared to other daytime broadcast shows. The show was flat year-to-year among Households (1.4 rating).

    “TODAY 3rd Hour” (1.934 million) tied for first place in Women 18-49 rating (rounded) and tied for second in Women 25-54 rating (rounded) during the week of October 23-27, 2023, marking the first time in a while that the third hour of the popular “TODAY” franchise ranked as high among the daytime broadcast shows. The show was also up over its performance one week earlier in Total Viewers, gaining +68,000 viewers.

    Speaking of week-to-week increases, nearly every show was up among Total Viewers, including “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.791 million; +84,000), “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.459 million; +77,000), “General Hospital” (2.076 million; +62,000), the second half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.618 million; +54,000) and “NBC News Daily” (1.176 million; +55,000). Also up week-to-week was the first half-hour of “The Price is Right” (3.716 million; +30,000), “The View” (2.307 million; +20,000) and “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” (1.397 million; +15,000)

    “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital” were the only shows to see increases compared to their performance three years ago (2020), each up +68,000 and +14,000 viewers, respectively. As for year-to-year increases, only “NBC News Daily” saw an uptick, gaining +99,000 viewers compared to its performance one year earlier.

    “The Young and the Restless” (3.184 million) was the only daytime broadcast series to see improvement of +100,000 viewers or more during the week of October 16-20, 2023, and the series marked a season high just four weeks into the very young 2023-2024 television season.

    Although “The View” (2.287 million) was down week-to-week among Total Viewers, the talk show still managed to see improvement compared to the same week last year, adding +84,000 viewers.

    The first half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.271 million) saw week-to-week improvement, adding +80,000 viewers, and so did “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.707 million) which increased by +30,000 viewers over one week earlier. Also seeing improvement week-to-week among viewers was “General Hospital” (2.014 million) which gained +45,000 viewers and helped bring the show back over the two million viewer mark. The ABC soap was the only daytime broadcast series to see improvement over its performance during the comparable week in 2020.

  11. Tracker, Fire Country, The Equalizer, Ghosts, Elsbeth, CBS, 2024

    After a lengthy wait due to the dual Hollywood strikes, which officially ended last week after a deal was struck between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), pending ratification by the union’s membership, CBS on Monday announced the primetime premiere dates for its new and returning shows. 

    Kicking things off is “Tracker,” the all-new series starring and executive produced by Justin Hartley (“Passions,” “The Young and the Restless”), which premieres Sunday, February 11, following the network’s broadcast of Super Bowl LVIII.

    In the series, Hartley plays a lone-wolf survivalist named Colter Shaw who roams the country as a “reward seeker” who uses his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries while contending with his own fractured family. Robin Weigert, Abby McEnany, Eric Graise and Fiona Rene also star.

    On Monday, February 11, the popular comedy block consisting of “The Neighborhood” and “Bob Hearts Abishola” returns for season six and season five, respectively, starting at 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The epic 21st season of “NCIS” follows at 9:00 p.m., with the third season of “NCIS: Hawai’i” closing the night at 10:00 p.m.

    The three-hour block of “FBI” dramas returns on Tuesday, February 13 with the flagship series launching its sixth season at 8:00 p.m. followed by spinoffs “FBI: International” at 9:00 p.m. with its third season and “FBI: Most Wanted” at 10:00 p.m. with season five.

    On Thursday, February 15, “Young Sheldon” launches what will be its seventh and final season at 8:00 p.m., followed by the third season premiere of “Ghosts” at 8:30 p.m. “So Help Me Todd” returns for its second season at 9:00 p.m. Meanwhile, an encore of the series premiere of “Tracker” airs at 10:00 p.m.

    Heading into its seventh and final season, “S.W.A.T.” handles things for CBS on Friday nights beginning Friday, February 16. The second season of “Fire Country” follows at 9:00 p.m. and the 14th season of “Blue Bloods” closes out the night at 10:00 p.m. 

    Moving into its regular time period at 9:00 p.m. beginning Sunday, February 18, “Tracker” immediately follows the fourth season premiere of “The Equalizer,” which airs at 8:00 p.m. The night also sees the season three launch of “CSI: Vegas” in its new time period at 10:00 p.m.

    On Thursday, February 22, CBS will air an encore of the second episode of “Tracker” at 10:00 p.m. before formally launching “Elsbeth” on Thursday, February 29 in the time slot. The new drama is the second spinoff series taking place in “The Good Wife” universe and gives viewers more insight into the quirky lawyer that kept things interesting and humorous on the popular show.

    “Survivor” launches its 46th season on Wednesday, February 28 at 8:00 p.m. with a two-hour season premiere. Another two-hour episode will air on Wednesday, March 6, at 8:00 p.m. before the show begins airing 90-minute episodes on Wednesday, March 13, which leads into the 36th season premiere of “The Amazing Race.”

    Correct. Despite "Days of our Lives" having +500,000 or more viewers compared to "NBC News Daily" on any given week, the demo separation isn't as big as one would think. In fact, I'm currently preparing the last three weeks of ratings reports and will post the fourth as soon as I get the demos for last week, and there's minimal separation between the two in either demo.

  13. As of now, Mara, Janet and Devin are the only holdovers still posting all-new content to the website version of SOD. Carolyn Hinsey continues emailing her column, which doesn't appear to have a set release date yet. Last week, the column was published on Monday. The latest was posted today (Tuesday).

    Someone named Lee Meyer, presumably a freelance writer, is credited with a piece today, but it was also published to the site by Mara based on the link when hovering over his name on the byline. This is Lee's bio on Muck Rack, a website tracking content posted by journalists across the web: https://muckrack.com/lee-meyer/articles

    My understanding is Mara is now in charge of SOD following the departure of Stephanie.

    The word "legacy" in the context used is correct. Prior to one's death, Meta gives individuals the opportunity to allocate someone else to manage their social media accounts (Facebook/Instagram) in the event of their passing. This April person seemingly was that person designated by Tyler to do so.

    I do agree that no one should be actively posting on a dead person's profile, especially posting without clarifying that they are doing so via a note of some sort on the post letting people know it is them posting. Other than this one supposedly final post, we didn't formally know who was managing the page(s) based on the two prior posts which added more fuel to the fire surrounding Tyler's contentious relationship with members of his family.

    No. While "NBC News Daily" is doing better in the demos than when it launched last year, the show remains down compared to what "Days of our Lives" did in the slot just before being shipped off to Peacock and even compared to one year prior to the announced move.

    The eighth season of “The Bay” will see the final performance of the late Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie Spencer, “General Hospital”) in her role as a psychic medium and southern belle Sofia Madison, who taps into coma-stricken socialite and town matriarch Sara Garrett’s (Mary Beth Evans) mind to discover she’s being visited by the spirit of her deceased husband, Lee Nelson (Joe Lando) and haunted by the ghost of her late grandfather, the corrupt Senator Red Garrett (Bruce Davison), whose spirit is said to have cursed the town after his drowning in the bay 30 years earlier.

    Appearing in the Friday, November 10 episode of “The Talk,” which was pre-taped in observation of the Veteran’s Day holiday, “The Young and the Restless” star Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) appeared on the daytime talk show to discuss his recent experience as he battled bladder cancer, and discussed the scene that made him realize he wanted to stay on playing Genoa City’s most powerful businessman.

    While sitting down alongside the show’s co-hosts, Braeden shared sound advice for men after he recently won his battle against bladder cancer. When asked how he’s doing now, the Daytime Emmy Award-winner said, “I’m doing well, thank you. Long story short, I ended up at the urologist’s office after I couldn’t pee at all anymore. And that to those of you who are my age, [jokes] 49, I can tell you, it is very painful…I tell all of you guys, have a cystoscopy. Have it examined early on so that you catch it early. So go for it, fight it and [makes fighting fist].

    After commenting on his current storyline, in which Victor reveals he’d been faking his suffering from mental deficiencies to get the goods on his children, Adam (Mark Grossman) and Victoria (Amelia Heinle), Braeden reveals that there was a time he had wanted to play a different type of character because he was “tired of playing bad guys.”

    Braeden told co-host Amanda Kloots, “I asked [the late] Bill Bell who invented the show, brilliant man, I said Bill, I’m sick and tired of playing bad guys. I played bad guys on ‘Gun Smoke,’ right here on this lot as a matter of fact, on ‘Rat Patrol,’ ‘F.B.I.,’ ‘Hawaii Five-0.’ And I was empty, I couldn’t play bad guys anymore. I said it’s too dehumanizing. 

    “I said, can we imbue this character with a background that explains why he is as bad as he is…he wrote the storyline… Then when I did that scene with Dorothy McGuire, she played my mother who I had not seen in over 30 years. She had left me at an orphanage at the age of seven. She was destitute, no money. That rang a bell with a lot of people in the audience and with me. And once I did that scene, I said, ‘I’m going to stay.’ I had no idea how I was going to do it.”

    After Braeden’s confession, “The Talk” aired a brief but powerful clip from the episode featuring Victor meeting his mother, Cora Miller (McGuire), for the first time. In the clip, Victor tells her, “You are my mother… I’ve been waiting for you for years, and you never looked back!” 

     Braeden confesses he did the scene in one take after co-host Sheryl Underwood noted how real his tears looked to viewers.

    With the weekly print magazine discontinued and the final issue on newsstands now, Soap Opera Network has learned that Stephanie Sloane has exited Soap Opera Digest as VP, Editorial Director after 33 years.

    The owner of the iconic brand, a360media, made the decision in late October to shut down the magazine and shift more resources to digital. As a result, Sloane’s position was eliminated.

    Hitting newsstands in 2024, Soap Opera Digest will publish as a special edition magazine with at least four issues released annually.
