Between our current political climate and the problems that come with having so few LGBTQ+ characters on soaps, I feel like the genre is just retreating in general. To be honest I thought we'd already be there. The soaps have held up more than I had expected, but not in any way which does right by most of the non-white/heterosexual characters.
