Wicked, Universal Pictures

Less than a year since the film’s record-shattering theatrical release, NBCUniversal announced on Thursday that NBC has landed the broadcast premiere rights to “Wicked,” the global phenomenon starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, which earned $756 million at the worldwide box office and achieved the highest domestic gross of any film since its release on November 22, 2024.

“Wicked” premieres Wednesday, November 19 and will air from 8:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, just two days before the release of its highly anticipated sequel, “Wicked: For Good.”

In addition to its box office success, “Wicked” is also the highest-grossing Broadway film adaptation of all time and, earlier this year, secured 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and acting for both Erivo and Grande, among others.

The Jon M. Chu-directed film also stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, with Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Production Design and for Best Achievement in Costume Design.

Releasing exclusively in theaters on Friday, November 21, “Wicked: For Good” is the epic finale that concludes the untold story of the witches of Oz, Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande), who have since become estranged and are living with the consequences of their choices from the first film. When a girl from Kansas crashes into their lives, they will need to come together one final time and truly see each other if they are to change themselves — and all of Oz — for good.

Ahead of the broadcast premiere of “Wicked” on NBC, the network will also air the primetime special, “Wicked: One Wonderful Night,” on Thursday, November 6 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. The two-hour musical special, which will be available to stream next day on Peacock, stars Erivo and Grande and features electrifying performances by the two powerhouses alongside their “Wicked: For Good” co-stars — Yeoh, Goldblum, Slater, Yang and Bode — for an unforgettable night of reimagined musical arrangements, cast interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, exclusive surprises and even a sneak peek at what’s to come in the next chapter of Oz.
