Coverage of the House Select Committee’s public hearings on the January 6th Capitol Assault led to nearly every daytime broadcast series losing viewers week to week and year to year during the week of June 13-17, 2022. The only exception was “Days of our Lives” (1.723 million) which managed to grow in total audience over the prior week and the year ago.

“The Young and the Restless” (3.273 million) and “The Talk” (1.389 million) were the only other daytime broadcast shows to see an increase year to year, albeit the latter series could still use a substantial bump in viewership despite recently getting a pick up for a 13th season by CBS.

“The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.747 million) and “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.246 million / 2.568 million) saw substantial losses week to week with the former down -315,000 over its performance one week earlier while the latter was down -209,000 viewers for its first half-hour and down -294,000 viewers week to week for its second half-hour. Overall, “B&B” was down a mere -44,000 viewers over the same week last year while “Deal” was down -122,000 and -188,000, respectively.

“General Hospital” (2.147 million)  saw a small drop week to week and year to year in Total Viewers.

What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of June 13-17, 2022 in Women 18-49 rating, Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance in 2021 and 2020, respectively.

*Notable Preemptions/Schedule Changes

  • “The Bold and the Beautiful” was preempted on Thursday, June 16 due to CBS News coverage of the January 6th Committee hearings. A repeat aired in timezones not impacted by news coverage.
  • “Days of our Lives” was preempted on Thursday, June 16 and Friday, June 17 due to NBC Sports coverage of the U.S. Open Golf Tournament.
  • “General Hospital” was preempted on Thursday, June 16 due to ABC News coverage of the January 6th Committee hearings. A repeat aired in timezones not impacted by news coverage.
  • “The Talk” was preempted on Thursday, June 16 due to CBS News coverage of the January 6th Committee hearings. The all-new episode aired in timezones not impacted by news coverage and was later made available for viewing on the CBS App, CBS On Demand and Paramount+.
  • “The View” was not rated by Nielsen on Monday, June 13 due to a significant loss in overall coverage on ABC stations as a result of ABC News coverage of the January 6th Committee hearings. The show was retitled on Thursday, June 16 for the same reason. The show’s weekly average is based on three days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday).
  • “The Young and the Restless” aired a repeat on Monday, June 13 which was joined in progress following CBS News coverage of the January 6th Committee hearings.

Notes: Viewing levels were hitting multi-year highs in 2020 during the initial shutdown of the country due to COVID-19. “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless” began their months-long era of classic episodes which continued through late July 2020 and early August 2020, respectively. Comparable 2020 figures for “General Hospital” will return in August as the show aired reruns for most of the summer that year and was not rated (NR) by Nielsen.
